Title: Riivolution files not loading in game
Post by: toonlink444 on December 01, 2010, 02:40:50 PM
Ok I have a wii version 2.1U and riivolution will not load the custom courses that people have made for mario kart wii. to be more clear riivolution will show the courses and I can enable and disable them, but when I select them in mario kart wii the screen turns black. (And is this the right place to post this)

wow, you have wii menu 2.1U?  You have had your wii for a long time! I don't know that much about riivolution, but it might be your version number. don't update though. I am sure 111 or dcx2 will show up later and can help you futher.
yep you must have a higher firmware version... no issue for these users.

4.3 kills homebrew so should I upgrade to 4.2 and if so is there a safe way.

basically 4.0 was already a homebrew killer.. homebrew channel renamed to JODI
4.2 was another one.. new hbc name again

So well.. if you have an up-to-date homebrew channel (1.08) you can SAFELY upgrade your Wii to 4.3 from a technical viewpoint.. the message of the forum above is just because many complain "Oh I upgraded my HBC is away".. if you have a recent HBC.. then 4.3 will only overwrite BootMii as boot2 - a boot2 update CAN(!) fail however those cases are VERY rare.. if your Wii however has been turned into a major backup loading system with multiple unsigned channels and whatever, an upgrade might break it.. the Homebrew channel alone won't do damage..

Riivolution should not either.. however, several old back-up loaders might block updates so I'd be careful there!

Do not downgrade anything, ever.

If you have HBC 1.0.8, then 4.3U is safe.

If you want to upgrade your SM a little bit at a time, you could try using DOP Mii to install a middle-of-the-road SM, but there are probably a lot of problems that you'll run into with some required IOS that the newer SM might depend on and if your SM can't boot you're half-way bricked...111 might have more answers.

Seriously, 4.3 is okay.  Especially if you make a bootmii backup of your NAND before you upgrade; you could then use bootmii to roll back to 2.1.

BTW, this doesn't belong in Off Topic.  More like Wii Help.  I'll move it there in a day so you can see this reply.

I would stay at 2.1 if I were you, but its your choose. If I had a wii in 2006 I would have stayed at 2.0. Its hard to find a wii anymore that has 4.1 or lower as people who don't homebrew or know about homebrew generally tend just to update. (thinking they will get "behind the scenes enhancements") And wiis in stores have 4.3 with the new disc drives which suck. I didn't get my wii until the day 4.1 came out.

by the way, does anyone know when the twilight hack was first released? was there an early exploit before the twilight hack?

There is no public exploit before the Twilight Hack. The first Wii homebrew demonstrations were on chipped Wiis which ate self-burnt discs as the Signature checking error (Trucha exploit called nowadays) was known quite early.
For updates.. well, I do not really see much of a reason why you'd really want to stick with 2.1 - I run 4.1 and I am quite happy as I have VERY many WiiWare games which I run using the SD menu. And my Wii is launch - it came with 1.0 you might say. As long as a Wii has a recent Homebrew Channel losses for general use are currently low by upgrading.. I do not know much homebrew which really suffers from upgrading if that application is not designed to run original games in a way they were not intended to (USB loader, copied discs, whatever). The new drives have a backup protection that's known. However, as I said: if you want to use your Wii for legitimate purposes there is no reason not to upgrade. Future Gecko OS versions will btw. also run Channels and WiiWare without the need of a Trucha enabled IOS - there is no roadmap they'll be released when they're done, however, once they are out, I will officially remove that "do NOT update" message up there, as technically channel loading is the only reason why I have a 4.1 Wii with old IOS36)

And just to say that fact: I also did consider upgrading to 4.3 - however, due to the channel loading thing I hold back. Once channel loading works in Gecko OS. I will!

@toonlink444: How did you upgrade? Did you run the official update from Nintendo. Updaters by Waninkoko and such leave out stuff on purpose.. as your Wii was so old.. it might be an option to run an official true Nintendo upgrade. Gecko OS will lose the ability to load channels however you can patch that back by installing an old IOS36 with Dop-Mii.

Re: channel loading, DOP Mii can't install patched IOS anymore, it was removed around version 13 or so.  There is an app called Simple IOS Patcher, it uses AHBPROT to patch IOS36, so it works on all regions, no temporarily downgrading IOS15 or anything.
