Some Graphic Hacks are Easier then Others/Object Switching

My favorite thing to hack is graphics. I've made a few codes and released one or two for graphics but one has really puzzled me and I've been trying for a while to get it work. I'm talking about object switching. I know it's possible I've seen codes for it. So I've been looking at some dumps of Super Mario Galaxy looking for the address of coach penguin in beach bowl galaxy. I thought I found it when something looked promising but when I looked for another object to see similarity I found none. So my question is that other graphic hacks I made were just this object appears above my head when something happens so keep the above head value locked, or now I'm this for a bit lock the value when I'm that. This one coach penguin never goes away how would I find his address. Is looking in the dump the right way to go?
