Homebrew itself is fine, the problem is you might have loaded your Wii up with some cIOS crap.  If you screwed with the IOS that NSMB uses, it will probably fail to load.

You need to be more specific.  What do you mean "wont work"?  Black screen, exception error when loading in Gecko OS, or what?

What total modifications have you made to your Wii?  Installed any cIOS?  Patched any IOS?

You should get a list of all the IOS that are installed, what version they are, if they're patched, etc.  Also what firmware version.

Seeming to load fine and then failing later is usually an indication of a dying DVD drive.  As far as the hard drive thing, I've got no clue how to help you there.  Probably wrong cIOS thing or something like that.

Installing cIOS is one of the best things one could do to his Wii.
It patches the ios249 and ONLY adds improvements and doesn´t touch any other functions *AT ALL*.
I use cIOS for 3 years now and there never were any problems with "non-homebrew" actions like reading dvd disks. :o
Homebrew does *not* mess up hardware. Does your Wii dvd drive sputter louder than before? It must be a dying dvd drive or a dirty laser.
Did you try cleaning it or using an USB Loader? It doesn´t use the dvd drive, the laser, nor does it make any noise.
I know that this forum is against cIOS, but being able to play the game is better than not. He bought the game. ;)
(To get USB working, search for help elsewhere, if needed.)
