If you're seeing this message - you are on the new server!

Hi to everyone,

you might have noticed.. while downtimes have become less often due to the fact I changed the server, it sometimes just cannot handle your request (error 500 coming).. simple reason for that: error 500 appears when the server ressources are busy and it cannot assign you a slot. One a friendly note, the server just is not able to handle too many users at the same time unfortunately. A hardware upgrade is not affordable, typical free hosts or something like that are quite critical to use for forums like this as here and then they might start with "Oh we're not hosting illegal webpages" while server providers such as my provider are like "Everything you host is completely your own risk, the domains are yours, you are administrative contact so if you host child porns we're not responsible for anything, we're just providing space!"

Anyway, the nice folks at http://gamehacking.org/ will provide space for us in the future - they also host multiple popular webpages such as http://kodewerx.org/. As the forum does not allow attachments and stuff like that the webpages are not large at all obviously our space requirement isn't worth mentioning anyway all needed is a server being capable of providing performance for the users of that forum and Geckocodes.org .

The move will happen over the week I guess.. the transition should be as seemless as possible, you will probably find the forum (or http://www.geckocodes.org) magically being in disabled mode - meaning they'll be switched to read-only. We'll then switch the DNS servers to link to the new page so if you notice the forum is not in disabled state anymore.. well, go ahead and go on posting. On the forums I will put a news entry in the top area showing that you're on the old server and if the DNS switch is done - if it says a regular message you know you're on the new. Depending on your provider DNS switches can take up to 48 hours, if you use public DNS services such as Google Public DNS, OpenDNS or  another - those are usually much faster (in best case they update their records in less than 30 minutes).

Notice though that the moves will probably be seperate: while I will move the forums, James0x57 will move the Code Database himself.

you guys will still have access to the root though, correct? SMF likes to randomly fuck up for no reason and it'd be a shame if you weren't able to fix it anymore Sad

That's how I tried to pull it off.. as I had SSH access on both servers I could pretty much move over the data including the database.. the move took like 30 minutes.. it's just I guess many people still need to wait for their ISP to update the DNS records.

To be honest.. the less differences the better.. in my case, I do not even have that difference simply because I have 24 hour times set in the forums. But yeah, one and a half days is not really a good time for a ISP - good thing I wrote up to 48 hours, I originally planned to write 24 hours. I do not use my ISP DNS, I have set up the Google ones and it took them about 3 hours to do the switch.
