hello everyone. I want to scan for my name in a game (in this case, Black Ops) but i dont know how to scan for strings and change what they say. I learned of something where you go into the memory viewer, change it to ascii, and search for it but when i find it i dont know how to change it. Can someone help me?

you have to write your name in ASCII.

a = 61
b = 62
c = 63
d = 64
e = 65
f = 66
g = 67
h = 68
i = 69
j = 6A
K = 6B
l = 6c
m = 6D
n = 6E
o = 6F
p = 70
q = 71
r = 72
s = 73
t = 74
u = 75
v = 76
w = 77
x = 78
y = 79
z = 7A

0 = 30
1 = 31
2 = 32
3 = 33
4 = 34
5 = 35
6 = 36
7 = 37
8 = 38
9 = 39

that should change it to: dark but it doesnt. why does this happen?

Strings should be null terminated.  That means that the very last byte needs to be a 0.  This tells the CPU that it has reached the end of the string.

A better way to test would be to poke a single letter change and see if your name is changed.  You may have found your name, but there may be multiple copies of your name in memory.

Use the Memory Viewer Search (Gecko.NET's is better than WiiRDGUI's).  Don't use the standard Search on the first tab; strings have byte alignment and therefore are likely to be missed by this search method.

Spoiler for Hiden:
CoD Black Ops PAL-ENG

Codes found by [email protected]

[1st Profile Name Changer]
06B02684 000000YY
XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

[Second Profile Name Changer]
  06B026A4 000000YY
XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

[Third Profile Name Changer]
  06B026C4 000000YY
XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

[Fourth Profile Name Changer]
  06B026E4 000000YY
XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX

You used the 05 prefix?
Fail, this game stores the profile name in the 80xxxxxx area... Huh?
Everything was said, use the memory viewer search and scan for your name in ASCII letters, like this:
