Hi there,

Heard there was an App for stopping firmware updates when booting a game that asks for one. The new Punch Out is coming out and I don't want to update my firmware just to play a legitimate copy that I'll be paying for :(

So what's the name of this App anyway?

Thanks

Yes, that exists... however it requires you to have 3.2U or E installed on your Wii.. downgrade instructions can be found at:

http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,1879.0.html

once you downgraded, you can use Starfall from http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Starfall
Starfall will allow your Wii to enable:
-region free by default
-blocking updates in Wii Menu
-however: in worst case update blocks will also stop games from running.. in that case you will need to extract the update partition of the game and install the IOS files manually using a WAD manager

As long as no piracy related stuff or IOS download is involved you can happily ask for support here.. there's nothign wrong with  installing IOS files you extracted from discs (for example with WUFE).

If the game just runs.. GREAT!

Thanks you mate, I'll give it a try tonight.

its not for 3.2J or 3.2K, only 3.2E and 3.2U.

also your much better off with preloader since starfalls pretty much dead and preloader can do whatever starfall does and a bit more.

do NOT pm me to request a code or if you have any problems with my code.

Thank you for the replies folks, but it seems that I found a better solution to my problems.

As you can guess by my name, I import games and like most Wii importers, I use the Gecko OS software. Now using it with an already installed Homebrew channel is no problem, but for me, since I only use Gecko OS, it's simpler just to have that software as it's own channel. Firmware 3.3+ and 3.4 both prevent the installation of WADs, so this removed the option of making a new channel with any future updates of Gecko OS.

My 2nd problem was the Rebooter that came with Gecko OS which allowed me to back up the save files that Nintendo is retardedly stopping us from doing for Online games like SSBB and MK Wii. What most people don't know is that flash memory doesn't have as long as a lifespan than hard drives do, so when the memory is dead, it's dead. The Rebooter allowed me to make backups of these save files on my SD card which afterward, I copied to my PC and then backup them up along with my other data on DVDs.

So how did I fixed this, well by following the steps of downgrading my firmware without actually doing it. Using Wad Manager 3 from the homebrew channel, I installed IOS16-64-v257-prod.wad followed by cios_fix.wad and finally, I ran the IOS Downgrader. Installing these 3 things alone (without downgrading my firmware) allowed me to install a Gecko OS channel and use the Rebooter once more.

I even took a risk by updating my firmware from 3.3+ to 3.4, killling my Rebooter features only to have them back after reinstalling those 3 files once more. So now I'm at 3.4, I can play my imports from the Gecko OS channel and I can use the Rebooter to backup my data as I please.

the reason it worked is because IOS Downgrader gives trucha bug back and fakesigning.

cios_fix gives you the ability for wadmanager to load off of a cios and allow installing.

downgrading would have saved you from future updates though.

you may still want to consider it.

I think I'll be safe for the first half of 2009 at lease. Nintendo released 3.5 in Korea because it's bootleg city over but no word as of yet regarding this firmware elsewhere. I'll see how long I can last without a firmware update. I honestly don't think that the Wii will have a 5 years lifespan anyway, Nintendo will probably release a Wii 2 or Wii HD by late 2010.

They've already released most of their big franshise titles in less than 3 years: http://pages.infinit.net/bps007/nintendo.html
Now they've started releasing GameCube games, not much left unannounced besides F-Zero, StarFox and Kirby for Wii.

That IOS16 trick is well-known actually.. Nintendo implemented a signature check in all new IOS files.. so WADs you try to install are being checked if they are valid.. no homebrew WAD is properly signed, they all rely on an old signature error Nintendo did.. IOS16 however is from Nintendo repair discs.. so it's an official WAD which was never meant to go public.. it has a valid signature thus WAD installers can install it (the system checks the WAD, recognizes valid signature and passes on). However: IOS16 is oooold.. meaning: once it's installed it has the signature hole again.. a WAD installer using IOS16 to install WADs can thus bypass the signature checks.. and a Gecko OS channel will work.

On a sidenote.. this is easy to patch for Nintendo.. all they need to do is make a new IOS - or just a copy of an old one like they did for IOS254 - and copy that to spot 16. I just wonder if that's what they strive for.. because if they do that.. Repair discs will run on retail Wiis.. and as that IOS16 bug is quite known I guess they are trying by force to avoid adding IOS16 to Wii systems although as of now, this and only that is the only publically known security hole which is left in the Wii.

And may I say: once you opened a hole.. you can profit from it.. which is exactly what's happening. It's a small hole.. but once you're through, you completely won!

There is another hole which is used by Team Twiizers to install the Homebrew Channel.. however they do not expose their holes anymore as they do not want the homebrew channel installer to be blocked that easily.. I expect them to explain the bug they used once their security hole has been fixed.

If it was well known, why didn't anyone tell me about it when I asked how to get the Rebooter back? All the answers I kept getting were to downgrade the firmware.

If you check out my post it will tell you that to perform a downgrade IOS16 is needed.
See: http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,1879.0.html

And yes, you'll need 3.3v1 or 3.2 to use Rebooter!

Well my firmware is at 3.4 (as I previously mentioned) and I am using the Rebooter.

In that case you have downgraded your IOS files - old IOS with new menu still means Rebooter working - Rebooter uses an IOS command.. this will by the way also allow you to play trucha signed games!
