Can Gecko OS harm the Wii lens?

Earlier this year some friends and I decided to install HBC in order to use cheats for Brawl, with Gecko OS. One or two months ago one of my friend's Wii stopped reading discs, the same happened with mine about two weeks ago and yesterday the same happened with another friend's Wii. We tried cleaning the lens, but it's not working, we'll have to get our Wii consoles repaired. Do you think it has anything to do with Gecko OS? I find it weird that we all started using it at the same time, and almost at the same time too we have this problem. Gecko OS makes a loud clicking sound whenever it starts reading the disc, so I believe it somehow affects the lens. What do you guys think about it?

Thanks in advance.

No that's ridiculous software cannot physically affect hardware
If there's any code at all that you want to be button activated, or even able to toggle on & off, and I have the game, just PM me and I'll make it happen

Yup, I know it... it's just that it all happened at the same time, and that loud clicking thing make me think about it...

isn´t this normal for running wii disks? :p

this has happened to me 2 times with my Wii before, the reason it happens may be because the Wii's lens is dirty , and get problems reading dual-layer games like Brawl and Metroid: other M (this was my case atleast). So what I did, was to uninstall all mods on the Wii (in my case, it was only Bootmii as boot2 and Homebrew channel), then I sent my wii in for repair.

But first: try if it works with some other games :)

One of my co-workers had his son's Wii laser die on him.  He never used any homebrew.

My girlfriend's Wii is having some troubles playing some GameCube games.  It will randomly error and ask her to reset the Wii.  I think it's because her laser is dying, too.

And everyone knows someone who was on the third or fourth PS2...

Unfortunately the Wii - while in comparison for example to the Xbox 360 which often completely dies - has a problem with its own laser. You may remember when Super Smash Bros Brawl was released that there were several Wiis world-wide who were unable to play the game. Those Wiis needed to be sent to Nintendo and well: it's not really certain what Nintendo did - maybe they replaced the laser/lens unit (modding stores even sell those), maybe they also just tuned the resistor of the laser - lower resistance = better reading of discs - however, the lower it is the more the laser can actually harm the discs - and before you ask "What a laser can harm the disc?" - yes, it can basically a CD/DVD burner does nothing else, it modifies the content of the disc with a laser. For many people with modchips: when Brawl was released they had to open their Wiis and put it completely apart as that resistor is very hard to reach.

i have had my laser replaced twice. both were covered under warranty and with only a few days to spare too (3 more days on the last one and i'd be screwed) My warranty is well expired now though, and my laser is having issues with GCN games again. I use UNEEK for everything now so that I can hopefully avoid further wear on my laser. This way I can just dump it to the harddrive once and I don't have to waste the laser

That is bizarre, I never had a problem with my wii, especially not the lense... And I tore the front of it off too. ( I didn't know what I was doing, I was just like, 'ooooo technology'

and I got my Wii a loooong time ago.
Maybe NTSC-U Wii's are just made better?

It has nothing to do with that. Some Wiis never showed problems, I did however have friends contacting me because their Wii could not read SSBB (that was a popular example back then). However, all in all, I'd say less than 10% of people I know having Wiis had those die on them - and if it died, then it was the lens.

(note: by dying I do not mean bricking - bricking is the user fault in 99% of all cases, the only known to me brick which is not a user fault is a faulty 4.2 update. This would count, however no person in my near had that problem - and yes, I also ran the boot2v4 upgrade on my Wii with DopMii - a faulty overwrite of boot2 is very rare - why did I do it? Well, I wanted to have the option, in case I really need to upgrade to a new system menu - I am on 4.1 - I would not need to fear about my Wii removing BootMii or such).

I have it too... It feels good to have a 'sandbox' Wii
