Hey. Halp!
I just got my Wii modded and a USB Gecko to go with it, so I can backup my games, and play the backups if need be. I've found it's harder to get started than I thought.

Here's what I have / know:

Wii - has the Homebrew Channel on it
PC - downloaded the geckodvd program, imgburn, and the GOS 16d file.
DVD - the gecko OS, titled GEV 1B5, with four files on it (!!!.dum, boot.catalog, bootldr.dol, gbi.hdr)

I know I need drivers on my pc for it to work with the gecko... where's a direct link for them?

Now... can anyone provide me a set of full, clear, basic instructions (do this, do that, bang boom done) that will allow me to backup my discs?

I've looked through many threads of turorials and faqs, and whatnot, but I'm just confused. I just need someone to tell me the basics.

Thanks! (wishwishwish for a speedy, informative reply)

Thanks for the link for the drivers! I was already on those two other links. I don't know exactly what I should be doing / following.

Like... do I need that Gecko OS dvd in the Wii or the computer when I start a backup? Do I need something on an SD card in the Wii while I do a backup?

I just need a list of instructions to get me started... like, on that "extracting your dvd" guide... is that what I need to do a backup? I don't get step three... I think the disc I was given is the gecko dvd mentioned.
"Now insert your DVD you have just burned, go to the disc options and boot the game as you would any other Gamecube DVD. Once loaded you will get a screen like below"

Where? the Wii or the pc? When I put the disc in my pc, it just opens to view the four files. My head's just a jumble. :cry

I just want some clear instructions from where I'm at.

PS - where do I extract / put those windows drivers I just downloaded?

The Gecko OS dvd is that the GeckoOS 1.6d fixed ISO for your region.
Which you have burnt to a dvd.
If so it is for your wii.
No sd card needed you are going to backup you games in GameCube mode.
The geckodvd.exe is for the pc.The disc which comes with the usbgecko has got driver files on it not for the wii just for the pc the link i gave you is newer drivers for it.
extract the drivers in a safe place and plug in your usb cabal which is plugged in to your usbecko in to you're pc the pc will ask you for a driver point it to where you extracted them.:)

hehe memorris, beat me too it :)

The ISO you download and burn will be one of the following depending on what region your console is

PAL - http://www.usbgecko.com/files/gcosP16df.zip
USA - http://www.usbgecko.com/files/gcosU16df.zip
JAP - http://www.usbgecko.com/files/gcosJ16df.zip

extract the ISO and burn with imgburn using memorris guide.

This DVD you then load in your Wii, just like you would any other game. It will show as a Gamecube game as its a Gamecube format DVD.

The you download the Gecko DVD Tool here: www.usbgecko.com/files/geckodvd.exe

Run the tool and extract.

The windows drivers only need to be installed once, there is an install guide on this in the guide section also.

Thanks for the help, folks. My main problem was a small one that I figured out... everything I'd seend/remembered/misremembered said to have the Gecko in slot B, but it had to be in slot A first to get started.

I backed up a couple games to start, and it seems to be working mostly well... a couple glitches... I'll post them in the game compatibility thread.

Gday guys.  I am thinking of buying a wii, and I am sure I will when I understand fully the process of backing up any games I buy.

My questions are:
Once I have ripped a game to my pc via the usb/sd gecko, do I play the backup on the wii from the pc?
Or do i then burn the backup?  Do I need the 'fabled' LG burner to backup the usbgecko rip?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: My question is answered in the sticky for this section.  Don't be a newb like me and ignore the sticky!

Hello again, I am trying to backup my games.
I have a modded wii with d2pro and a usb gecko.
I have the 3.3 system firmware but got homebrew installed via the recent twilight re-hack.
I tried to run the GeckoOS 1.6d dvd in the Wii but it kept failing (i think because of the 3.3 firmware.
Instead I ran the GeckoOS 1.6d via the homebrew channel and then i fired up dvdgecko on my pc.
The geckoOS has a green gecko in the corner (on the Wii).
When I choose connect on dvdgecko it says it is connected at the bottom.
But when I choose single layer wii and press extract nothing happens for a while and then I receive this message, 'Error sending Extract DVD Command'.

This error appears regardless of whether I choose gamecube or dual layer dvd.

Can anyone help me?

Cheers

Your probably better off downloading wiirip and using that through the homebrew channel (after placing the files on your SD card) runs pretty quick.

Also when you back your games up experiment with burning speeds...I wasted 6 discs trying to burn at 2x and 4x speed....burned them at 8x and they worked great

Thanks for your reply Lord Lucifer.

I installed Wiirip and it has ripped a couple of disc - Yay! Thankyou for the suggestion.  (2 hours though -geez!)  I remember ripping games to my xbox harddrive and it took 8-10min.  I haven't burnt any to disc yet though.

For a few games though I am getting an error part way through.  It says something about resending a data packet or something like that.  It is almost like it is stuck on a disc scratch?  The discs aren't in a bad way though.
