My Rebooter Won't Work

I tried to use Gecko OS a few days ago to activate the rebooter, but it wouldn't fly. I checked and saw that the wii had been updated to 4.0 without my knowledge. So I used to CIOS downgrader to switch it to an earlier version (3.3, what it was before). My Wii has been downgraded before and worked with no issue.

Then I found out about Gecko OS 1.8, so I downloaded that. Still, I get the "error loading menu" screen, regardless of which version of Wii I use. I tried dumping out all the files on SD card except for Gecko OS. And still, I get the same Error Loading Menu screen.

So my situation is, regardless of what else is on the SD Card, which version of Gecko OS I'm using, which version of Wii I am using, Gecko OS seems to be incapable of using the rebooter.

At this point I'm at a complete loss. I can't think of anything else I could do to get the rebooter to work. Does anyone know what could possibly be causing its chronic failure in this situation?

First, turn off the Wii Connect 24.  This will stop the auto updates.  You will instead get a message about it.

Second, which version of the Home Brew Channel are you using?  HBC 0.8 uses Elf files and HBC 1.1 uses Dol files.  The package that Gecko 1.8.0.2 is set up with the Elf file.  If you wish to use the Dol file, you'll have to go into the Dol folder, change the Dol file's name from "main" to "boot" and use that in the package instead of the elf file.

Other than that, I have no suggestions.  I've never had a problem with the rebooter from the old Gecko OS on either 3.2U or on a 3.3U Wii.  I haven't tried the new version of Gecko yet with the rebooter.

You have to patch IOS 36 with the trucha bug in order to allow rebooter functions on 3.3v2, 3.4, and 4.0

You can downgrade the IOS by finding one or using an IOS patcher, I know there is an IOS downgrader out there.

I would like some more complex explanation, if at all possible, so I can understand what's going on better.

First, is the IOS downgrader different from the CIOS downgrader that I've been using recently? Is this the reason why the rebooter won't work no matter what I downgrade the Wii to- because I haven't been downgrading the right parts?

Second, what exactly is the trucha bug and where can I find it? Are these two issues completely separate? That is, if I get the trucha bug, do I still need to downgrade the IOS, or is it necessary for me to do both if I want my rebooter functionality?

ok here goes.

The Trucha bug is a name for the bug in all the old IOS versions that was found that would allow the running of fakesigned code on the wii. The cIOS downgrader changes a cIOS to an earlier version, no real benefits in my opinion since every cIOS is better than the last.

The IOS downgrader will downgrade various IOS versions to an earlier state.
Nintendo is out to prevent piracy, so they released system menu 3.3 which eliminated the trucha bug in every IOS version PUBLICLY released.

When blocking the trucha bug it prevented installing wads and other things, but the rebooter function also uses the trucha bug to initialize the loading of the wii system menu.

Since Gecko OS uses IOS 36 as the default IOS to load everything with (even system menu) you have to downgrade your IOS and enable the trucha bug in order to even start loading the system menu.

Personally, I think that the trucha bug is good for things like rebooter but is pretty much bad for everything else.

3.2 will have Trucha bug enabled, although you don't need to go to such extreme measures.

You can install cIOSCORP which will give EVERY IOS the trucha bug (which i recommend even though it's risky) or you could find a IOS patcher (don't know one that does specific IOS's) or you could find a precompiled one.

That is not completely true. It is also compatible with .elf files.
However, with newer ones. The old ones won't work. However, 1.8.0.2. seems to already use the new .elf file "format" because it still works in my HBC 1.0.1.

One question: Is the rebooter in v1.8 supposed to work with newer Firmware Versions too? Or does it still only work in v3.2 or actually those where the Trucha signing bug is still there?

Try the Elf file (then one that's with the updated Gecko OS) for yourself and see what message you get when you run your HBC.  It don't work!  :P

Then you're pretty alone.. it works here.. and yes I have 1.0.1 - and I guess all others also have the newest!
