Wii Not Recognizing Boot.elf!?

Okay, I'm new to the homebrew scene, as far as hacking goes, but I thought if my wii version was 4.1U, which it is, I would be able to load the files onto the root of my SD card, which I have done so that the boot.elf is visible when I double click on the SD drive. However, when I go into the save data menu, Wii Channels, SD card, nothing happens! Do I wait a while, or something? Or should I be using a boot.dol, which I don't have.
