not sure what i did wrong, cant access gecko or ocarina

first off hello, im new. ;)

(little background, just got a wii, so i am running 4.2u, i have the hbc it is at 1.0.6. gecko is at 1.9.3.1)

anytime i try to load gecko it tells me it is not a valid wii app. i know the answer to this, its because of the .elf file instead of a .dol file.  but i dont have a .elf file, i used the elf to do l converter and made sure that it was actually a .dol file. so i am not sure what to do there.

also, when i try to run ocarina 1.0 it tells me there is no usb storage device and gives me 2 options: cIOS249 or cIOS222. i have tried both ports while selecting either option, and even removed for kicks and giggles and tried both. nothing happens.

what did i do wrong?
