Title: Need Help Installing USB Gecko/Getting the Wii & Computer to Communicate With It
Post by: Spin New Yasha on December 10, 2010, 09:19:17 PM
I'm fairly new to the Wii, but in the few months I've been using it, I've successfully softmodded my niece's Wii and when I eventually got my own, I softmodded and hardmodded mine post-warranty.  I have also dabbled in simple hacking for cheats ever since I got a Gameshark Pro for the original PlayStation, so I figured a USB Gecko would be a fine addition to my collection of gaming peripherals that I use frequently.

Anyways, after installing the current FTDI drivers (2.08.08), downloading WiiRD and installing Gecko OS 1.9.0.1 as a channel, I seem to be missing something … the Wii doesn't recognize the device in either GC memory slot (no gecko icon in HBC, Gecko OS' "About" page says "USB Gecko not found"), and WiiRD goes on a loop whenever I open it:> gamestatus
Sending command
Error sending command
Resetting USB Gecko device driver!
Connection resetted!
(repeat)

Anybody here knows what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks.

I normally use "Default" or "VBI", there was a video on youtube that I followed as a tutorial that suggested "oslepeardthread", which I didn't have, but I did have "OSSleepThread", which I tried.  I also tried "AXNextFrame", "GXFlush", and "GXDraw".

All of the above didn't work for me.  The only hooktypes I didn't try are "GC Pad", "Wii Pad", and "No hooks".

Yeah, it's in slot B.  Just to make sure, Wii settings show my GC memory card in A and the message "This Device Cannot Be Used" in B.

Only game I really tried booting with the USB Gecko is Mega Man 10, but the device doesn't seem to work.  Nothing in WiiRDGUI is selectable or editable and the WiiRD cmd just shows the same gamestatus/"Error Sending Command" loop.  I don't know what other games I should try, though.

try a wii game..
Trying to boot "Babysitting Mama" (SBWE5G) off WODE.  Works and boots off Disc Channel, seeing as how I ripped the original disc myself.  However, on Gecko OS, the screen has been stuck on this message:Setting up drive..
Reading DVD stats..

I usually use Neogamma if I want to cheat with Wii disc games.  (I haven't tried cheating with GC games, though.)

hmm ok, first off all, you never can hook games via disc channel.
if u have a backup of the game, start neogamma, turn Ossleepthread on and boot the game.  :)

Yeah, I know that, I'm just saying the disc game itself is working.  And when I'm cheating, I use neogamma instead of the disc chan (backup or original) or Gecko instead of the Wiiware/VC's chan.  Not that it matters, anyways, just thought I should let you know since you're being thorough. :)

Anyways, Neogamma with OSSleepThread doesn't help.  WiiRD is giving me the same looped message and nothing in GUI is selectable.

Yeah, it's in slot B.  Just to make sure, Wii settings show my GC memory card in A and the message "This Device Cannot Be Used" in B.
Does this mean you left the GC Memory Card in when you tried Gecko?
If so, remove it and try again with only the USB Gecko in your Wii.

Same result w/o GC Memcard; "USB Gecko Not Found" + "Error sending command" loop.

use a real original game disc. use OSSleapthread. and depending.. you are using Wiird right? wiird can create the connection to geckoOS by just being in the main "geckoOS screen" gecko.NET has to have the game started with geckoOS and then it can hook. otherwise.. idk whats wrong for you :/

If that's the case, then it shouldn't matter if I'm using an original disc, backup, WODE, whatever.  I've been using GeckoOS & WiiRD from the beginning of this dilemma.

Anyways, I tried something as elementary as just taking out the USB Gecko and putting it back in.  WiiRD shows the following message:> gamestatus
Sending command
Command successful
Game status is unknown!
> Version
Gecko server version: 0x00
>
The GUI shows the dialog box:Either the Gecko/RF is not started, or it is not supporter by WiiRD/WiiRD GUI.  Retry? (y/n)I click yes, and this happens:> hook
Resetting USB Gecko device driver!
Starting game - No patches applied! Game is started using VI hook!
> sendfail
And it goes back to this dreaded loop:> gamestatus
Sending command
Error sending command
Resetting USB Gecko device driver!
Connection resetted!
(repeat ×∞)

Meanwhile, the Wii is on GeckoOS and still doesn't see the USB Gecko.

