Changelog:
Gecko 1.9.3.1
- Fix Gecko Pause Start option
Gecko 1.9.3
- Loading games no longer requires a second disc spin-up
- Added support for the new Homebrew Channel ID
- Fixed channel loading to use the selected hook type, instead of always using the VBI hook
- Improved the 002 error prevention method for channels
- Add support for using cIOS for rebooter
- Fix dol/elf loading
- Add support for System Menu 4.2
- Bug fix for poke function in gameconfig.txt (thanks to WiiPower)
Gecko 1.9.2
- If necessary, cIOS will be used for channel loading
- A few more gameconfig options were added
- Some video mode fixes
Gecko 1.9.1
- The "No Hooks" option should work correctly now
- Displayed code line limit was one line greater than the actual limit, that is now fixed
- Displayed channel names are more complete
- Improved Gamecube disc detection
- Games that use IOS 36 (for example, Super Smash Bros. Brawl) no longer require a second disc spin-up when loading
Gecko 1.9.0.1
- Moved rebooter to a menu item
- Fixed a bug that prevented the codes and patch folder from being found if in data/gecko
- Fixed a bug that caused a core dump if background.png is in the root directory of the SD card
- Language and video mode settings from WiiRD are now used if a game is started from WiiRD
- Fixed a rebooter bug that caused the currently inserted game disc not to show up in the disc channel
Gecko 1.9
- Added channel loading with hooks, channel menu supports same database.txt format as AnyTitle Deleter MOD to replace the channel IDs with channel names (put database.txt at the root of the SD card)
- Ocarina works on channels
- ELF/DOL loading from geckoload now works
- Optionally the directory data/gecko can contain the codes folder, patch folder, gameconfig.txt, config.dat, and background.png instead of the root of the SD card
- GC memory cards are no longer detected as a USB Gecko
- Changed how exit works; if a loader other than the homebrew channel was used (or an old version of the HBC) it will return to the system menu
- Fixed a text overlapping bug that would happen if a disc error occurs and Ocarina is on

Awesome as usual! Putting that on the blog, stickying.. the usual crap you know ;)
awesome! Wii-homebrew.com will add it today to its DB! No need of Traffic waste ;)
Wow, How to hook channel?
WiiRD does not work. lol
when you load gecko os you can choose boot channel
good work.
I'm pretty brkirch won't mind if you give yourself a pat on the back
On another note, brkirch would it be possible to make rebooter a menu option instead of the B Button? Would then fall in line with the rest of the menu and I wouldn't keep pressing it by accident and rebooting :)
Dunno if this bothers anyone else? Might just be me!
Nothing like tweaking a good thing! :)

I've done that a few times myself, accidentally press the B button and reset the system.

You've been informed about this several times already. Gecko doesn't load back up games. Never has and never will unless your Wii has a mod chip and you've stated already that yours doesn't! We can't tell you how to back ups on your Wii because that's against the TOS! Google it and find out.
The funny thing is, you say that your Wii is non-modded even though you say right after that, "I did the twilight hack", thus your Wii is soft-modded!
You can use Gecko to play import games by forcing the region that it is from. With JAP/NTSC-J games on a USA/NTSC-U Wii, you'll need to force NTSC!
Great!
Does that mean WW/VC cheat?
Nice (http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n31/Romaap/cf1a750f.jpg)
If GeckoOS could hook GC games and edit the settings/read messages it could replace the system menu. :D
Sorry for the silly question but how is supposed to work the launch channel function?
As I understand,is it possible to load Ocarina codes to Wiiware or VC games with 1.9?
Woooo, Gecko OS is getting better and better. O0
I just have one problem with this version:
If I choose "Launch Channel" I get the message: "Error Getting Channel List".
EDIT: Problem solved.

Hey,
This is great, going to test this. Finally cheating, super mario 3 ;)
I've been waiting for this.
Greatzz Nextria
I keep getting the "Error Loading Channel" when I try to cheat on Mega Man 9. What exactly am I supposed to do? Is the game supposed to be on the SD card along with the apps or does it need to be on the Wii's system memory?
Post Merge: April 27, 2009, 06:59:37 PM
Ok, I figured out the database.txt but I have no idea how it's supposed to look and how to name the games. Can anybody help me out?
I keep getting "Error Getting Channel List" when trying to launch a channel. Can someone post how to fix this?
what frimware version are you on?
I'm on 4.0, but I don't think I'm doing anything with the database right.
thats the problem how did you update?
I updated through Nintendo. Am I going to have to downgrade? If so, to what version?
Post Merge: April 27, 2009, 07:16:01 PM
Ah, I can't downgrade it. I didn't have Waninko's cIOS installed before upgrading to 4.0
So there's no way to cheat on VC/WiiWare games with my current set up?
4.0 for me too, should I downgrade?
You do not need to downgrade..
these instructions work: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=146735 (http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=146735)
these will downgrade your IOS!
Thanks Link!! as always, you're the best
Awesome, I got everything working now. Thank you, Link! ;D
One last question, is it possible to have all of my VC/WiiWare games on the same SD card as Gecko OS and other apps? Or do the games have to be on the system memory?
system memory
Two question.
1)Can it load the channels from the SD card,or is it necessary to be in the System memory?
2)Where can I find codes for Wiiware and VC games?
1) they have to be on the system memory AFAIK
2) in the WiiWare/VC codes board (http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/board,47.0.html)

lol :P
Why doesn't this work with Menu 4.0?! Gecko OS 1.8 did, but now, when I boot it through the HBC, all is see is a code stack and error stack. I don't want to downgrade my menu IOS either.
uh, is it normal that when i am trying to do the channel hack and it do like the other 1 do that is saying (error getting channel list)
and i downgrade my wii to v3.2 and it do nothing (it mean it do all the same thing as if i have v4.0 and i don't ( and omg it say that it v3.2 and it not making effect)
This version doesn't work on my Wii !! I have a black screen with : "Exception (DSI) occurred!
GPR00 00000001 ...
STACK DUMP:
80e07074 --> 80e1e2dc --> ...
Code dump:
80e07074: A01D000C ..."
But the 1.8.0.2 works !!
PS: I've last version of the Homebrew Channel
GeckoOS 1.9 has to be one of the best releases since Ocarina add-on + Ocarina with WiiWare & Virual Console games this is the best this encourages me to get a usb gecko since I have alot of Virtual Console Games!
Problem solved! Monsieur, I was getting the same error you were getting. I had the background.png file in the root at first and then I took it out and now it works! Although, when i moved background.png to the apps/gecko folder, like the changelog said, the background didn't show up. The update is worth having an ugly background, though. And if you never had a background.png file in the first place, then you're just screwed. Also, I keep getting the channel list error as well. R. H., how did you solve the problem?

