Hey I just found a site that is not affiliated with geckocodes.org or here at wiird forums that had some of my codes posted. http://www.acgtop.net/bbs/archiver/tid-17549.html Anyone else know of this site? It is weird that I found another site with my codes posted from a site not affilated with wiird forums.
It's just people sharing the codes in Chinese. *shrugs* As long as they're not removing credit you should be glad to see your work spreading across the globe. :3
I just googled myself.....
http://www.google.ca/search?q=matt123337&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a (http://www.google.ca/search?q=matt123337&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)
Yes the runescape stuff is me.... did it so I could have some fun learning java :P
Very nice! =)
..wait did you mean to put that in this thread? lol
lol no, I was going to start a "Google Yourself" Thread, just I was really tired at the time :P
I'll remove that link from your post when I get home from work and contact the hackers who made those codes.
haha, it gets worse. There's another web site that has an old copy of all the codes. Here's RE4 codes...and there's a whole index listed at the top.
removed, email sent
They're doing their readers a disservice. They should just link straight to geckocodes. Then their readers have the latest codes.
gdi
Who actually takes the time to remove credit from codes? That's just bullsh*t.
Oh well. Anyone who actually uses codes likely isn't going to be using those crappy sites anyway.
It is irritating though. =|
It seems like the site Sharkbyte linked to is legit. I sent an email to them so hopefully we'll get a reply.
The codes were given to them by the one dcx2 linked to so they were (probably) not directly at fault.
I'll post here if they reply.
If they don't, I'll send another email until they do.
I have sent a much longer email to the other site that dcx2 linked to.
This would not be frustrating at all if they didn't blatantly remove credit. It would be /nice/ if they linked back to GeckoCodes but that's likely asking too much. ::) =|

No its not, they should give credit and link to GeckoCodes.
These kind of sites annoy the hell out of me, they practically live on our work.
They even make trainers (.gpf?) and make people pay for that.
So they are basically selling our codes.
Selling our codes?

Do we have *any* recourse? Anything more ethical than hiring a botnet to DDOS their site?
EDIT: If our codes are considered copyrighted material, can we issue a DMCA takedown notice to their ISP? Even if the codes aren't copyrighted, we can still try to issue the takedown. Most ISPs shoot first and ask questions later.

That was exactly what i was thinking :P
They're not really selling them, you just need to buy a premium account of some kind to view them.
At least that's what i found out after a quick look.
I meant it would be nice if they did that in addition to leaving the credit on.
Yeah, it's bullshit.
Seeing this content theft with no credit, in this large of a number, is making me re-think adding a simple online form for quick mass-code-add to one's copy of Accio Hacks. I mean just a public version- for hackers it's definitely coming via admin.
Maybe the only "public" available mass-code-add for Accio Hacks will be via an offline USB Gecko transfer... In that case it would be very unlikely for one to add stolen crap.
@dcx2 This shit has happened since codes started. Codejunkies sold my codes on an individual, special edition Twilight Princess ActionReplay. =| It's sickening. My main priority in creating the database was making the codes clearly credited so people who copy-paste would be far less likely to post uncredited codes.. Clearly it doesn't always work.
I could email them and quote copyright and DMCA laws requesting they pull it down but if they know anything about code history, they may know that these codes *might* not be able to be copyrighted.
ASM codes though for sure I can send a copyright infringement notice to them. (or maybe the hacker would have to)
True true.
This is a link href spammer.

If they were selling them I do believe that a creative commons license covers bits of code.
Yeah, I'll be slapping one on geckocodes tonight. No idea what that means for the stuff that's already on the site though.

What do you mean?
That license has been there for years, right? ;)
The assumption of copyright is implicit. You cannot just assume that no (c) means that it's fair game to copy. ;D
Oh no, the copyright has been there since before day one. I meant I'll be putting up a CC license in addition. Maybe a "terms of use" page or something. I dunno.
Any input would be very helpful.
@Romaap: lol
Do something like "this material is copyrighted under the xxx copyright, any violation will be prosecuted".
Cheat Happens has modified their site code to place a link at the bottom of every "Gecko Codes" page to link back to GeckoCodes.org.
Though they didn't say it, I suspect in the future they will also leave the hacker names intact.
Sounds okay to me, especially since they were considerate enough to make the change so quickly; but how do you all feel?
http://www.cheathappens.com/show_cheat.asp?ID=28023
It's better than before, but still not ideal. I guess it's acceptable. Especially since it was a pretty quick turnaround.
Agreed entirely.
I did stress the importance to us about the hacker's names again in the reply. /Hopefully/ they'll not remove them in the future.. =|
I do agree too, its better but still not perfect.
I can live with this though.
sorry to jump in like the random outsider...
but i definitely do have to agree this is bullshit if someone is taking your hard earned codes and claiming them as their own :\ even more so when they attempt to add a "premium" view to get the "better" codes that are still all free over here.
honestly.. thats kinda one of the reasons why i wont be making my codes public ever... one i dont want people to come in mass and demolish what little is left of my game, and 2 i dont want people taking credit for anymore of my codes. i made them, i worked for them. the are MINE not yours. too bad.
and also a slight suggestion: i know it wouldnt stop much.. but some people are far too lazy to bother making an account on a forum. i forget if i had to check my email and click on a link or not to activate my account.. but im just thinking.. what if you changed the database to needing a Wiird account in order to access it? it would still be up to everyone if they wanted the codes to be free or not (by limiting accounts) but at the same time.. it would also remove some of the "noobs" from stealing everyones credit and hard work.
