Some people using Mario Kart Wii got this new error code.. checking on Nintendo.com :

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/errors/results.jsp?error_code=20102&system=Wii&locale=en_US&action2.x=0&action2.y=0

So well.. Nintendo started fighting back.. good thing they do!  Evil
Some supposed to be Nintendo employee posted on mariokartwii.com :

As kinda expected - fake

Please note.. this post could very well be fake! It looks real because of all the nice dates added to it but beware these dates could be completely random! All I can say.. the information seems to be valid so far.

I know someone who is banned and he used codes online, I am not and i used codes in private online matches AND ALL OTHERS KNEW I WOULD - which kinda matches the text.

One minus would be: he claims that IPs were banned.. just to tell my opinion.. IP bans are 100% inefficient.. while in some countries fixed IPs are regular, in most European for example each online user has a dynamic IP.. meaning.. once he logs out and logs back in into Internet he has a new one.

Still no confirmation known, handle the information like a raw egg!

Yeah I just read about this yesterday, I was surprised that Nintendo was actually taking action after what... several months? (Since August at least). They sure were slow but, I guess it's finally happening, which is good. Long as they don't ban people using codes in friend matches I'm cool.

Does anyone know if this will ban your entire wii or if it only bans you for that game.

How would they know if you are doing it? I'm sure they have to catch you doing it in the game, it's not like they can change the programming on games that are already out.
Or they might just have the servers now check :|

I doubt they'd ban it by IP. It'd be more painful for someone to get their Wii's code banned since they'd have to format it and get a new wii number. This would erase homebrew and shop points which MAY in the future leave them stuck without homebrew.

Nintendo can't pick up the VP and BP codes as they are stored offline.

There are claims and speculation on other forums that they are banning MAC addresses of Wiis.   Is there any merit to a happening like that?  Would it be possible for them to block people via MAC addresses in any way?   There are also unsubstantiated claims that they are somehow detecting the Homebrew Channel ticket on the Wiis.     I cannot even guess whether or not they can actually do that.

Blocking MAC addresses work! However, again just temporarily.. you can theoretically change your MAC address by reflashing/exchanging your Wi-Fi device or well.. buy LAN adapters.. each LAN adapter will end up having a new MAC address.. though even third party devices about 10$/€ won't make this really worth it.. these would be expensive bans!