Try to load it again, if you haven't already. I have had a similar message appear on some homebrew applications, but they would work fine when I tried again.
Also, thanks for yet another great release!
Are there any plans to integrate the VC/Wiiware/Channel codes to the Code Database or will the DB stay for disc-based Wii games only?
Okay, NOW, my background works. I didn't know it was supposed to go in the /data/gecko folder. I'm still getting the code list error, though.
Just out of curiosity. Since we now have channel support, would it be possible to hack the HBC itself?
Like a mulitplier to get some insane scores on the "secret" mode. MUAHAHAHAH
Then we should be able to hack "official" channels as well right? Though there would probably be some problems if we were to go online (i.e. Everybody Votes).
hi, can anyone help me please, when i load the game rygar with geko os 1.8 it goes to a black screen and says please connect a nunchuck to the wiimote but it is already connected, the nunchuck works fine was playing a wii game before that without no problems.
there must be a setting in geko os that is disabling the nunchuck, i just wish i knew which one it was.
this same bug is in geko 1.9 aswell.
copy and paste post from older version as i haven't got a reply yet, this is a very annoying bug and i want to see a fix for it please.
You need to reconnect it while GeckoOs is running. It's a bug in the development libraries. It's only possible to detect a Nunchuck being plugged in, not one already there.

what a strange bug, it's not in the older versions, will give this a try later, thanks.
it doesn't work, i still get the same error, i took out the nunchuck while in geko 1.9 main menu and then reconnect and selected launch game, no progress.

i did that while the message to reconnect nunchuck shows and nothing happens.
After copied a VC in the Wii memory,I tried to launch the channel using Gecko 1.9 but with no success.
Everytime,it keeps show me an error. What am I doing wrong? Is the loading channel function uncompatible with system menu 4.0?
yes you have got to downgrade

I see. :'(
But to what system menu version?
any really just go below 3.4
Preferrably 3.2 since you doesn't lose any more features other than the 4.0 specific stuff. 3.2 is also the easiest to get a hold of (Any Region Changer).
And regarding the nunchuck problem. I haven't tested or anything. I just know of that particular bug and took a guess.
Tried launching without and plugging in after starting GeckoOS as opposed to unplug/replug while it is running? (Another guess.)
Lastly. As I asked previuosly, would it be possible to hack the HBC and other "official" channels other than VC/WiiWare games?
you cant hack HBC but you can hack other channels like the miichannel
has anyone tried though?

Actually there is no need to downgrade your Wii menu. You only need to downgrade IOS36, which you can use IOS downgrader (not cIOS downgrader, that downgrades the Wii menu instead) to do, or you can just extract a IOS36 wad of an earlier version of IOS36 from one of your Wii discs using WUFE and then install that.
Thanks for the update

What version of IOS36 is the best to install?I think that there are 10 versions.
Also,if something goes wrong,can I uninstall the IOS36?

I use IOS36 v1042, which can be extracted from the SSBB update partition. If something goes wrong then I don't really recommend uninstalling IOS36; in general it is a bad idea to uninstall any system files on the Wii, if you need to fix them then you should reinstall them (without uninstalling them first).

still no progress, anyone help?
marble saga korporina does not load with 1.9 it stays in the geko menu and dosn't load the game.
Rygar: The Battle of Argus for the Wii asks for the nunchuk and no matter how many times to re insert it it does not load.
monster hunter 3 demo does not work in 1.07 (with reboot option) and does work with the rebooter option in 1.9.
it's a real pain having to load from 1.07 and 1.9 to load certain Wii games.

Have you tried forcing the language and video mode? Also have you tried all of the hook types? If so then I'll look into the problem to see if I can reproduce and fix it.
Quote from: jalaneme on April 30, 2009, 03:58:01 PMRygar: The Battle of Argus for the Wii asks for the nunchuk and no matter how many times to re insert it it does not load.
Odd, because Gecko completely disconnects the Wiimote when loading and it should be reconnected by the game (so Gecko should not have anything to do with whether the nunchuk works or not). Do you have any modified IOS (cIOScorp or anything like that)? Even if not you may want to try reinstalling the IOS that the game uses, because it could be a problem with the IOS. You may also want to try reconnecting the Wiimote from the home button screen (if the game lets you access it).

There is virtually no difference in how rebooter works between 1.07 and 1.8/1.9 so I'm not sure why that is the case.

yes, i have tried english and tried all video modes and tried all hook types and it still won't load, the game marble saga korporina is american and my wii is pal, i also use the exact same settings i use in 1.07 in 1.9 but it doesn't work for some reason

i've tried reconnecting the wiimote and nunchuck in the home menu, in the geko main menu, whlie it's loading the game, and while the error is on screen, also it can't be the ios because the game works fine in geko 1.7 no problem.

There is virtually no difference in how rebooter works between 1.07 and 1.8/1.9 so I'm not sure why that is the case. well when i used the rebooter in 1.07 it first didn't show any game at the disc channel and then i reloaded the rebooter again but this time it loaded with a black screen, strangely, when i load up geko 1.9 the game worked perfect straight away.
keep the message outside the quotes

Gecko OS 1.07 always uses IOS36 regardless of the game, Gecko 1.8/1.9 uses the IOS that the game requests (can be IOS36, but often isn't). Just the fact that it works correctly in Gecko OS 1.07 but not Gecko 1.8 or 1.9 actually makes it very likely to be an IOS problem.
well i have played a couple of games today via geko 1.9
no more heroes
excite truck
nights into dreams
speed racer
all games loaded fine via geko 1.9 so i definitely know for sure that it's not my wii that is the problem, it's geko 1.9 it just doesn't like rygar and marble saga korporina for some reason, it doesn't matter as i have just put 1.07 and 1.9 on my SD card so i don't have to keep taking the silly thing out, i won't hold my breath for a fix on those two games.

Gecko 1.9.0.1
What's New:
- Fixed a bug that prevented the codes and patch folder from being found if in data/gecko
- Fixed a rebooter bug that caused the currently inserted game disc not to show up in the disc channel
Where I must put my codes? Previously I put them into root folder...
There's a way, o are you working on, to reboot with 4.0?
but why does it reload the disc again after it sets up the drive. when it reloads again, my disc doesnt read

thanks in advance ;D
yes there is, but since those channels use code from Nintendo they are illegal.
So you wont see it on here.
but you can do a google search for Wadder
I have a question. The folder data/gecko must be in the root directory right? If I put a cheat file there, will my Gecko read it automatically? And if I have that cheat file there, and another Brawl file code in the "codes" folder in the root, will the data/gecko folder have priority or there would be an error?
Quote from: Unai on May 04, 2009, 05:03:25 PM

The folder data should be in the root directory and the folder gecko should be in the data directory, so if that's what you mean then you are correct.
Quote from: Unai on May 04, 2009, 05:03:25 PMIf I put a cheat file there, will my Gecko read it automatically?
The gct file needs to be in "sd:/data/gecko/codes/". If you have Ocarina on, then Gecko 1.9.0.1 will automatically check there first.

The gct file in "sd:/data/gecko/codes/" will have priority over the one in "sd:/codes/" (which will be ignored if a gct file for the game exists in "sd:/data/gecko/codes/").

you dont need an USBGecko for using codes
Thanks, but now I have a few more questions:
I get the VC list up, but when I try to play one of the WW games (Megaman 9 to be exact) It loads everything fine, but then it freezes at a black screen, and does not move. How do I get this to stop and Why is this happening?

Are you using codes with that game? If you are using codes then first try starting Megaman 9 with codes turned off, and if it works then one of the codes you are trying to use is causing the game to freeze. Also make sure the pause start option is turned off, as that would also prevent it from starting.

I think that you need to downgrade IOS36 first. If you want, read and try the following instructions...

I want to copy my animal crossing save but I can't get the remove copy flags thing to work. I'm on system menu 4 and I downgraded the IOSes. The rebooter seems to work but I still can't copy the save.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get it to work?

well i have played a couple of games today via geko 1.9
no more heroes
excite truck
nights into dreams
speed racer
all games loaded fine via geko 1.9 so i definitely know for sure that it's not my wii that is the problem, it's geko 1.9 it just doesn't like rygar and marble saga korporina for some reason, it doesn't matter as i have just put 1.07 and 1.9 on my SD card so i don't have to keep taking the silly thing out, i won't hold my breath for a fix on those two games.
Just tested Rygar on Gecko 1.9.0.1 - no issues with the nunchuk here. It uses IOS 33; try using WUFE (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/WUFE) to extract the update files from Rygar, and then install the IOS 33 wad file.

