EDIT: If our codes are considered copyrighted material, can we issue a DMCA takedown notice to their ISP?  Even if the codes aren't copyrighted, we can still try to issue the takedown.  Most ISPs shoot first and ask questions later.
That was exactly what i was thinking :P

They're not really selling them, you just need to buy a premium account of some kind to view them.
At least that's what i found out after a quick look.

If they were selling them I do believe that a creative commons license covers bits of code.

Check out my site with codes obviously...

Yeah, I'll be slapping one on geckocodes tonight. No idea what that means for the stuff that's already on the site though.

What do you mean?
That license has been there for years, right? ;)

dcx2

The assumption of copyright is implicit.  You cannot just assume that no (c) means that it's fair game to copy.   ;D

James0x57

Oh no, the copyright has been there since before day one. I meant I'll be putting up a CC license in addition. Maybe a "terms of use" page or something. I dunno.
Any input would be very helpful.

@Romaap: lol

Romaap

Do something like "this material is copyrighted under the xxx copyright, any violation will be prosecuted".

James0x57

Cheat Happens has modified their site code to place a link at the bottom of every "Gecko Codes" page to link back to GeckoCodes.org.
Though they didn't say it, I suspect in the future they will also leave the hacker names intact.

Sounds okay to me, especially since they were considerate enough to make the change so quickly; but how do you all feel?

It's better than before, but still not ideal.  I guess it's acceptable.  Especially since it was a pretty quick turnaround.

James0x57

Agreed entirely.

I did stress the importance to us about the hacker's names again in the reply. /Hopefully/ they'll not remove them in the future.. =|

Romaap

I do agree too, its better but still not perfect.
I can live with this though.

IRS

sorry to jump in like the random outsider...

but i definitely do have to agree this is bullshit if someone is taking your hard earned codes and claiming them as their own :\ even more so when they attempt to add a "premium" view to get the "better" codes that are still all free over here.

honestly.. thats kinda one of the reasons why i wont be making my codes public ever... one i dont want people to come in mass and demolish what little is left of my game, and 2 i dont want people taking credit for anymore of my codes. i made them, i worked for them. the are MINE not yours. too bad.

and also a slight suggestion: i know it wouldnt stop much.. but some people are far too lazy to bother making an account on a forum. i forget if i had to check my email and click on a link or not to activate my account.. but im just thinking.. what if you changed the database to needing a Wiird account in order to access it? it would still be up to everyone if they wanted the codes to be free or not (by limiting accounts) but at the same time.. it would also remove some of the "noobs" from stealing everyones credit and hard work.