Also, I've been reading up on a few of the topics on this forum how Adictron.eu has a bad reputation for their USB Geckos being overpriced and DOA, and I'm really scared because that's where I got mine.  Even worse because I live in the USA and it shipped from Spain.

Anyways, I'm guessing I either have to save up for one of the new SE units, try to see if I can run the Dolphin emu and use its cheat search function, or just request my codes instead…

If you don't see the Gecko icon in HBC light up, then something is wrong and no amount of drivers or hooks is going to fix it.

I would unplug everything except the USB Gecko in slot B.  Any memory cards or GCN controllers or anything in the USB.  They shouldn't make a difference, but your hardmod makes this more difficult to diagnose.

Uh-oh, something must be wrong… ???

No gecko icon in HBC, even with all USB's and GC controllers, etc. unplugged.  I would take this to the logical extreme and take out the WODE chip (still works w/o the USB) and unplug the LED's off the Crystal Chameleon ii-case.  I know, I know, I went a little crazy with the mods when Gamestop's pre-owned 30-day warranty expired.  Disabling all that would be relatively easy, except dismantling the case and/or putting it back together is a pain with all the small screws and the case's tight fit that makes the screwholes difficult to align.

Errm, I dunno.  I'd probably have to wait until I see my niece from out of town to try it on her Wii, which is softmod-only.  Other than that, don't know anyone local with a Wii, let alone one with softmod-only or willing to softmod.  (Loner IRL, haha :P :( )

Anyways, if it is the hardmods that are at fault with the USB Gecko not connecting, I don't know if getting the new SE would help.  It would've made a good excuse to get it down the road if my unit was defective, though.

If the usb gecko icon doesn't show up in HBC, i'd say it's a drivers problem. Keep in mind that the drivers are only installed for the usb port on your pc where you had the usb gecko plugged in during the installation.

I'm not sure how it's a driver issue. the usbgecko icon should show in hbc even if it's not attached to your PC

Hmm, ok, i didn't know that. Then it could only be drivers related if it's actually connected to the pc, but somehow i doubt that in this case.

Hmm… GC memcard menu under Wii data management sees the USB Gecko as a non-usable device whenever I put it in either slot, but HBC shows no gecko icon.  And as something different, I tried just putting the USBGecko without any USB connection to the computer, even though it'd be pointless.  I think I have a real problem here…

If it's not drivers or hooks, could it be a cIOS I'm missing or a bad one I put in?  Something I installed in the Wii that makes HBC not see the device as an USBGecko?  Should I make a list of different apps and stuff I installed since I first put in HBC if it makes a difference?  The list shouldn't be that long, it's only been modded for a little more than a month…

Or is this strictly a hardware issue?

the EXI interface needed by usbgecko is independent of any IOS.

I'm no expert, but it seems as if the usbgecko is busted in some fashion

So I guess SciiFii wouldn't affect HBC's USBGecko detection?  I was thinking that that may be it, as I installed it per a quickie tutorial I was reading.  (First time softmodding 4.3u; but before that, I used bannerbomb on my niece's 4.2u)

correct, SciiFii won't alter HBC's code so they couldn't mess up the EXI interface.

Could someone help? I got my USB Gecko SE, installed the drivers, and the HBC recognizes it. However Gecko dotNET keeps giving the error "Connection to the USB Gecko has failed! Do you want to retry?" no matter how many times I try same error occurs.
Using a Mac if that helps.

I finally had an opportunity to try the USBGecko on my niece's Wii, and lo and behold, HBC doesn't show the icon, and GeckoOS doesn't find it.  You called it, megazig, I must have a defective unit, courtesy of adictron eu.

Well, now that I know it's a bad unit, does anyone know exactly what part inside the USBGecko to replace for HBC to acknowledge it as a USBGecko?  The casing is suspiciously easy to open and I'm in the mood for messing with small, intricate pieces of electronics.  Or better yet, is there a way of putting in on-board memory and re-purposing the device as a GC USB memory card adapter clone?  (I know one already exists, in fact, I have one.)