Sorry, the remove copy flags patch currently only works on Wii menu versions prior to 4.0. I may fix that eventually, but even if I don't I'm planning to add the ability to copy save data directly from NAND so that you don't even need to go through the Wii menu.

That would be awesome!
bye
Also another great addon would be Gecko os being able to read the Wiiware games from your sd card so you dont have to move them game u wanna hack to the wii channel then move it back, its not a long process really but still would be nice not having to do that
EDIT: No i didnt upgrade to 4.0 from nintendo Originally i had 3.4 then downgraded to 3.2 then upgraded using Wanikikos Firmware Updater
Hi everybody!
That's my 1st post here. Thank you brkirch for your work on Gecko! I use it to load import games. But I have a little problem with it, I'm not sure if it's a bug or if I'm doing something wrong...
I have a PAL Wii and when I want to load a US or Jap game with Gecko, the game works but I have a kind of red filter on the screen. In order to have the right colors I have to remove my RGB cable and plug my old and cheesy composite cable (yellow-red-white cinch connectors sold with the console). Same problem if I force NTSC in the options. Games don't even boot if I force PAL 50 or 60Hz.
I had the same problem with all the previous versions of Gecko.
Also, I would like to know if there's a way, with Gecko, to load Trucha signed games?
My Wii is with official firmware 4.00E so I guess not... :(
Thanks! ;)

I know it goes in the APPS folder, so I just put the Gecko1901 folder in /apps/ocarina/. Now I try putting it in the wii, boot the HBC and nothing shows up, just bubbles everywhere on the HBC screen.D:

You shouldn't put it in the /ocarina folder. Just put the Gecko1901 folder in the /apps directory. The Gecko1901 folder should contain boot.elf, icon.png and meta.xml. Then you should see Gecko appear in the HBC.
Hello.
This is a great app, but there is one problem with it.
My SSBB disc is scratched horribly, so it only boots 8% of the time.
With that, when I run SSBB from Gecko, once it finally works, it looks for cheats.
When it finds the cheats, it boots the disc a second time.
With my disc being stupid, I get a disc read error and I can't load SSBB through Gecko with the file replacement cheat.
Yeah.
will upcomming gecko contain any download and generating cheat system ?
Hey, im having this issue where when i try to start up gecko os, it gives me a "this is not a valid wii application" error.
It was working perfectly fine last night o.O but for some reason it decided to act up.
any ideas? ._.

Gecko 1.9.0.1
What's New:
- Moved rebooter to a menu item
- Fixed a bug that prevented the codes and patch folder from being found if in data/gecko
- Fixed a bug that caused a core dump if background.png is in the root directory of the SD card
- Language and video mode settings from WiiRD are now used if a game is started from WiiRD
- Fixed a rebooter bug that caused the currently inserted game disc not to show up in the disc channel
Gecko 1.9
What's New:
- Fixed a text overlapping bug that would happen if a disc error occurs and Ocarina is on
Download from:
http://www.usbgecko.com/Gecko1901.zip (http://www.usbgecko.com/Gecko1901.zip)
If you get the "Error Getting Channel List" message, check out Link's guide on how to downgrade your Wii so channel loading will work:
http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,3296.0.html (http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,3296.0.html)
Note that there should be no downsides to this downgrade because it will NOT downgrade your Wii menu; all you will lose is the restrictions in the IOS versions you have that are preventing channel loading from working. (everything else should still work as before!)

Awesome! ;D
Great work brkirch
Although, what upgrades were in..lets see...was it 1.8? Its been too long since I was here
Edit: FOUND IT
Edit: another question
by elf/dol loading do you mean Wii Homebrew or GC Homebrew?
I mean I have the SD Gecko and AR to run GC Homebrew but that would be more convenient
I'm having a bit of an odd problem here.
I downloaded Wiibrew through bannerbomb, kept the private file it gave me in my SD card, and then to execute it, I used the hackmii installer to get it downloaded on my Wii. Now I have the channel. So I took the SD card, got the Gecko 1.9.0.1 file from the HBC file and put it into my apps file. Then I inserted into my Wii again, reseted it, and homebrew remains empty...
Is there any way to get this working? All I really want to use Gecko for is for the Ocarina feature.
do you have it like this?:
SD:\apps\Gecko1901\boot.dol
SD:\apps\Gecko1901\meta.xml
SD:\apps\Gecko1901\icon.png
i tried the downgrader but it doesn't work for me

Did you follow my downgrading instructions?
Can you please check your Wii Serial Number? Is it LU64 or LU65 - download xyzzy from wiibrew.org and it'll tell you. If you have a LU64/65 Wii then you cannot install a cIOS and thus can't downgrade using cIOS - however, you should be able to manually install old IOS version from an update partition like Mario Kart Wii after you downgraded IOS35 with WMIOS35!

What's New:
- Improved Gamecube disc detection
What do you mean by "Improved GameCube Disc detection?" It looked as if it detected it as a GC disc before, but just skipped the SD Codes part.... Why's it do that anyway? Someone said it was because GC discs do something differently than Wii discs?
Quote from: Yoshi52 on May 23, 2009, 11:17:31 PMWhat do you mean by "Improved GameCube Disc detection?"
GC disc detection was not working properly for all games - for example the GC disc The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition was detected as a Wii disc, resulting in a core dump. Recently there was a Wii disc released (Monster Hunter 3-Tri demo) that was detected as a Gamecube disc, which resulted in a black screen when trying to load it with Gecko 1.9.0.1. The problem was due to the Gamecube detection being based off of the game ID; apparently whether a disc is for the Wii or Gamecube cannot be determined by the game ID alone, but rather needs to be determined by the existence of the Wii or Gamecube disc magic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_(programming)).

The problem is that switching to Gamecube mode is like a system reset; Gecko OS and anything else in memory is cleared before the loading of the Gamecube disc even starts. There are ways around that problem, but they will require system files to be modified (MIOS and possibly BC), currently it isn't as simple as just loading the GC game and applying codes to it.

Would it be possible to suppress these memory clear instructions when hooking up to bc/mios? Or are they executed on the ARM and thus out of reach for Gecko OS?

Gecko normally switches your Wii to NTSC which results in red black picture if you use import games - this is done for best possible compatibility..however, you can force PAL60 or PAL50 which works for most games (PAL60 is known to be more compatible)
Quote from: Link on May 24, 2009, 09:28:15 AMWould it be possible to suppress these memory clear instructions when hooking up to bc/mios? Or are they executed on the ARM and thus out of reach for Gecko OS?
I haven't looked into it too much yet, but it would appear that the overwrites are done by Starlet since BC is not a PPC binary (so I'm assuming it is a ARM binary, I haven't tried disassembling it yet though, I've only looked at MIOS so far). Anyway even if BC was PPC code then preventing the overwrites would only solve some of the problem; MIOS would still have to be hooked somehow, and that really can't be done without modifying it because the PPC code in MIOS is bootstrapped by ARM code :-\.
There are three possible ways that I think I might be able to get GC games hooked:
- Write an executable for BootMii that loads a custom BC/MIOS from the SD card which then starts up a GC version of Gecko OS
- Attempt to switch to GC mode without the assistance of ARM code (don't know that this is at all possible, even if it is then it may be quite buggy)
- Create and install a custom BC/MIOS either as a hidden channel or as a replacement for the existing BC/MIOS
Very nice.
i am having a minor problem being able to copy the normally protected or "No Copy" save files.
i know i had to enable the option, and select re-booter, but it did not work.
at first it was giving the error "unable to read chennel/menu" so i downgraded and now that works, but still no luck.
can anybody help me with this?

