Title: Region free under firmware 3.4E
Post by: osgeck on December 18, 2009, 05:05:22 PM
Hi,

under firmware 3.2, I was able to run a game region free using bannerbomb which loads gecko os directly.
After updating to 3.4E, launching the game from gecko os yields a crash. This also happens with the
latest gecko os 1.9.3 which btw lacks the rebooter options.
I read that 3.4E prevents rebooting with hooks which might explain the behaviour.

What do you recommend in this situation to enable region freeness?

BTW, in case it matters my wii does not permit a boot2 install of bootmii. So far I did not install homebrew
since I don't know how that would help in enabling region freeness.

Sorry, if this has already been answered before but at least I could not find a clear recommendation for
my case.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I cant say for sure, but if i remember correctly Gecko crashes when it is loaded through bannerbomb.
So the solution might be to install the Homebrew Channel and load Gecko through that.

Doesn't twilight hack work on 3.4 firmware?
if homebrew doesn't work,try twilight. :p

Actually, gecko os loads perfectly fine directly from bannerbomb. I tried two 1.9.x gecko os
versions (one with rebooter menu and 1.9.3 which does not have the rebooter option anymore).
Both load perfectly fine. Just when I launch the game from within gecko os, it crashes.

So, I don't see how the twilight hack could help as bannerbomb already works fine.
Moreover, I don't have Zelda but that's of course another issue.

So the main question is: What is the difference between running gecko os directly from
bannerbomb (or twilight which I assume does not make a big difference) or from within
homebrew?

Is there a chance that running gecko os from homebrew under 3.4E enables region freeness,
i.e. anyone can confirm success in a similar situation?

Thanks again for sharing your experience.

Yeah, that is what I meant.
Gecko crashes when loading a game if you load it with Bannerbomb.
So I guess you need to install the Homebrew Channel to fix the problem.

I can confirm that region freeness works like a charm when running gecko os from homebrew
under 3.4E.

Thanks again. Great work.
