Title: Clarify?
Post by: hawkeye2777 on September 22, 2010, 04:59:11 AM
What is the forum's rule on discussing piracy, backup loaders, etc.? It doesn't seem like the one in the Forum Rules applies much... considering threads are locked just by a mention of a word when the rules say general discussion is allowed. It seems like all I'd have to do is mention a Wii modchip or that I was using a USB loader when the point of that thread could have nothing to do with how to pirate or use a backup loader.

It's been bugging me for a while now, so I'd thought I would ask; maybe I'm just interpreting the rule different.

I think we try to draw the line at helping people pirate.  I believe the goal was to keep this site as a codes-and-hacking-only type forum.  If you want to know why your game isn't working with the USB loader, there's a better forum for that type of question.

Now, I know that e.g. the Metroid thread has a few mentions of how to make MOM play on USB loaders.  Something about needing a certain cIOS rev.  Technically, that's helping people pirate games, and I believe we could justifiably remove those posts...but I'm not that big of a dick.  :)  However, if it were a separate thread instead of in the support thread, yeah I'd probably feel the desire to lock it.

If the point of the thread has nothing to do with USB loaders...don't mention them.  Keep the topic focused on the problem.  But when you call out that you're playing such and such a game on dolphin or a USB loader, it just screams pirate.

I think in most cases topics or posts will be locked/removed to just keep that kind of discussion at a minimum. If some people do it and we turn a blind eye, it's very likely to snowball and get worse. We definitely don't want that.