How sad, the import games I have don't launch at all if I force PAL 50 or PAL 60... :'( (No More Heroes US, Tatsunoko VS Capcom JAP, Monster Hunter G JAP). I only get a green screen and nothing more happens.
I had an old modified version of Gecko OS called "Gecko OS Color fix" that was able to launch my games without this annoying problem. Unfortunately "Gecko OS Color Fix" don't work anymore with the latest version of the Homebrew Channel. :'( Wouldn't it be possible to make a new "color fix" version from the latest version of Gecko?
By the way, I already tried some older NTSC consoles on my PAL TV and had no image problems with them. Is the video signal different on the Wii?

Seconded.. however as to my knowledge LU64+ Wiis will perform an IOS installation check and they would even not be able to manage installing the cIOS.. you might be able though to downgrade IOS35 and install IOS36 with WMIOS35 from a disc like Smash Bros on your Wii.. IOS36 is not used by the system menu so your Wii should not brick - if IOS36 games do not work you can simply "reupgrade" your Wii using regular Nintendo updates.
Hello
When i use Gecko 1.9.1 with the pal Punch Out wiird wont work.
Wiird start normaly but after the 20 seconds countdown it only says wiird and not Punch Out and game ID.
Than gecko starts Punch out and wiird says cant conect try again
Others games are no problem so far
Annybody an idee
try to start WiiRd when the game is already loaded.
Hi by any chance do you need a usb gecko to get this to work
no, you only need an USBGecko for debugging the games (making the codes).
you dont need it if you just want to use the cheats.
ah and brkirch, do that mean that the next version of gecko os will be able to hack gc game because i can't use the action replay i got to play in the wii (that can add code of course)
YAY!!!. can someone make a channel wad for this???
with these default settings:
Codes: on
hooktype: [Default]
Force NTSC
Thank you Romaap for your replay but that dind't work.
I was on version 4.0 and downgrade to version 3.3 and there is no problem loading Punch out with wiird now.
But i have another problem.
When i use launch channel it gives an error (getting list) same for rebooter and dont detect sd codes (wich is no problem becouse usb gecko wiird is working wel.
I have the same problem with my japanese console but with my US console there is no problem and everything works well both are also on 3.3.
Anny idees
I linked my Wii now to my PC monitor via component.. which only supports 480p.. the old Gecko OS (Gecko 1.8 in my test also does not) versions always used 480p if the Wii was set to it, disregarding all options. Gecko 1.9.1 disregards.. so I am asking either for an option to force 480p or go back to the old ways that 480p is forced whenever the Wii is running in 480p mode!
Thank you!

This will be fixed in whenever I next update Gecko 1.9; I almost never use my Wii in 480p mode so I never noticed - still I'm surprised that this problem went unreported until now.
btw brkirch, what will there be in the next version of gecko os, will there be game cube game hackable with it because now the wad channel of action replay is not working anymore (because of wii v4.0 of course)
I have some (annoying) questions:
1. Why does Gecko OS still not contain video mode patches?
I know they do not work all the time, but they are really helpful for people with NTSC Wiis and PAL games, or people with PAL Wii + rgb cable and NTSC games. Since official wii software and libogc use the same video mode objects(in libgoc GXRModeObj), it's pretty easy to patch video modes. Just search NTSC480i for example in the main.dol and replace it with PAL480i. Some of the so-called warez loaders do this and works very well for most games that can't be forced to specifc video modes.
2. Why is loading codes from usb code not implemented?
I know there's a bug in libogc that prevents that usb storage is shutdown, with the result that usb storage can only be used until the next IOS Reload. But until then it works fine and i made a Gecko OS mod that loads codes from usb. (Everybody interested just needs to look at WiiBrew, i did not test it, i don't cheat in games, but it should work)
3. Why is downgrading IOS36(i guess a trucha capable IOS36) required for launching/cheating in channels?
When launching discs, the main.dol of the games can be patched on-the-fly without the need of trucha support inside the IOS. Why is it needed for channels?
And something about downgrade/LU64+:
On LU64+ Wiis it seems it's not the installation that is prevented, it's the execution of (some of) old IOS that does not work. Downgrading IOS35 results in an unusable IOS35 on these Wiis. The IOS that are not splitted into several modules, like IOS15, seem not to be affected as pirates can install and use IOS16 on LU64+ Wiis with 3.4 system menu.
1st post on page 1 of this thread?
I can't get WiiRD to connect to the newest Gecko OS, it starts off the 20 sec counter before launching the game but afterwards i just get a "confirm" window up asking me to try again (I cannot provide the exact error right now) In the command window its an overflow with reconnecting messages.
Well i know i shouldn't have made a replay before i had all the information but has anyone else had a similar problem? I can edit in exact errors later if it can nessecarily help.

Hello Guys.
After I have followed Links guide to solve the "Error getting channel list", my original Pikmin 2 disc tells me that it requires a system update.
I don't know if I could accept this update, because I don't want to brick my Wii or get the "Error getting channel list" again.
I have a PAL Wii with System Menu 4.0 and the Homebrew channel shows that IOS61 is installed.
Any idea how to solve this problem? I don't like to install preloader or any other boot/system menu modification. I just want to start gecko os using the homebrew channel to cheat on some channels, all my other Wii functions should work as they are designed by BigN.
Many thanks and greeeting to all Wii homebrew programmers.

Sorry.. to use an old IOS36 which allows channel hooking and playing new games using the disc channel you will need to use Preloader to disable game updates.. Pikmin has a new IOS36 which is non vulnerable and won't allow channel cheating.. Pikmin 2 detects that and will try to update your Wii to replace it.. either start Pikmin 2 via Gecko OS.. or use Preloader.

do you think that metroid prime trilogy will be like that too
This is a cool update

You can expect all First-Party Nintendo games to always ship with very recent (currently 3.4 or 4.0 - however, i guess 4.0 as of now) updates. So yes: Metroid Prime trilogy will most likely contain 4.0 - and would want to update all old IOS files even if it wouldn't update your system menu!

Sorry.. to use an old IOS36 which allows channel hooking and playing new games using the disc channel you will need to use Preloader to disable game updates.. Pikmin has a new IOS36 which is non vulnerable and won't allow channel cheating.. Pikmin 2 detects that and will try to update your Wii to replace it.. either start Pikmin 2 via Gecko OS.. or use Preloader.
Thank you for your quick answer.
Regarding to this answer, I have some more questions.
1. If I decide to stop channel hooking, could I simply install the update from the pikmin 2 disc and everything except channel hooking will work again as designed by BigN
2. If I decide to continue channel hooking, does anyone have installation instructions for preloader that are brick safe.
I did not find any installation instructions that I would trust, especially since I found an article that you NEVER should patch an IOS which is used by the currently installed system menu.
3. What if I have installed preloader and BigN releases an update for its IOS versions or system menu. Will I be able to install these updates via WiiConnect24 or disc update or will this brick my Wii.
Thanks again.

