ROM question/ Does the Region matter?

Is there any risk of running a European/japanese ROM on your American Wii??
I read somewhere that you should avoid different regions to avoid bricking your wii, however im uncertain as to whether or not this was referring to ROMS or actual wii software

if you use Gecko OS and the game just boots then there is no known risk up to now.. the risk everyone is talking about has to do with modchips.. modchips will try to install updates on your Wii (you know when you insert a disc and it says "Update will be installed" and so on)!
