Gecko 1.8.0.2
---------
What's New:
- GC memory card crash fixed thanks to Nuke
- A core dump that occurs on some Wiis when launching certain games should no longer occur
- Fixed codeliststart for gameconfig.txt
- A minor Ocarina fix to ensure ASM insert codes will work properly
- Exit no longer causes a core dump if Gecko was launched by a loader that lacks return to loader functionality (such as preloader); instead exit returns to the Homebrew Channel, or resets the Wii if the Homebrew Channel is not installed
Gecko 1.8
---------
What's New:
- Multidol games work through Gecko's game loader, rebooter is no longer required for them
- To ensure games are fully functional the game loader now uses the IOS requested by the game (as a result there is no 002 error, that error is due to game loaders booting a game with the wrong IOS)
- If a game requests an IOS that you don't have, the game's update partition will be searched for the IOS and the option to install the IOS will be given if it is found (if you have a modchip, turn off update blocking!)
- It is now possible to select not to load the debugger, which increases the number of code lines allowed by Ocarina
- New hooks have been added so that most (if not all) Wii games can be hooked
- Rebooter will use the hook selected on the config menu to hook games
- Rebooter is now compatible with preloader
- The menu interface has been improved, and you can load a custom background by creating a 640x480 PNG-24 file, naming it background.png, and putting it at the root of your SD card
- The menu configuration can be saved, and the saved configuration will be loaded automatically when Gecko starts
- A configuration file can be created for game specific settings like hook type
- New code types are supported by the code handler
- GPF (gecko patch file) support

O0 Very nice to see an update. Thank you for your contribution to the gecko, I do appreciate it just like many others :)
Thank you very much for the work that you put into this! It is very much appreciated.
Hate to nitpick, but would it be possible to try to load a game with the newest installed IOS, instead of requiring you to install the IOS that the game "requires". For example, on this version, I cannot play Mario Kart Wii without IOS36. However, 1.07b will load it perfectly.
It's just a minor suggestion, and once again, thanks for the work that you and everyone else involved have put into this!
any chance to run the rebooter under 3.3, 3,4, 4,0?
QuoteRebooter now works on 3.3v2, 3.4, and 4.0 (just patch IOS 36 for safety)
Bye
Hi i have a few questions about this new version:
- Gecko OS 1.8 still freezes without a warning if a memory card is inserted in slot b. Are you aware of this problematic and are you aware that most Gecko OS don't even know why it happens?
(ok it doesn't really freeze, after i pulled the card, Gecko OS used the rebooter automatically...)
- Why do you suppose to use the .elf for the homebrew channel. Do you have any advantages if you use the .elf there instead of the .dol?
- Is this based on Gecko OS 1.07b, or is it completely new written?
- Ok i guess i won't get the answer, but i have to try:
How did you manage to get the multi dol games to work exactly?
Sorry if the 1st 2 questions are already answered 100 times for the old versions.
I have the same memory card gamecube issue as well gecko doesn't work with it inserted.Does anyone think it will ever support old gamecube action replay disks. Is their a program that i can download that will support this.

Unfortunately a libogc error - which it seems has not been fixed (the HBC team fixed it themselves probably but they didn't share sources.

ELF or DOL.. DOL or ELF.. makes no major difference!

It's based on the source codes of the never released Gecko 2.0

That's a tough one.. actually Gecko Reloader already had the ability as it used special hooking methods.. Gecko 2.0 now includes these reloader hooks without the need of actually reloading. It's difficult ^^

At least i would expect a screen like this: "If your Wii is frozen right now, check if you have a memory card in slot b". This wouldn't solve the problem, but would reduce the confusion of newbies a lot. An alternative would be to look at the card in slot b and look for gamecube saves there and then skip the code that freezes.(Yes i know that's not a clean solution)

Ok, it requires the WiiRD handler in memory then, like Ocarina does. Thanks.
I've got a problem
When I launch my game it says "Loading Title" and then the screen is Black with

Sweet! ;D I have something new to play with today!
Excellent work!
I have system menu 4.0 and the rebooter still doesn't work.Am I doing something wrong?Maybe there is a specific option in the menu.
Lastly,I have the same problem with GC memory cards inserted not only in slot B but also in slot A.
Any help?
Good stuff brkirch.
I was thinking of taking this and modifying it to suit Brawl+ a bit better (autoboot, remove some options, add a GCT/GPF file selector) but this is closed source. I know the risks of opening up the source code with all the backup loaders that came out so if you don't want to release it I understand. Interesting enough, for the gameoptions.txt, why not add an autoboot method to skip the menu entirely?
Maybe, holding down A/Start skips the autoboot?
And just out of curiosity, are you using the latest libogc or are you using the same libs from 1.07b?
Again, thanks a lot. The Brawl+ is really grateful.

Did you update using an inofficial way (like Waninkoko's updater) or did you use the Nintendo update to update your Wii? If you used the regular way you're SOoL as of now!
Thanks for the new version. :)
Since Gecko OS is being worked on again, I'll post an old problem I was hoping someone could take a look:
Currently, if you load a NTSC/J Gamecube game using GeckoOS, it works exactly the same as if you're using a Freeloader. This means most game works, but some have glitches. A few examples:
- Shikigami no Shiro 2: Text is garbled, as if you're trying to render japanese text with an english font
- Mr.Driller Drill Land: Saving doesn't work
- Chaos Field: Saving doesn't work
- Radirgy Generic: Saving doesn't work
I suspect those problems are due to the console still being set as NTSC/US. The saving issues are probably because NTSC/J Gamecubes use a different memory card format.
In a regular Gamecube, the only way around this was to install a region mod. However, some users already confirmed that those problems don't happen with AnyRegion changer:
http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,1625.0.html (http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php/topic,1625.0.html)
If possible, could you take a look and see if this could also be done by GeckoOS. I can do beta testing if necessary. :)

Could you just for test switch the Wii language to Japanese in the gecko OS menu.. I know this helps for SOME(!!) games. Or did you already try that?