1. It should, yes!
2. The basic preloader installation is VERY safe. However, if you have an old Wii you can additionally install BootMii - BootMii is a preloader of the Wii initialization and thus completely IOS independent. If you use BootMii, create a backup of your NAND flash and then you can literally DO EVERYTHING WITHOUT RISK.. if you brick your menu.. recover it with BootMii - you can even safely patch IOS60 (System menu IOS) which Preloader setup will do automatically.
3. If you use preloader and Nintendo releases an update.. you can update your Wii using WC24 - BootMii should not be affected by this (though noone knows), Preloader will be removed though. Getting updated Sysmenus via discs will not work as Preloader blocks disc updates (after all this is one of Preloader's purposes!)
this might be the dumest question asked trew here and i really do think so...but hey i don't know so of course i gotta ask to know
How do you get the gecko 1.9.1?
i mean do you dowload it using wii internet? or do you buy at a gamstop or something?
the rest about the gecko 1.9.1 i mostly understand....but not how to get it.
That's my only question, if anyone can reply thanks, if not.....i'll just keep it to myself, i won't waste my time typing things you guys will probably not care for.
Gecko 1.9.1 is free software, you do not have to buy it.
In order to run it, you need a method to run homebrew on the Wii console. The three main methods of running homebrew are the following...
Twilight Hack (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_Hack) - requires Twilight Princess, and no longer works on the 4.0 firmware (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/System_Menu_4.0), but should on all others.
Bannerbomb (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Bannerbomb) - should work on all firmware versions. It is sometimes more buggy than the Twilight Hack at running homebrew applications. Requires an SD card.
Homebrew Channel (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_Channel) - the latest version will install on all firmwares. You will need to use either the Twilight Hack or Bannerbomb in order to install it on your Wii console. Probably the most convenient way of running homebrew on the Wii console. Also, with BootMii (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii), you can automatically boot to it, and skip right over the System Menu. BootMii is not required to run this.
EDIT: Currently, BootMii can only do this if you have it installed as boot2. Newer Wii consoles cannot install it as boot2, and can only install as an IOS.
You can download Gecko 1.9.1 from the following link...
http://home.comcast.net/~brkirch/Gecko191.zip (http://home.comcast.net/~brkirch/Gecko191.zip)
Sorry since I asked about this in another thread, but how does Gecko 1.8+ load and execute SD codes from custom addresses? Anything I put in a high memory space seems to be cleared when the game initializes? I'd love to figure this out.
Will a future update allow loading a channel from the SD card for 4.0 users?
Sorry if this is a minor bump, I'd just like to say that this recent release of Gecko is great but I am getting the "Error Loading Channel List" message. I've read other people's situations but this is my system info. My IOS35 downgraded and I installed the trucha-patched version of it, but I'm not sure why I'm getting the "Error Loading Channel List" message. This is what was done to my Wii in order..
Wii System Info - LU57 (Launch Day) - USA/NTSC 4.0U - Installed HBC 1.0.3. and DVDx through BannerBomb- Downgraded IOS35 - Installed IOS35.wad (trucha-bugged) - Installed CIOSv7.wad - Patched IOS60 - Upgraded to CIOS36rev10 by .dol
It's too late to start from the beginning to use a whole softmod guide from start to finish, so can someone tell me what I need to do in order to get Channel Loading to work?
Thanks a lot for your time and help.

IOS35 downgrade does not help Gecko OS, it runs off IOS36. Also the IOS35 downgrade does not work on boot2v4 Wiis, as well as the IOS36v1042 does not work, so i suggest everybody to use something else, like my Trucha Bug Restorer.
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=165453 (http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=165453)
(and yes the IOS15 downgrade is confirmed to work on boot2v4 Wiis)
All versions of Gecko OS 1.8 and above, don't use IOS 36, it uses the correct IOS off the Game which is searches for in the Game TMD. This is why versions < 1.8 had some incompatibility problems as it did use 36 back then.

So you're saying I need to use the trucha-bug restorer to get Gecko Channel Loading to work on my (launch day) 4.0 Wii? Will this mess with anything, and will my IOS35 still be downgraded? I'm putting my Wii System Info in my sig for reference.

I know about the IOS Reload it does. But which IOS needs the trucha bug in order to use debugging and ocarina in channels? I thought it does everything that needs trucha with IOS36, and then loads the correct IOS.

I would also like to know this so I can get my Channel Loading to work on 4.0. And is it possible to have both your IOS35 and IOS36 trucha-patched without any hassle?
Channel loading requires title identification, i.e ES_identify() which is an IOS func that must be patched on new wii's, so you can't do the identification. You need higher privileges to access system files like TMD and that, and its probably what its trying to do and failing.
I know there has been patches for ES_identify, and I'm 100% sure svpe released one.
i haven't kept up to date with these patches, tools and exploits though, so i can't really give advice on how to patch as if i give wrong advice and your Wii bricks i'd feel pretty shitty.

Oh okay, thanks for the consideration. I have a launch day Wii that bricked from a flash memory problem, it was fixed by Nintendo. I was able to downgrade my IOS35 and install a trucha-patched one, install the patched IOS60, and CIOS36rev10. If I can recall, when I was using bannerbomb, it said BootMii was able to be installed too. I've also had a few GBAtemp ppl tell me that my Wii was not "LU64'ified" so I guess I'm all good.
I just don't know why it won't show up if my Wii is the same as it's launch-day form.

If you can install BootMii as boot2, that would offer protection from various forms of bricks. At this point, maybe you could try some of those ES patches.

Now to the issue at hand...
So I load up the software with cheats to Animal Crossing City Folk. Everything works great except 1 thing, I cannot use my wifi abilities. Whether I try to leave my town or invite guests I get the same error from Nintendo WFC (error code 61020. Is this something that can be patched or fixed? A useful response will be greatly appreciated.

Could someone explain how Gecko installs game disc update IOS (example: games that require an update in this disc channel to load). Do you just start it up for the first time and it will install it or something?
Gecko doesn't install it, it skips over it! :D
With the option remove copy flags does that mean that you can copy over protected save data would like some help as to how i use this option as i would like to back up my own data to a sd card dat.bin format.Would like a quick reply from anyone if possible
Gecko 1.9.2 has been released, check the first post for details.
If you notice Gecko 1.9.2 taking longer to display the main menu than before it probably has to do with switching to cIOS for channel loading. There are some newer cIOS that are based off of IOS 38 that have a ES_DIVerify that is a bit buggy (doesn't usually work more than once without having to reload the IOS). If Gecko 1.9.2 detects that the workaround required for this problem is needed, you may notice a small delay during the startup of Gecko 1.9.2 because the channel list needs to be generated before the main menu is displayed.
I hate the fact that I am at my parents now and not have my Wii in near.. great work.. gonna test this evening! Thanks, brkirch!
I have noticed in gecko 1.9.2 the remove copy flags option has gone any reason for this.
Hey I'm having problems over here
I got gecko 1.9.2 and the needed ios55 for the latest mh3 though it keeps telling me there is no dvd even though I'm forcing it to ntsc. Did I skip a step why it's telling me this, cause I've heard and seen people play it?
Gecko OS 1.9.2 is very convenient for people who get the "Error Loading Channel List" message. I had to trucha-patch and ES_identify patch my IOS36 for Channel Loading to work.
Channel Loading will still work fine if I have both CIOS36rev10 installed and trucha/ES_identify patched IOS36 right?
Nevermind that above post^

Why does Gecko OS use a cIOS but not use it? All cIOS have patched nand permissions, which means you can just read/write all files on nand without the hassle with ES_Idenitfy. If that would be consequently be used, Gecko OS would only need 2 IOS Reloads and one ES_Identify, no matter whatever is done.

