Curious... as Gecko OS usually says 'dumping wad/ios' or something when a new update pops up from a disk. Nothing happened with Kirby other than it being very hacker unfriendly...

I decided to talk to the guy in the ship, and the game froze there. I had to turn off hooks/disable debugger in order to make it run normally at that part.

*edit*

Looks like even the most updated of Wiis get the new 'update' from Kirby...

wow, the exact same happened to me!
After his speech I decided to talk to him again.
Deadloop freeze. ::)

The game is allergic against the code handler.
It´s a great advantage to have it that low in memory though, but still... :(

if you´re asking me, I use VBI.
Everything works fine (except for ASM hacking), it just crashed this one time as I talked to the guy.

I was using just the Default hooks, but I haven't really hacked/cheated during my play-through yet.

The game is... really easy.

Yeah, it probably was designed for little kids ;)
It´s funny how many hits one can take.
It´s almost possible to rush through the level, tackling any enemy in the way xD

The only 'trouble' I've ran into so far was fighting the Boss in World 6 only because he had so much health.

And the game practically lets you cheat by itself if you're not fast enough to for the 'dash and grab' puzzles... just connect a second (or third) wii-mote and place the other character next to the thing you want to grab, the cancel the other players to get your lives back.

Though I'm wondering why they bothered to put so much protection on something like this anyway... have we heard any news on what the 'update' on the game does yet?

If the game is too easy, then it sounds like some daredevil codes are in order.

---

Regarding "why protect this game", look at the progression we have seen.

We Dare - PAL only game.  Very small market.

Smurfs Dance Party - all regions.  Small market.

Driver: SF - all regions.  Medium sized market.

Kirby - all regions.  Larger market due to being a Nintendo franchise

---

To me, it looks like they first put MetaFortress on small games that no one cares about.  They slowly applied it to games with larger markets.  It was like rolling out a test to see if anything goes wrong.

If I were a betting man, I would place some bets that Skyward Sword will also employ this protection.  The new Zelda game will have a HUGE market, and it makes sense that they would want to ensure that this protection doesn't screw anything up.

Regarding the update, I have no clue about it.  Someone will have to take it apart to see what it does.  Has anyone notified TT about it?

Yeah, but daredevil codes are always ASM, aren´t they? ;D

you can add the Tin Tin game to the list of games that use MetaFortress just looked at it for fun since many pirates reported problems :P
They were nice enough to put an .ELF with all symbols on the disc and MFortressDefaultResponseVariant_1 is at 0x80008778

And btw the kirby protection is beaten!  O0

Lovely... I should ask my friend with his unhacked wii to see what sysmenu version he's sitting at now since he got Return to Dream Land the same time as me, but started playing before I did.

*edit*

Meep, I take it back about the game being easy... or at least the end-game part is ridiculous.

I played through the end boss fight right now and the difficulty definetely was medium - hard.
I died a few times, but that´s just for getting to know his moves ;)
Anyone who wants to fight by himself, try my newest (unlocker) codes ;D

I think at that point I was sleep deprived while fighting him.

It got easier the next day when I was more awake.

Storm101

So let me get this straight, the game works fine as long you turn off all the code/debugger stuff right? I'm worried about whether or not Skyward Sword will have similar problems. I just want to play it normally.

dcx2

I'm not a betting man, but I would bet that Skyward Sword will have this.

But you're right, if you don't use debugger/SD cheats/no hook then there are no modifications to the memory and it will work just fine.
