Hi, I'm new. I'm having a problem, I hope you guys can help me :)
I'm launching Gecko 1.9.3.1 with Smash Stack with no problem, but it always freezes Brawl whenever I'm going to start a multiplayer match, right before I'm able to choose a stage (doesn't happen in single player modes). This happens even if the cheat codes are turned off. I wanted to try a different Gecko OS version, but I can find only .DOL files, and apparently Smash Stack works only with .ELF files.
Do you know what I can do about it? My Wii has absolutely nothing installed, do I need to install something else first? Because I loved the idea of running homebrew without having to install anything, simply with Smash Stack.
Thanks in advance!
maybe your save file is corrupt, delete it and retry.
You could save it before though :p
My Brawl save file? I don't think so, this doesn't happen when I'm not using Gecko OS. And you can't transfer a Brawl save file anyway :'(
Why are you using Smash Stack? Do you have 4.3?
Why haven't you installed the Homebrew Channel so you don't need exploits anymore?
smash stack is for installing the homebrew channel.
I'd prefer not having to install HBC, I thought Smash Stack would be good enough :'(
No need to defend HBC, I've used it before and it's great, but I don't want to install it right now.
u must have to put the elf file on the root of ur SD card.
then start ssbb and klick on load stage from SD card.
Is there a reason behind your preference? I can't think of any reason not to install HBC, except maybe if you're worried about trying to send your Wii back for repairs or something.
I would be quite leery about launching programs regularly with exploits. Not only is it slow because you have to boot the game etc, but exploits are by definition bugs. You don't know if the machine is in a safe state when you launch with an exploit. But you do know that HBC boots the Wii into a safe state.
I like having the latest update available, mostly so I can buy WiiWare and VC games. Also, as far as I know, newer games automatically install the latest update anyway, it sucks to avoid playing new games because of that. I haven't upgraded to 4.3 yet, but I will eventually, and all I wanted was being able to use a Brawl cheat to save any replay, regardless of the match length.
You never, ever need to install the latest System Menu from Nintendo. For anything. Ever.
You can use WiiSCU or DOP-Mii to update the shop channel so you can buy WiiWare/VC games.
If the IOS Gecko OS uses has the signing bug, you can launch channels, so you can play any WiiWare/VC games (with cheats!). Don't know if you need an updated System Menu in order to launch WW/VC.
If a new game requires a new IOS, Gecko OS will go out and fetch ONLY the new IOS, without updating the System Menu. This happened to me once, so I know Gecko OS can safely update your Wii so you can play any game.
It´s right, you can play the newest games with gecko os without updating.
But the new firmware 4.3. is different. It doesn´t let you use the wii shopping channel and wii connect24, if you don´t have it.
I used Dop-Mii but didn´t help. Then I updated with fimrware updater, but the wii froze, when I wanted to accept the wii connect24 treaty.
Why? This sucks. I can still don´t use the shopping channel...
Also, that would imply never launching games from the disc channel, right?
It sucks, I want my Wii practically un-modded, but still being able to save my replays :p
then use riivolution with hacks as hackmii installerr boot.
Aka custom track racers, which still have a legit wii!
xD
he wont install hbc so don't talk about riivo without hbc.
what? Why shouldn´t I talk about that?
It´s the safest methode to launch hacks, maybe you could replace riivo boot.dol with gecko OS boot.dol.
Your wii stays unhacked.
Yes, it implies no longer using the Disc Channel. Although if you wanted to, you can use PriiLoader to block automatic updates, and still use the Disc Channel. Honestly, I can't even remember the last time I used the Disc Channel...
Most of your reasons for not modding your Wii seem to be based on misinformation (i.e. new games force updates, can't use shop channel, etc). If you really, really don't want to soft-mod your Wii, then be prepared to deal with the kind of headaches like Brawl freezing. Like I said earlier, exploits are dirty and rely on bugs in the system that can put the machine in an unsafe state...you really shouldn't be booting with an exploit all the time.

Bully, maybe 111 can help you with the DOP-Mii/WiiSCU thing. You can try to PM him and point him to this thread. But I know people have updated their Wii Shop Channel safely.
Well, I'll reconsider modding my Wii again then. Thanks for the help, guys ;)