The code to use ES_Identify to load the channel list was originally designed for IOS 36, but it
should have worked unmodified with IOS 249. When it did not I checked what was broken; it turned out that ES_Identify was failing after the first identify, so I reset the IOS before each identify to remedy the problem. While I could have experimented with cIOS and found that identify wasn't necessary for NAND permissions, it still doesn't solve the problem for other patched IOS (like IOS 36 patched with Dop-IOS (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Dop-IOS)) and the only real benefit to not using identify is the channel list being generated when going to the channel menu instead of at startup (so it doesn't really matter anyway). It is unlikely I will be changing the code now because there actually are cIOS that do not have the NAND permissions patched (rare but they do exist), and there is no need to fix something that is not broken.
@bkrich: That 1.9.2 build you linked me to works great, just as good as Gecko 1.9.1 and fixed the disc twice-start up problem.
Here's my situation that I had. I was using Gecko 1.9.1 and kept getting the "Error Loading Channel List" message. So I used the Trucha Bug Restorer to patch my IOS36 and it worked like a charm. (Also allowed me to use StartPatch).
Channels would show up on the list then. So it was all good. I had and still have CIOS36rev10 at that time and now.
I wish the revision for channel loading via CIOS came out sooner tho xD. But I needed my IOS36 patched for StartPatch to be used anyways.
thank you :D
can someone explain the different hooks please - have no clue what the ones with ? are used for
no hooks = off
default = ?
VBI = wii remote
wii pad = classic controler
gc pad = game cube controller
gxdraw = ?
gxflush = ?
ossleepthread = ?
axnextframe = ?
load debugger = for wiird & usb gecko
----------
add comments - or corrections
They doesn't really have anything to do with the controller. They're just different ways of hooking the game.
As for the technical differences between them, I believe that has not been made public yet, correct?
SSBB still dont work for me so maybe its my wii itself there are no scratches on the game either

Cheers.

It seems to be working.
Do I have to let the SD card plugged?
Is there a quicker way to get the game ready?
Are all games compatible?
You could install a Gecko channel, but then you have to search google for "Gecko 1.9.2 wad" and do some research on how to install them (with wadmanager).
I can't give you direct links because those "custom channels" were using Nintendo code so they were illegal, but I think it was fixed now. But I just want to play safe ;)
And all games should be compatible.

its because of using newer version of cIOSCORP that patch all the IOS's to use 249. You just need a IOS 36 with trucha bug enabled (no cIOS)

I think it's because Gecko OS 1.9.2 started to use IOS249 and disables the rebooter when using that, because of the ES_Identify bug. But there's a workaround for that bug in the svn version.
cioscorp does not patch IOSes to use IOS249(whatever that should mean). It patches and replaces ALL nintendo IOS. And for the rebooter you need an IOS with ES_Idenitfy bug, it should work even without trucha bug. If you have IOS249, that needs to have the ES_Idenitfy bug, if you don't have IOS249, then IOS36 has to have it.

Channel launching only works if Gecko can use IOS249 or and old IOS36. You can get an old IOS36 with DopIOS! However, your Wii will most likely update it with new games!
still getting error 002 with r12 when i run contra rebirth. I give up.
Gecko OS can't pause correctly Drift Mania (PAL). When I un-pause the game it will freeze or it will un-pause the game not at the last screenshot. I think it's because Drift Mania uses 'time base' instruction (mftb/mfbtu). Is there a way to pause/un-pause timer?
i keep getting errors it doesnt work for me
What's meant by cIOS? What's a No Hook option? I'm just looking to do 2 things.
Use cheat codes (like Action Replay)
and
Boot foreign region games (like Free Loader did with Game Cube)
I'm surprised this software seems so technical.

Where can I get the text file that has lots of codes for most Wii games (especially Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart)?
If you look at the top of your browser page, you should see a list of links and such, including one called Code Database. I think it's pretty obvious what it does, but if it isn't, it's the link to the section with the codes.
Okay sorry that I'm late and all, but I've been trying to use gecko 1.9.2
and it works just fine on normal wii games. My problem is that it keeps freezing when
I try to load a wii ware/Vc game, can anyone help me out?
OH if you need info, my wii is on 4.0U.
If this is the problem does it means that I have to downgrade my wii? :-\
Umm hey I have a problem..
when i start gecko, it doesn't give me a channel option.
like it only gives me load disc, options and exit
how do i fix this?

You can look for Trucha Bug Restorer mod or TBR 1.1(as soon as i release that). The updated TBR should allow you to get the IOS36 you want.

Does the game boot normally?
Yes it boots normally, all my games boot fine with or without gecko.
only reason i use gecko is for cheats, the only game that refuses to load is SSBB with gecko.
Hi, I was to late for reading Not to update to 4.2....
Damage has already been done. .
So I've system V4.2 and would like to run New Super Mario Bros.
I installed HBC 0.6 and the Gecko Os 1.9.2 and the 1.9.3.
in both os's after booting the game I get a green screen and the console reboots itself. .
Does anyone has any new ideas?
Greetz EcProCds
That's a known issue with backups. Since backups are not supported in this forum, you won't get help with it. Yes known issue even with a new/better modchip or latest "softmod".
Hello,
Can anyone help me with something?
I want to have cheats for my virtual console games, however, when I opened Geoko, (I have 1.9.3) it doesn't display an option to launch channels, only Wii games.
My Wii version is 4.1U.
Can anyone help? Thanks!
You need a patched IOS36. An old IOS36 works for channel launching as well, but it does not work on new Wiis.
Look for Trucha Bug Restorer 1.11.

Where can I find those?
You can find those here (http://tinyurl.com/yebu6cx).
Is there a stable source for Gecko 1.9.3? The one in the repository gives errors no matter what, and I'm trying to modify Gecko OS for a project called the Brawl Mod Launcher which can load a GCT based off of what the option picked is ("Launch vBrawl" => RSBE01.gct, "Launch Brawl+" => BRAWLP.gct, etc.) I don't want to use the Gecko 1.9.2 source since it always gives a DSI error even unedited.
Do you have the correct versions of the libraries?
Which libraries are those?
I'm running XP with devkitpro r17 if it's of any help.
I'm not sure, but the makefile of Gecko says:
LIBS := -lpng -lz -lfat -lwiiuse -lbte -logc -lm
I don't know which libraries those are, and if they are already included with devkitPro.
If a libary was missing, you would get errors during compiling. Gecko OS uses some code that code dumps on the latest libogc/devkitPPC(don't know which one is the "bad" one) and i think even the official release does not work properly, at least for some people. Ask Brawl+ players.
On top of that, the latest libogc(when i looked) used "new" IOS loading code, that code dumps 1/3 of the time for me.

So, it's basically no use compiling a new one then (even if a modification) because it'll give code dumps? Would've thought it'd be worth a shot -- I thought the 1.9.2 code dumps were ES_Identify errors...
If it's of any help, here's the error...straight from the repository:

That's a compiling error. You need to replace Vector by guVector, it was renamed in libogc to match the naming scheme of the other stuff.
When you fixed this, just try it. If it code dumps on some games when trying to use cheats, you are getting the result i was talking about.

Still wrong. You don't "update IOS15 to IOS36". IOS15 and IOS36 are 2 different IOS that are installed on your Wii, at the same time(!).
But to answer the question you should ask: Yes you can restore your IOS15 and IOS36 to the state they were in before using TBR. You can even do that with TBR.
Is there a wad of this I could install as a Channel?
It would be pretty helpful since when I mod someone elses Wii, I usually take off the HBC, as people can do some pretty silly things given the right tools.
I'd recommend using Google. We dont support Wads here.
just downloaded this.
finally figured out how to install HBC
nowwww, just how to i make it work with HBC XD
Gecko 1.9.3.1 has been released, it is an update to fix the Gecko Pause Start option.
Thanks brkirch
I guess there isn't much else to be done with gecko os now is there?
I think it's still not Sam & Max compatible, has no video mode patches and no Country String patching(required for japanese Wii with US Punch Out for example). These are the first things that come to my mind that are very possible and not done.
Also channel loading from SD
Thanks brkirch. I hope this doesn't die now that it's reaching perfection :(

I have downloaded version 1.9.3.1 but when i put it on my SD card it says gecko os 1.9.2 in homebrew so i dont know if

OK, figured out what happened here. My Wii doesn't even SPIN Brawl anymore until after an hour of trying again. But the part with Gecko OS crashing after 14 retries is still a problem. It just hangs on the 15th try at booting a disc.
Is it safe to download 1.9.3 and use the channel forwarder for it? Or is there a channel forwarder for 1.9.3.1 and I don't know about it?

