Cheat Manager (On the Wii); Gecko OS & Codes?

How do you activate codes? i'm a bit confused.
i have a code i would like to use on Mario Kart Wii,
it's an items cheat. i already input the item for the x values, and the y value.
i already activated the write char offset cheat,
but when i activate them, (hit the + button), and i exit, and open the game thru gecko OS, no cheats are activated
am i doing it right?
i also converted the two codes into gct files... is that how you activate them?
any help is appreciated
(yes, i am a noob at this. :D)

You must store your GCT files in a folder named codes in the root of your SD card. :P
