Just a quick query about the latest drivers for the USB Gecko on x64 Windows 7.
The latest drivers are currently 2.08.02 and were released about a week ago.
I downloaded them, installed them and they appear to be working perfectly.
However, I no longer get the safe-eject icon in the system tray. I like to use this to stop a connected device, even if it isn't required for a specific device.
I would just like to know if anybody else has this kind problem with the tray icon not appearing?
Is there any risk to my Gecko if I was to unplug without using the safe-eject?
I'm on XP and it has never shown up with the safe disconnect option. =(
Sounds like my Gecko operation has returned to a "normal" state XD
No idea how I got it to show the safe disconnect option. It showed it when I used vista and again when I used Windows 7. It just vanished after I updated the drivers lol
Ah, well. If I make sure that I've not got WiiRD or Gecko.net running when I go to unplug my Gecko then all should be fine :)
The driver update works and, so far, I've not had any errors while doing searches like I used to :D
Most USB devices are okay to unplug at random. There's a feature of the USB device stack called "Surprise Removal". Basically, as long as you don't have any non-volatile storage (like a USB hard drive or flash drive that's busy writing data internally), there's no problem with yanking the USB Gecko.
When testing the search-recovery feature of Gecko.NET, I would unplug the USB Gecko in the middle of a dump, and then plug it back in, and continue.
Also, if you have problems with errors during searches, you might want to buy a ferrite bead and put one at each end of the USB cord. That might help reduce your data error rates.
I wasn't aware of the "Surprise Removal" feature :o Pretty sensible, too, when thinking about it...
The removal of any form of storage device while it's being read/written will pretty much always corrupt something. Especially if the contents of the media is "cached".
I was just a little hesitant about the USB Gecko lol Data pens are 10 a penny so easy to replace, the only loss is the data.
My Gecko is a valuable tool to me and getting harder to get each day lol

I did actually consider a ferrite bead after reading the mention you made in one of your posts a while back. I might give this a good thought.
I've had too many searches go bad when I knew I was getting close lol
And some bright spark who worked on the design of my laptop chose, for reasons I will NEVER fathom, to put the USB ports right next to the Power supply port....that retard owes me two ferrite beads XD
