Update this, update that...

I've found about all the necessary info I need to install Homebrew and use Gecko OS on my Wii. However, my Wii is currently bothering me about updating my system, whether it be to play Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, or to use the shop, or whatever. I know that if you update to Version 4.3, it's all over as far as Homebrew is concerned. Do I have to choose between using the latest Wii games/shop and using Homebrew, or is there some sort of workaround.

I don't know. I'd need something like that to be able to use new Wii software without updating to 4.3. Right now, my goals are:

1. Play Sin and Punishment 2: Star Sucessor without updating to 4.3
2. Use Shop Channel without updating to 4.3
3. Do it all without (hopefully) wrecking my Wii

Otherwise, I'm going to have to think up a whole new ballgame.

(unless you're saying that a channel updater is already integrated with the Homebrew channel...?)

If you load a game in Gecko OS and it requires a new IOS to be installed, Gecko OS will safely go out and get only the new IOS, without updating the System Menu.  So you should be able to play any game.  Just NEVER use the Disc Channel in the System Menu to load a game.  Ever.

There should also be some apps called DOP-Mii or WiiSCU that can update the shop channel without updating the System Menu.

Well, I finally managed to get Homebrew installed on my Wii. I must say, it has a pretty cool interface; it looks just like an official Wii channel, with a musical jingle and everything. Yep, I got the "Mario Transformation" code to work, and it's pretty nifty. Still, I can't believe I went through all this effort just to get Mario to use Fire Power without a time limit like in the first SMB game...

Thanks for you help. If you don't mind, what do you think is the best program for updating the Wii Shop Channel: DOP-Mii or WiiSCU? Both have a "if this bricks your system, I'm not responsible" disclaimer on it, which makes me a little nervous. I'm leaning towards WiiSCU, since it seems simpler, and I hear the major problems with bricking concern that the 4.0/4.1, and I have 4.2. However, I'm not sure if I'll need to update something in the future for which I'll need DOP-Mii for some reason.

I've never used either app, personally, because I never use the Shop Channel.  If I wanted to play a SNES or N64 game, I would pull out the SNES or N64 and play it.  ^_^

Someone else might have a better opinion on what to use.  I think DOP-Mii can be used to patch an IOS to re-apply the signing bug and ES_Identify.  So it's more powerful than WiiSCU, which basically just does the update minus the System Menu update and patches.

Don't be too scared of the "this can brick your Wii" - *any* homebrew app that writes to the file system comes with this disclaimer.  Though, if you have a battery-backup like a UPS, I would definitely plug the Wii into that, because the power going out at the wrong time can be tragic (so don't update during a thunderstorm, etc).

Have you installed BootMii yet?  If you have BootMii then there is a literally 0% chance of bricking your Wii, short of throwing it out a window into traffic.

can't install boot2 for me. either way i'm safe.

i had to install a new IOS in order to play Super Mario Galaxy2.
