Title: Skyward Sword wants an update...
Post by: keys2tkingdom on November 21, 2011, 01:36:36 AM
Hello, I m running a NTSC Wii with system 4.3 and BootMii and the Homebrew channel already installed. When I put in my retail copy of the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (here after called, LoZSS) the disc channel showed the system upgrade icon.

I didn't think there was an update for system 4.3! I never update my wii unless I need to because of BootMii and my homebrew channel. I'd like to play LoZSS but I don't know how to update my Wii safely (or if I should at all!).

Can somebody please tell me what I should do about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.
I may have use the homebrew channel for gecko for about four years, but I'm essentially computer illiterate (but I can follow simple instructions)! So if at all possible, answers should be written in a simple format as if you where telling a noob -which by most definitions is what I am- what to do like:

1. Download X, Y, and Z programs from ABC website
2. Put X program in XXX folder on your SD card
3. On the ZZ menu select the YY option.

and so on... So for any trouble this may cause, but I just don't want to brick my Wii.

EDIT: Question answered.

You can run the game through Gecko to bypass updates.

Alternatively, you could use something like, StartPatch to block disc updates.

You can also use WUFE to install the necessary IOS's for the game to run.

WUFE? What's that?

It's way easier to just use Gecko OS to play the game.

There are two types of updates.  System Menu and IOS.  You do not want System Menu updates.  However, you DO want IOS updates.  Gecko OS will install only the IOS updates without doing System Menu updates.  Unfortunately, if the System Menu should be updated, the Disc Channel will never let you play without updating, so you would always have to use Gecko OS.

So far the only games I know that are whining for System Menu updates are Kirby's Return to Dreamland and Skyward Sword...
I haven't seen (or noticed) any IOS updates from the two, unless someone can correct me regarding that.

The last IOS update I've installed was from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, I think.  Was IOS51 if I remember right.

I'm running a Wii that is still on System Menu 3.1

Skyward Sword would have asked for a System Menu update, but I boot all my games through GeckOS and it never even mentioned an IOS update.

Game works perfectly.

If you use Gecko OS, you do not need PriiLoader.  PriiLoader is only useful if you want to use the disc channel.  Gecko OS will never update the System Menu and will always install any required IOS.

If your Gecko OS didn't install the correct IOS, you must have done something to your Wii to mess it up.  I know this works because it happened to me when I first loaded Super Mario Galaxy 2.  The fact that the Disc Channel gave you error 002 proves it, because it would only give you that error if you had some PriiLoader hack disabling disc updates (EDIT: or if you had one of those pirate discs that removed the update partition...I think they're called brick block.  But you're using a retail disc, so that's ruled out).  PriiLoader prevents all updates, not just System Menu updates, which is why you shouldn't use it.

You must always use Gecko OS (or whatever your preferred loader is), you can't go back to the Disc Channel ever again.  Just because Gecko OS installed the correct IOS doesn't mean that the Disc Channel will now work.  The Disc Channel may detect that the System Menu is out of date (if a newer version is on disc) and will ask you to update anyway.

The Disc Channel just sucks.

Touche`, I didn't consider the whole family prevention aspect.  +1 Sharkbyte

I suppose I should also plug WUFE - Wii Update File Extractor - as another way to install an IOS given a retail disc.
