"the ugly condition of the hardware station" - cut him some slack, he's still a kid.  It's not like he has a clean room or a hot air rework station.

"some private info" - since when does anyone's private life matter at all in the hacking scene?

"Terrible from an engineering standpoint" - Microsoft really screwed up the XBox 360 with the industry transition to lead-free solder, which cost them a lot of money because of the RROD.  I'd say that's "terrible from an engineering standpoint".

At least the kid is trying.  The worst that happens - he discovers nothing, and there's no harm in him learning on his own.  The best that happens?  We get one or more steps closer to opening the Wii U.  Forgive me if I fail to see what problem you have with him.

At least something. Nobody else seems to care taking action currently anyways.
He may find a way to backup nand which becomes even more useful when there are risky exploits or similar.

Honestly, I've come to agree with marcan.  Living room PCs have made console hacking pretty much irrelevant.  There's so much effort involved in hacking consoles, and that effort could be much more effective if it targeted a platform that isn't fighting you tooth and nail.

I do miss the days of reading PPC ASM, though.  x86 ASM makes my eyes bleed.  But it's so much less stressful when you don't have crap from vendors like M:OM's missile CRC and reboot timers, or Smurfs and that one porno game with their code-handler-killers and deadloops.

he's bricked his wiiu. about what I expected

EDIT: he still claims to have a method to decrypt. this "kid" will be rich as the first person to break AES.
he's not a kid, he's 22

EDIT2: the private info I didn't mean about him personally. but messages he's sent that told his theories and methods. it's not pretty

For the most part, I've come to agree with Marcan as well.  There really aren't any homebrew applications that could be made for the Wii U that couldn't also be made on, say, an Android or iOS device.  That includes programs like emulators for past systems, and media players.  Plus, as he said, it is a constant cat and mouse game with the console manufacturer as they try and prevent unauthorized code from running on the system.  In addition, at this point in time, the vast majority of people would likely use any exploit mostly for piracy purposes (I feel pretty safe in saying that that's all the majority of GBAtemp users care about).

That being said, I still hope the Wii U eventually gets hacked, because I would like the possibility of using cheat codes on games.  Plus, using Wii homebrew as an example, programs like Devolution (GameCube USB loader that runs in Wii Mode) are pretty cool, because they allow you to do things that even official Nintendo software doesn't allow you to do, like playing the Phantasy Star games online through the Wii Wi-Fi connection.  Perhaps similar programs could be created that would run in Wii U mode.  I don't know if any Wii U homebrew scene would ever be as popular as the Wii homebrew scene though.

Looks like that thread got derailed...

Anyway, the thread below could be interesting as well.  They are working with the information that fail0verflow released on their blog awhile back, with regard to the three cores on a Wii U in Wii Mode.

I'd care mostly about cheat codes and a bit about piracy.

Since I still have the regular Wii, no need for GCN support or whatever for me personally.

Homebrew apps like media players? No, I have Wii homebrew and no need in general since other devices can do that, too.
Anyways, these homebrew apps usually are flawed way more than what comes with laptops or smartphones.
E. g. media player crashes randomly on playing movies *cough*.