Wiibrew (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Gecko_os)
it should work.
Wiibrew does not work (unfortunately).. I added a mirror for some USB Gecko project files (basically those files which were not solely developed by Nuke):
http://wiird.l0nk.org/projectfiles/
Gecko1931.zip is among them!
Sorry for the inconvenience.. Nuke's quick decision kinda hit both brkirch and me :(
After many forum users had reported that cheats for N64 games are not working, forum member Franky D just figured out that cheating on VC games via Gecko is only possible if the Wii System Menu is set to "English" in the Wii Language Settings.
Would it be possible to fix this in the next Gecko version, so cheating is working on other menu languages as well?
I've got a small request for the development of GeckOS.
Would it be possible to implement the ability to decode the binary digits of a byte and read/write them?
What I mean is that, obviously, a byte is made up of 8bits (e.g. 00100110) and this would represent 66 in HEX and 102 in DECIMAL. What I think would be an excellent addition would be the ability to modify read/write a binary digit DIRECTLY without having use HEX.
This function is available in CheatEngine and I use it often. Off the top of my head a game that uses binary digits is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The map, compass and Key in dungeons and the swords, shields, boots, etc in your inventory use binary for a True or False purpose. Basically boolean (Do you have the item/do you not have the item....)
This isn't an absolutley important requirement since if you need to modify a digit (e.g 0000[1]000) you can just add or subtract the hexidecimal value that this digit represents.
Just throwing this out there for if you awesome guys are looking for something to include in later releases :D
I'm not entirely sure what you mean.
If you mean modifying through WiiRD/Gecko dNET then it wouldn't help to change Gecko.
The changes should be done to the pc application, not Gecko.
QuoteThis isn't an absolutley important requirement since if you need to modify a digit (e.g 0000[1]000) you can just add or subtract the hexidecimal value that this digit represents.
A better solution to this would be to OR it. ;)
Quote from: Dude on March 11, 2010, 05:36:42 PM
What I think would be an excellent addition would be the ability to modify read/write a binary digit DIRECTLY without having use HEX.
As Romaap mentioned, you want to use a logical OR. This is like a "reverse bitmask"; when we want to isolate bits for analysis, we clear all the other bits using AND. When you want to set a bit, you use OR to set the bits you want.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mask_(computing)#Masking_bits_to_1
We usually represent AND with & or && and OR with | or ||, but there are other symbols sometimes.
Let's say you started with 01000, and you wanted to set bit 1 (that is, 01010; bit 0 is the least significant bit). OR with a value that is composed of the bits you want set.
01000 |
00010 =
01010
In fact, if you look at the disassembly near where a "flag" is being set (i.e. set the flag which indicates the player has the dungeon map), you'll see that they're using the instruction ori = OR with Immediate. The Immediate is almost always a power of 2 (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, etc), which in binary always looks like 0001, 0010, 0100, 1000, etc.
If you don't want to use Assembly, you can use a Gecko register instead. See the 0x86 codetype.
I'm gonna have to check the assembly for that now :D
I didn't realise that you could simply use logical commands - I was performing math (initially) and found a function in CheatEngine that "decodes" the bit and enables you to write it :p
I just naturally assumed that a modification to GeckOS would be needed and new code-types created in addition to updates on the PC side lol excuse my n00bness.
So, assuming that this sort of ability has enough demand enough to include it, it would be possible to include this ability in WiiRD/Gecko.net? - If you agree then I'll post this in the request/develpoment thread for discussion :)
Thanks for feedback on using logical commands for accessing the required bit though, guys :D

i know im the newbie of the year :( :'(
USB gecko is a device that you buy of course and you insert it into the second slot of your game cube slot and you plug it into your computer. USB gecko is used by all the hackers on this form and it is used to create codes for the wii
I have wii version 4.2u (unfortunately) My lovely parents updated it on me.. UGH! But anyways... I have been trying to hack for a year now. At first people didn't have a way to get the HBC on version 4.2u.. BUT finally it has happened. I have put the HBC on my wii finally. I got it from a video off of youtube and the zipped file came with codemgr (code manager), HBC browser, Gecko os, and I downloaded ocarina also.. but when I try to run either gecko the screen goes black and ocarina needs the boot.elf file to be changed to boot.dol..... And I don't know how to change the file without it effecting how the program works! PLEASE HELP ME!!! ??? :'(
I suggest making sure you're using the Gecko OS from the first page. Also, to make it easier to put things on and off the SD Card, I suggest using FTPii and a Windows FTP client like FileZilla. Then you can send new files to the Wii over wifi.
I think you can rename .dol to be .elf and vice versa. I thought HBC could support either one...I could be wrong.
@ dcx2: Ocarina was made when the .elf files created by that DevKit thing were broken, so everyone needed a elf. to .dol converter. But that's been fixed, so it's not a problem now.
To both of you, Ocarina was Gecko OS without its extra features, it was just the cheat engine of the old Gecko. So it's better to use Gecko OS since it has more features and has an updated cheat engine.
As for Gecko OS going black, it may depend on the codes you have on for the game...
I am having a problem with Eternal Darkness, it loads up the Edgar Allan Poe quote but then freezes with a message about there being a problem and that I should turn off the gamecube and check the instruction instruction manual.
Ok, so I was trying to boot up Kirby 64 with some codes, but when I loaded up Gecko OS, all it had was "Load game", but not the "Load channel" and stuff.
It used to be there before, I don't know what happened... Any help?
Thats because you updated, to get the "Load Channel" back, you have to patch your IOS36.
You can do this with Trucha Bug Restorer.
Did you guys ever address the problem where on the 15th attempt at booting a disc, the text disappears and hangs there? I guess not. Well, yeah, that happens. If you wanna test it, keep trying to Launch Disc without a disc inserted. On the 15th try, you should see Gecko hang.
I guess after about 10 times the user will finally realize he/she should insert a disc.

Yeah, but I have a weird Wii. It refuses to spin any disc with an ID of RSBE01. Except maybe after an hour of retries. So having Gecko OS not hang after 14 retries would really speed things up... a little.
I laughed hard when I thought you were just joking, but now.. hahhahahahahahahaha You poor bastid. lol
Got a lot of smoke in your house? They said it builds on the Wii's laser and dual layered discs are the first to go..

There's only one smoker in the house and that's only in the living room. I had something
similar happen to my GameCube, but that was temporary and seemed to have something to do with the AR Max. But I had the Wii much longer than l had Brawl. Smoke couldn't be it... Right?
It doesn't bother the disc so much, just the laser that reads the disk. Obviously I don't _know_ that that's the problem. Just sounds like it might be (if the Wii's in the living room).
just a quick question
i have a firmware 4.0U on the wii and i'm wondering what do i need to do in order to get the reboot feature back in gecko os.do i have to downgrade or install some IOS or something in that area?any help please?if there is some risk, i have bootmii installed as boot2(which is the one that goe straight to bootmii when you turn it on) so i should be safe right?
-thanks in advance
You have to patch IOS36 if I remember correctly.
And yes, you should be safe with BootMii installed as Boot2.
I keep hearing that VC and wiiware cheating have been fixed, i have the most recent gecko. why don't i have the option to do the channels. i have firmware 4.2u. do i have to get a different version of gecko to cheat on vc. do i still need to downgrade to cheat on vc.
If you had looked through this topic, you would have seen (numerous times) that in order to launch channels with cheats you first need to patch IOS36.
how do i do this. i'm not good with hacking.
All these features and abilities of Gecko are nice and all, but it does nothing if you can't install it, which is my problem. I've been using Ocarina (all I want to do is cheat; hacking/coding are beyond my abilities), but I've started running into games that won't work with Ocarina. The entire reason I started using Ocarina over Gecko in the first place was that I couldn't find any clear installation instructions. Now it seems I -have- to have Gecko and I have zero clue what to do with it. The few "instructions" I've found on how to install it have been horribly unclear and full of jargon that honestly makes my head hurt, and something else references Chain Loader which, when I try to Google it, gives me results on chain mail armor in World Of Warcraft. I would have thought that installation instructions would have come in the zip file, but if there are any I can't find them. This is frustrating me to the point where I can barely even think straight; I don't want to just try random ways of getting it to work because I don't know how the Wii's software/firmware works and I could easily screw something up. Help, -any- help, is appreciated.

