Title: Video Tutorial: Intro to Wii Ram hacking
Post by: Foxx on August 15, 2008, 10:29:49 PM
I was talking to James0x57 and decided to clip out my segment from BSoD Episode 24 and make a downloadable and streaming version of my Intro to Wii RAM Hacking Segment.

This is a begginers guide to the basics on Wii RAM hacking, searching for values, finding pointers, and making simple codes. This is not aimed for very complex hacks and cheats, its more for the beginers that would like to get started.

http://www.bsodtv.org/node/21

I would suggest the download version, streaming video is always kinda' crappy. Either way, enjoy!

(can one of the admins add the HTML code to embed the video here? That way im not whoring out BSoD as much?)

I do a lot of tutoring and explaining. I have a very wonderful gift of analogy. I can break things down, explain them in a way you can understand, and not be a condescending jackass. I can be rough around the edges, overly aggressive, and very foul though. Thanks for the kudos.

In time I may do more but my primary focus is on BSoD. If I do any applicable segments ill post them here as well. Unfortunately that project eats up more than enough of my spare time. Setting up to record a Wii RAM Hacking or other console based tutorial takes a lot of time in itself. Then the editing, compression, uploading, web-code... Thats all time id rather spend actually doing RAM hacking (or various naughty things with my girlfriend that involves cameras, RC cars, and rabbits... dont ask).

Yep... thats why i did it. A lot of people were asking 'simple' questions, and a lot of people that watch BSoD that ask for console stuff requested the Wii RAM Hacking, so... why the heck not!

If you ave the ability to make a positive change, you have the responsibility to do so. Hopefully we can get James0x57 a capture card, im half tempted to mail him mine, that way we can get more skilled WiiRD hackers to do some videos. Some of the codes made for mario galaxy blow mind!

thanks Redsoxrox. Ive been told quite a few time I have a gift for teaching. To be honest I have been a mentor to many people and helped them get started in different aspects of tech. Thats why I started BSoD.

Im going on a trip soon. I will be helping my friend set up a walk in tech workshop call The Loiter Lab, where people can come in an learn fun and interesting stuff with consoles, electronics, radio, wifi , bluetooth, hardware, software, and all that jazz. Im hoping to be able to get in contact with the school so we can se up a 2 day per week after school program for anyone thats interested.

Just finally got around to watching this.

I have to say that if I were to get into hacking, this would be the video that would put me in the right steps. Anything I'd want to do that's much harder... probably would get guidance from someone. However, this is a big help for people who want to get started. It looks so easy too and I mostly didn't know half the stuff you said you had to know at the beginning of the video to understand this. Point is, this video helped me understand what the WiiRD application looks like and how it works, which I'm finally glad to understand!

Now, if only WiiRD was for the Mac. :(

Thank you SO much for doing the Video Tutorial (capitalized because it deserves it). Using just what you've shown, I think I'm able with my previous knowledge and experience of hacking DS AR codes without trainer toolkit for my own use, and GC AR codes, as well as having a pretty good understanding of hex, when my USB gecko arrives 1-2 weeks from now, I'm 99.99% sure that I'll be able to come up with codes for games where others have not ventured, or tried and failed.

When I have time. This segment took me 9 hours to do (total). Between Dumping DV footage, doing the hack live via capture box, editing, encoding, transcoding, uploading, and creating the intro.

Id rather wait for a fully stable build of GeckoOS though. It seems things will be making a lot of chances soon, and I dont want to do a tutorial on a tool, and a week later its useless (the tutorial), especially when it takes a good chunk of the free time I have on the weekends.

Great tutorial, I enjoyed the use of the graphical interface and the game interactions. Suggestion, next time is to add a subtitle or closed caption, in your video, for the hearing impaired. Then this way everyone can benefit from your video, and probably wont flood the forum with a simple how to questions.

Title: Video Tutorial: Intro to Wii Ram hacking
Post by: Foxx on September 16, 2008, 11:26:06 AM
I could try to do that, but to be honest it would take me even MORE time to do. That video wasnt a simple 1 hour job. It took closer to 9 hours to put together. I am also afraid the captions might block some of the stuff on screen. Maybe someone could make a subtitle file for me that you can load it into your player along with the video, that way users have the chance to enable/disable the subtitle tracks.

Wow, that is a long time, The time you spent putting it together seems to paid off. I like tutorial that is easy to fallow through and understandable, than a rushed up tutorial that is very difficult to understand. You have made sure that it is easy to follow through and understandable, by taking the time to make the tutorial. Kudos to you.

Hey nice tut foxx i just watched through the whole thing and i like it, good tut. Maybe you can make a tut now on how to search for unknown values? I think alot of people here on the usb gecko forums would like to know how to search for unknown values. I can't wait until i get the money to get a USB Gecko!

lol I'll give a little run down of what I know about asm so far if it helps... certainly not as god as what foxx could do, but this is the general idea.

Basically you need to first get the area you want to hack generally, so say if your doing something with health, find your health the normal way, and set a breakpoint on its address, then get hit.

Should spit out a result, now you're going to need some understanding of asm, or even just a reference, use google I guess. Have a little look around and figure out what you're doing, and what you want to do with the code. Simply inject with a hook (the address the breakpoint spat out usually) , then use Link's asm code maker, to write the asm that you want, and it will spit out the code for you. Explaining asm is a little hard to do in a little step, but you definately need to read up on the actual language. With it you can do codes like FLIGHT like this

Find the controller address (or if you're good with code types I guess you could use the wiird controller address, i'm not sure how to incorperate this into you asm though)
Check if the controller address == the button you want to fly up
If its not, jump to the end of the asm, and exit
If it IS add 0x0010 to the Z co-ordinates

Something like this is fairly easy if you just equip yourself with a reference, and a clear idea of what you want to do in your head. But definately get the app Link made, it makes the asm code type a lot easier because you don't have to look at the hex for every command, it just does all the work for you ;)

Just do screencaptures with voiceovers. That segment was pulled out of one of my BSoD episodes, thats why i sat in front of the cam, and only did a 'short' video. Once the nre gecko OS is out ill try and do some more, but ive just been really busy lately. Also I dont want to do a video, then 2 weeks later a new unannounced geckoOS or other tool comes out making the tutorial obsolete.

First you have to search for an unknown value, then transform and do an not equal search, then an equal search, transform again, do another not equal search... etc.

Depending on code types, codes can have multiple lines.. the code type document was published with WiiRd so you should have it - otherwise take a look at http://l0nk.org/codetypes.html .

If you're new to hacking the biggest advice is: do what Foxx says.. infinite lives for Mario Galaxy, infinite arrows for Zelda.. that's where to start - not super codes with assembly tricks and button activators and all that.

@ardemii

good luck doing that. It's one thing when you're in a flat environment, it's another when you're in 3D space. Its a lot harder to make mario's height stop moving in 3D. You're probably better off trying to make the ice freeze using one of those switches and trace the assembly that way.

Just a simple suggestion---could you put the video it on youtube? if not, its fine, its just the download is taking forever, and with the choppy school internet connection that turns on and off periodically, it makes it hard to download or view on the site given.
