Title: What do I need to have to use codes?
Post by: Doomware on June 02, 2011, 12:22:46 AM
I've been reading the guides, and my heads been turned upside down with whats working, whats not, etc. Can someone please speak in plain English the equipment and programs I need to:

-Make and use codes to alter gameplay(Ex.:Inf. Money, Health, etc.)
-And How not to ruin my Wii or its files in the process when using the programs and equipment.

P.S.: Sorry for bold, but a few people might miss it in plain text.

1. A wii
2. An SD Card
3. The installation files for home brew channel
4. One of the more recent games used to install home brew channel, i.e. Lego Indiana Jones, Smash Bros Brawl etc.
5. Gecko OS 1.9.3 (SD Card application)

Now what's your system menu at? 4.0? 4.3?

There are a lot of guides on how to do this and they should be fairly self-explanatory in the long run.

Version: 4.3U
Available Exploitable Game:Super Smash Bros. Brawl

There is one thing that REALLY confuses me...it talks about making sure certain options on the SD card are turned off/reformatted this or that way, can you give directions to where to do these things?

This is the most comprehensive guide we have.  Not sure if you've read it yet or not.

http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,6843.0.html

I can't think of any "options on the SD card".  Can you link to the guide you saw that in?

One aspect of confusion is whether you can install bootmii as boot2 or not.  The Hackmii Installer will let you know.  If you can install bootmii as boot2, then I highly, highly suggest doing so, and immediately after installation you should make a backup copy of your NAND.

---

As far as I know, just put the Hackmii installer on your SD card, load up the Stack Smash exploit, run the Hackmii Installer, and then drop some useful apps into the apps folder on the SD card (Gecko OS and FTPii come to mind).  Then put the GCT codes for the game you want in the right folder and launch Gecko OS.

Ok, I run the procedures and at the end of the day I'll tell you if I have any problems.

I don't know where I saw those "Options" other than it was somewhere on the wiki.

It talks about a private folder in the download, but all I see is the BIN file.

Please post a link to whatever guide you're referencing.  It will help tremendously.

The private folder is where game saves and such are located.  If you have already copied a save from the Wii's NAND to the SD card using Nintendo's "Data Management" in the System Menu, then the private folder should already exist.

The guide here under exploits-SmashStack. http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,6843.0.html

The private folder is not in the download.  The private folder exists on the SD card.

SD:\private\wii\app\rsbe\st\st_080805_0933.bin

So your SD card must have a private folder at the root of the card.  Inside that folder is a wii folder.  Inside that folder is an app folder.  etc.  And then, once you have the folder structure created, you can drop the bin file into that folder.

Mine doesn't seem to have one...how do I reveal hidden files?

edit:nvm, I've never used this on the Wii, so do I need to use it on it first?

edit2: Ugh, after this it looks like a have a whole round of other things to load to use the codes...

You don't have to reveal hidden files.  You can just make new folders.

Yes, you will have to load Gecko OS into SD:\apps.  I also recommend FTPii; it's an FTP server for the Wii, so you can load files onto the SD card without pulling it out of the Wii all the time.

You'll also need an SD:\codes folder, and you'll need to place GCT files into it.  You can use the database to directly generate gct files.  For instance, this allows you to create GCT files for Tales of Symphonia.  http://geckocodes.org/index.php?gct=RT4EAF#addcodes

What about the IOS36 Patch?

And where can I download a legitimate copy of the Homebrew channel, and where do I put it?

You only need to patch IOS36 if you plan on using channel cheats (i.e. cheating on WiiWare/VC games), or if you want to use the rebooter.

I edited my previous post, and I guess I will need it then.

http://bootmii.org/download/

The zip file contains a boot.elf file.  Place boot.elf at the root of the SD card

SD:\boot.elf

Then, when you run Smash Stack, it will run boot.elf.  That will install HBC.

Ok final question before I try to run it on the Wii,

whenever I try to get the GCT files at the Website you mentioned, it says no codes selected, how do I select codes?

Click "Add Codes" (NOT "Add More Codes")

You'll be taken to a page full of checkboxes.  Check the codes you want to add.  Then click download gct.

EDIT:

By the way, if you go to the database page for any game, you can get to the add codes page by clicking the "->GCT" button at the top.

The problem was I erased codes on the page before, thinking that was how I "deselected" them.

Where can i find the NUS downloader as mentioned in the guide?

Edit:Nvm, figured out I needed to toggle options for that one.

Thank you,dcx2 for all of your assistance. :)