Umm, Gecko should install exactly the same as Ocarina. All Homebrew Channel apps install the same way, by being copied into the apps folder on your SD card.
....That simple? All that stuff about Chain Loader and IOS and what-have-you stuff I've never heard of before, and it was just a matter of putting it into the SD card to run through HBC? I was under the impression that it worked as its own channel SEPARATE from the HBC.
Uh...I have no idea what this chain loader stuff is. You probably don't need to mess with IOS, especially if you've already got HBC. I think what you were reading about was a "forwarder" which puts a channel on the System Menu.
biolizard is right, just drop Gecko OS into the apps folder. HBC will see it.
Thanks, guys. Works fine now.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there any way to load up channels (virtual console/wiiware games) stored on the sd card menu with codes applied? I'm just curious because I have little memory space left on the wii and it gets annoying constantly transferring the games between the wii and the card. Thanks in advance.
I could be wrong, but I believe that the channel needs to be on your Wii console.
where/how exactly can one get IOS36 and how would one install it?
and another thing.....as of now, gecko doesn't work with GCN games(right?).....if anyone here knows.....is it being developed?.....if not,is there an app for using codes on GCN games??(a long time ago i heard of gecko 2.0 being coded)
-thanks in advance
You can download IOS36 with NUS Downloader, and then install it with WAD Manager. Note that your Wii has an IOS36 already if it has system menu 3.2 or higher.
Gecko OS mod(found in this forum) allows to use Ocarina codes on GC games, but it's not working on all games, some games have issues(Wind Waker freezes on mini map) and games with multiple .dol or .elf files are all not compatible.
If channel loading is a big deal to anyone else out there like me, here's another way of getting it going:
Requirements for channel loading in Gecko OS:
IOS 36 with Trucha (fakesigning) enabled.
That's it, but what's the best way to go about it?
If you are on 4.3 (or 4.3 with the new IOS), go to http://code.google.com/p/dop-mii/downloads/list (http://code.google.com/p/dop-mii/downloads/list) and use this to try and install a version of IOS 36 with Trucha enabled. If this doesn't work, install System Menu 4.2 or older, then try again to install an IOS 36 with Trucha enabled. This way you don't have to deal with NUS directly in a more user-friendly atmosphere, while also avoiding WAD Manager if you're against that kind of thing.
The IOS you get from DOP-Mii v13 will not be the newest version on the servers, but this should work well enough until a better workaround is applied.
Personal note: Gecko OS is the only reason I still have trucha enabled IOS anyway, and I can't wait until Gecko OS is updated so as to not need it anymore. I hope it can happen.
Edit: strikethrough for correction from Wiipower
What? The system menu doesn't have anything to do with it. The latest Gecko OS will require you to have an IOS36 that allows using ES_Identify(ES_DiVerify), or else it can't load channels. Maybe it also requires patched nand permissions, well at least it doesn't harm to have them patched as well. The trucha bug(or an IOS that ignores signatures) actually shouldn't be required to launch correctly signed(=legal!) channels. But i don't know how Gecko OS does its file access in detail, so it might use a patched system menu tmd/tik, which again means it requires an IOS that accepts turcha signed stuff.
So if you have an IOS36 with patched signature checking, patched ES_Identify and patched nand permissions, your Gecko OS should be able to launch channels with Ocarina, and the system menu doesn't matter at all.
I have 1 game that Gecko 1.9.3.1 is saying "this game requires IOS 21, IOS not found on disk"
You guys know how to fix this?

This only happens if you use a modchip and you did patch the disc. If you wouldn't have a chip and you were using a retail disc, the problem wouldn't occur, so i don't know if you are getting help here.
Can anyone tell me how to launch wii channels through Gecko OS :s I've been dying to try some virtual consol/wiware codes :3
NONONO!! Don't follow that quote. Downgrading is deprecated and unnecessary! Use the Simple IOS Patcher.

Sorry this is a dumb question but will there ever be a new gecko os after 1.9.3.1
Because with some problems with the black ops mic interfering with gecko I would have thought that they would make another one, pm me this answer please
Anyone know how to upload this onto the wii?
It would be nice not having to remember the SD card everytime I want to run other region games.
QuoteAdd support for System Menu 4.2
Does this mean 4.3 would not work? I really, really want to install a code from this thread (http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,7134.0.html) so I can play DKCR with Classic Controller support but I installed 4.3 way before I decided to homebrew my console. What should I do?
I am really new to the modding thing, so far i have had great success. There is just one problem; I cant cheat or patch GC games! VC and WiiWare works fine, Wii games work fine. Here is my set up.
US NTSC Wii OS 4.3
Gecko 1.9.3.1 (I do not have USB Gecko) I also have Gecko OS mod .93
a patched IOS36
The most recent HomeBrew
I used the smash Bros. Hack
Accio Hacks
I can provide any other information you need but I think this covers it. I really want to be able to run my GC games through Gecko.
I can be reached here or by email:
[email protected] I would really like to know what Im missing.
I have Gecko OS mod .93 What i need is a "how to use" because it loads the games and says it applys the code but the effects arent there. I tried using the rebooter since it seems to load the games in both versions i have of gecko, no dice, it just reboots my system.
alright a few questions on these steps to make sure I got this right:
1: is the patched IOS36 I got from the NUS downloader the same as IOS236
2: I have this so im good here
3: is this the mios v4 available from NUS
4: where can I find this
5: is this part of the cMIOS
6: Is this the same IOS I downloaded in the first step
i dont know where to download any of those to test
Nice stuff
Which games are not compatible with Gecko OS mod? I know some wii titles are not compatible, like Monster Hunter Tri, because they require certain modules only present in certain IOS, in this case IOS37 or IOS56.
If there is a retail GC game that doesn't work with Gecko OS mod, then please tell me. Oh, you might need to disable Ocarina+debugger for some games, like Pokemon Box.

1. You don't get patched IOS with the NUS downloader. You use the NUS downloader in lots of guides, because lots of IOS/MIOS/whatever patchers need a clean IOS/MIOS which will be patched with the desired patches. They could read the IOS/MIOS from nand(the installed IOS/MIOS), but if you have a patched one already, it's only going to cause trouble. And then the patchers would have to check the IOS from nand and so on. It's just annoying, and taking IOS wads that are downloaded with NUS downloader is a quick and clean way to guarantee you get the cIOS/cMIOS you want.
3. Yes it is.
4. NUS downloader, should be listed under system titles. If you don't find it, check "IOS256" or "IOS257" (title ids 0x00000100000100 and 0x00000100000101), one of them is BC, the other is MIOS, i always forget which one is which.
5. Yes, the cMIOS is >90% identical with the MIOS, just with some patches and the ability to load GC homebrew instead of launching the inserted GC disc. Oh and installed MIOS/cMIOS always overwrite each other, while you can choose in which "slot" you want to install IOS/cIOS.(or the installer chooses for you)
