Punch Out with Gecko 1.9.3

I have no mod chip and am using strictly soft mods.  Every other game I have tried by loading through Gecko has worked.  I am using a Japanese Wii and the Punch Out I bought is from the US.  Every time I try to load it a black screen appears and my controller rendered useless.  Is there any way to make it play?

I guess I should add that my Wii is operating under the 4.1j update...
