Title: Trucha Bug with boot2v4
Post by: Nutmeg on June 22, 2010, 05:37:57 AM
Well, since menu 4.3 is out, the danger of bricking is higher than ever, so I'm trying to get priiloader version 0.4, so that I can prevent and update.  Bootmii as boot2 cannot do system hacks.  It can only restore the NAND.  However, my wii menu is 4.2U and boot2v4 is installed (homebrew is also installed).  Thus, downgrading anything is dangerous.  So, I have made this post for reassurance that what I'm doing is right.

1)  I'm installing the trucha bug restorer version 1.12 so that I can patch IOS36 and IOS37.  I think only IOS36 needs to be patched, so I don't think I will do IOS37.  Is that okay?  How would a patched IOS37 help me?  I just want to install priiloader 0.4 and block all updates.  So, is JUST patching IOS36 okay?

2)  Is it safe to downgrade IOS15?  I know that downgrading anything with boot2v4, is risky.  Do I need to downgrade it in order to patch IOS36?

3)  Do I need to uninstall boot2 and reinstall it as bootmii as IOS?

4)  If I brick, can I use boot2 to restore my NAND?

-Sorry for so many questions, and I know I should have done this long ago.  Any help is appreciated.  Is easier to solve now, then when I'm bricked...

The 4.3 System Menu does not update boot2, so presumably, it should be possible to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.2 if one chose to do so.  The easiest way would be to save a BootMii NAND backup from 4.2, update to 4.3, and if you ever wanted to "downgrade," simply restore the 4.2 NAND backup by using BootMii as boot2.  This is really the only "downgrading" option that I would recommend.  Also, remember to never try to install a NAND backup if you are using BootMii as an IOS.  Although, keep in mind that for homebrew purposes, it is not recommended that you update to 4.3 at this time, as not everything is known about it yet.

1.  Patching IOS36 and IOS37 would probably just give you one more IOS that had the signing and ES_Identify bugs present in them.  It probably wouldn't hurt anything if you patched IOS37.  I believe that some games use IOS37, but the 4.2 System Menu uses IOS70.

2.  Yes, downgrading IOS15 is safe.  For whatever reason, a downgraded IOS15 will work on boot2v4.  Even if it didn't work, it still wouldn't mess with anything important.  Also, yes, I believe that IOS15 needs to be downgraded in order to patch IOS36.

3.  No, I wouldn't uninstall BootMii as boot2.  System Menu 4.3 does not change boot2, so BootMii should still remain even if you were to update to it.  Also, BootMii as an IOS is not for brick protection.

4.  Yes, if you have BootMii installed as boot2, and a NAND backup, you will be able to restore to that state in the event that you bricked your Wii.

I'm not familiar with Priiloader, so I can't help you there.

Okay, thanks for the quick response!  I'll be sure to +1 to your karma.  ;)

For somebody who knows a bit more about priiloader.  Is it compatible with boot2?  That way I can have brick protection, and I can block updates?

-Help is appreciated. +1 for karma  ;D

Do I need to uninstall bootmii as boot2?  When I try to downgrade IOS36, it says that an IOS is needed.  I think that boot2 is patched so that IOS15 cannot be downgraded... Maybe, I'm not sure.

Does anybody know?

No, do not uninstall BootMii as boot2.  The problem has nothing to do with boot2.  Plus, if you remove BootMii as boot2, you lose much of your brick protection.

Are you trying to patch IOS15 offline?  If so, then you will need the following files for the Trucha Bug Restorer to do that...

IOS15-64-v257.wad
IOS15-64-v1031.wad
IOS36-64-v3607.wad
IOS37-64-v5662.wad

Those files can be downloaded on your computer by using NUS Downloader (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/NUS_Downloader), if you choose to patch IOS36 offline.  Also, if you don't want to patch IOS37, then you do not need to download IOS37 with the NUS Downloader.

If you have a reliable internet connection for your Wii, that would likely be much easier, and would not require the NUS Downloader.

Also, make sure that you are using the latest version of the Trucha Bug Restorer, which is 1.13.  In addition, you can read more about the Trucha Bug Restorer here...
