Can't get codes to work on Twilight Princess [RZDE01]

When I load up the game through Gecko 1.9.3, it says it applies the cheats, but the game plays as if no cheats were applied at all. When I load up the game through Ocarina, the wii just freezes up in a black screen.
I only ever use 1 code at a time when doing this, and I have tried to activate multiple codes, with no success.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Are you using codes for the correct version?

There are two forms of the US version

if you look at the tiny text on the bottom of the game DVD, you should see

RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA (this is version 1)

or

RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA (this is version 2)

also, be sure gecko os is on default hook

the version 2 codes are located farther down the list
