Title: Nintendo Wii U Release Date And Price Revealed
Post by: 111 on September 13, 2012, 06:04:11 PM
I didn't know if anyone saw this or not, so I figured that I would post it here...

Nintendo Wii U Release Date And Price Revealed

The Wii U has a release date. Nintendo's console will be released on November 18. It will come in two versions, a Basic and Deluxe set.  The Deluxe set will cost you $349 and the basic version will run $299.

As we learned during Nintendo's Japanese press event last night (http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/727913/wii-u-japanese-release-date-announced-by-nintendo-coming-in-december/), the Wii U will have 2GB of memory, 1GB for games and 1 GB for system memory. Its discs will have a 25GB capacity and are not Blu-Ray. It will be backwards compatible with the Wii. Additionally, the console will support all Wii accessories straight out of the box.

The Premium bundle will come with a console, a controller, an HDMI cable, power cradles for your Wii U pad, a 32 GB HDD, and a subscription to Nintendo Network Premium which offers 10% discounts on downloadable software, while the Basic bundle will come with just the console, a controller, and an 8GB HDD.

(More details as they are revealed.)

That's actually not a bad price at all even for the deluxe/premium one.

The HDD size is kind of disappointing though considering the other previous gen systems were in the 100s of GBs.

Hopefully the hard drive is just a simple 2.5" one, like in the PS3.  Then you can just go buy your own.

hmm...although at those capacities, maybe it's an SSD?

Anyone else pre-order today, I Decided on the Deluxe set myself along with New Mario Bros, from Gamestop.

I'll probably grab a pre-order for the Deluxe after I check my finances/get paid.

I'm not going to buy it at launch. Doesn't seem even remotely worth it.

Preordering a Deluxe one whenever I get down to EB.

Also, the memory capacity is externally expandable. (Through the use of an external hard drive.)

Not sure to get one...
I probably won´t ever have homebrew on it and I don´t like their tablet controller.
When the Wii was launched, the controls convinced me, nothing else.

It might be worth getting a launch one...because subsequent machines might have patched exploits.  Kinda like how early adopters of the Wii get to have Bootmii as boot2.

A 1080p Wii with a tablet controller should be interesting, to say the least.

I don´t like their tablet controller.
I agree with this, it seems big and bulky. But the CCP and wiimote are compatible.

I put down 50 bucks yesterday to pre-order a Deluxe one.

Five more days to go... and I have another $150 to pay off on it.

I doubt that I will be getting one at launch (unless a store has some extra consoles in stock  :-\), since I didn't bother to pre-order one.  I'll be interested to see/hear what happens when people attempt to run exploits like the Smash Stack on it.  I'm guessing that all exploits, including that one, will be blocked.

I'll let you know what I think of it... although I probably won't be trying to hack it...

I've taken Monday off to game/goof around.

lol ;D
If at least one of the old exploit work I´m going to laugh my ass off.

I probably won´t get a Wii-U, no matter how things turn out. I´m not convinced in needing another console atm.

When you have a full time job in the real world and disposable income to spare, it's worth it. Hahaha.

While this is interesting... I somehow doubt that Homebrew Channel and all our other fun little non-legit apps will get carried over...

Since it verifies the titles/licenses with your Wii Shop account, it won't transfer any homebrew, unfortunately.

I don't think I'll bother even transferring everything over, at the very least, before I get any input on how the transfer reacts to the HBC installed, etc.

Only time will tell how easily the Wii Mode will be cracked, though...

Opened it up... put it together... and now I'm leaving it alone because it has to update itself. Which is silly.

Secondary Update:

I lucked out at the initial update only took ~1 hour for me instead of the OMGWTFBBQ long ass times that people who got the system earlier today suffered.

So far... it's fun I'll admit, but nothing jumps out at me yet.

I have to say, I thought that the Smash Stack would be fixed on the Wii U as well.  Maybe they really can't fix it.  Apparently you can't install things like the Homebrew Channel (yet).  I would love it if the homebrew program Devolution was able to work on the Wii U eventually, and you could run all of your old GameCube games.  Of course, that depends on if tueidj ever plans to support it on the Wii U, and if HW_AHBPROT access is possible.  Nonetheless, I'm guessing that there is a very good chance that this will help hackers to understand how the Wii U works.  In addition...

If I read it right, Crediar seems to have found an IOS exploit in Wii mode which exposes Wii mode keys.

SSBB ftw in two ways! Epic game and "unpatchable" unsigned code loading ;D

It seems to look good after all...
the video uploader even managed to load some homebrew using the old exploits which is awesome!
Gecko OS and back to hacking on the first day. Shouldn´t it work? Even if it´s just the Wii mode.
Crediar also had some success. Way to go O0

If I read it right, Crediar seems to have found an IOS exploit in Wii mode which exposes Wii mode keys.

From what I understand, and I could be wrong on this, the keys basically mean nothing.  The keys are the same keys that are from the Wii console, with the exception of the console keys.

However, IOS does not normally allow access to these keys without an IOS exploit (as you said).  Since there is a known IOS exploit on the Wii mode side of the Wii U (as this is proof of), it could allow users to do other things, like install unsigned/unofficial programs.  Of course, if that's the case, this would mean that they may be closer to having a way to install things like the Homebrew Channel.

Again, I could be wrong on all of that.

According to this site (http://wiiubrew.org/wiki/WiiMode), it appears that Indiana Pwns and Bathaxx work as well, with two other game exploits still untested.  Personally, it amazes me that Nintendo did not bother to try and block these on the Wii U.  Letterbomb has been fixed, however.

I would assume that Gecko OS would work, although I haven't seen a video of it being used on the Wii U yet...

Remember the SD Gecko?  It's possible that could happen again.

Although, IMO, the more likely thing to happen is a modified IOS that opens a port over wifi for doing hacks.

Is it a system or attachment like Sega 32X?
Title: Re: Nintendo Wii U Release Date And Price Revealed

It does have 4 USB ports...
Title: Re: Nintendo Wii U Release Date And Price Revealed

Four USB *host* ports, probably.  Very little hardware supports "USB On-The-Go" or USBOTG, which allows the port to be either a host or device.  USB is not really designed to share data between two hosts.  It wouldn't be impossible, just really awkward.

How awkward is it to have a cable like this:

USB Host <-> FTDI <-> FIFO <-> FTDI <-> USB Host

Surely someone must manufacture a cable like this, right?  It seems so simple that I can't believe no one's tried it.  And the new Hi-Speed FTDI chips are really fast... not as good as native USB, but on the order of 30 times faster than the USB Gecko's FTDI chip if I recall correctly.

Well, it looks like installing the Homebrew Channel on a Wii U in Wii mode has been achieved...

Wii U Teaser

We finally have a YouTube channel and we thought we’d kick things off with a little teaser:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96k0YgOqHTA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96k0YgOqHTA)

Keep in mind that this is purely a demonstration at this stage. Depending on how things progress and what direction development takes, we may or may not release something like this in this form. Please don’t ask for release dates. We’d rather spend time investigating the new system than putting together a release that may or may not end up being the Right Way to do things in the future ;).

Please ignore the blue blinks. The monitor kind of sucks at syncing to component video sometimes. I would’ve used HDMI, but the Wii U cannot output analog audio simultaneously with HDMI (at least not for the Wii U menu part), and I cannot capture HDMI audio.