Luckily, if you still have the HBC (without cIOS installed), you can still downgrade your IOS's (as I understand it anyway, I haven't done so myself) to trucha-friendly versions (which should support Rebooter, again I'm not 100% positive). Read here (http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=146735) on how to do it.

I already tried with 1.7. Can't try with 1.8 because I'm at work right now, but I'll do so when I get home.
Nice one brkirch !
Awesome! I have this running at this very moment!
Awesome! Supports a lot more now...
My fav part (Not being a USBgecko owner) is the ability to change the backgrounds :D lol.

Tested with 1.8 now. Same problem.
The problem with the finicky NTSC-J games is that they're coded for Shift-JIS encoding but will try (and fail) to use ASCII encoding if they're launched with system default language settings. That breaks saving in some games (Donkey Konga, Mr. Driller) and completely crashes others (like the Japanese version of Bomberman Jetters). For Wii games, this has already been resolved with a simple "force Japanese" language flag. I haven't seen a GameCube solution yet, other than fooling your system into thinking that it's Japanese, i.e. AnyRegion Changer or GameCube hardware region mod.

Gecko 1.8.0.1
---------
What's New:
- A core dump that occurs on some Wiis when launching certain games should no longer occur
- Fixed codeliststart for gameconfig.txt
- A minor Ocarina fix to ensure ASM insert codes will work properly
- Exit no longer causes a core dump if Gecko was launched by a loader that lacks return to loader functionality (such as preloader); instead exit returns to the Homebrew Channel, or resets the Wii if the Homebrew Channel is not installed
Great fixup! That went real fast!
Thanks for the quick updates!
Is it just me, or is anyone else having problems downloading the newest version (1.8.0.1)? When I click the download link on the first post, it redirects me to the USB Gecko homepage.

Sorry about that, it is fixed now.
I have a US Wii and am trying to play Australia / NZ PAL games. I installed Twilight hack / HBC and can play Aust PAL Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock no problems but then I bought PAL Big Brain Academy and Call of Duty 3 and neither will play - they just go to a solid green screen when I load. They will run if I do not select Force NTSC in the config menu but they scroll up the screen..
I had Gecko 1.07 then 1.07b now 1.8 and the same problem, exists on all... Any Suggestions?
Thanks
They up dated it again! Dang! I just DLed 1.8.0 yesterday and just got the chance to play around with the background picture (full cast of Mortal Kombat characters from Armageddon) last night. Thanks for the info! :D
I did have a couple of questions about the background picture. Can it be larger (or smaller) than the 640x480 and what would happen if it is?
Quote from: paprika_killer on April 16, 2009, 03:14:41 PM
what exactly was fixed on the codelist start thing?
and what does the debugger do?
1) It shouldn't exist twice
2) The debugger enabled the USB Gecko connection.. as long as the debugger is running WiiRd can communicate with the game.. without the debugger you'll only have the cheat engine!
For some reason my gamecube controller isn't recognized/doesn't respond whenever I load up Brawl with SD codes. It's like there's no CG controller connected...I tried all the ports and even with different controllers. The Wiimote works fine though...Weird.
My Wii also freezes when I click return to Wii Menu/Reset.
Are you using it as a channel?
Channel wads have issues returning to loader.
I haven't posted here in a while :o
Anyways... thanks for the update brkirch ^_^
The new background and customizable backgrounds make it look a lot better :P
Great to see you've fixed a few bugs too :D
So is the startcodelist command now functioning fully as intended?
I mean, I don't know how you make it all work behind the scenes, but is it not possible to copy a code list above the standard size to the location determined by codeliststart, codelistend? It could already be done using code patching and then a code to change the values of list's location saved in the 80000000-80002800 region (in fact, we use this method on SSBB already).
Of course, I'm greatful for everything the program has to offer, it's certainly a great advance. I'm just not entirely sure what the startcodelist is meant to achieve in its current implementation.
brkirch.
you forgot to make the rebooter hacks actually work for 4.0 :|

Nope, I load it up from HBC. My Wii is 3.2U btw.
EDIT: For some REALLY odd reason my Wii's date was set to 2035. I changed it back and now everything works normally. Wow...who would have guessed?
Nice update, brkirch! Very much appreciated! :)
If I may make a suggestion... the option for an update blocker would be nice as preloader hacks don't work once GeckoOS Rebooter is initiated. Although everyone could block updates with alternative methods, a GeckoOS update blocker would be an invaluable addition. However, don't feel rushed adding this in as games with updates can still be loaded through GeckoOS after the rebooter is initiated.
nice!!
one thing, is there any way to make rebooter options permanent?
i downloaded the update via the Homebrew Browser
and sourcecode won't be released ever. good. it will be reverse engineered then. ^^ No, it's ok. WiiGator did wrong. That's his punishment :-)
Nice New Gecko OS
an idea:
for the next gecko os i would love to see a feature that allows us to put a full list of a games codes and make it able to choose the cheats before loading the game, and be able to pick them each time we go and launch a game. because i hate going back to the computer and picking with codes i want then wanting diffrent codes plz take that in mind
Ohh..
And it the gecko file supposed to be a boot.elf
yes it is supos to be boot.elf (no need to convert into boot.dol) and to manage cheats wii sided download the homebrew app "cheat manager" it's on wiibrew :P
Ive downloaded the newest gecko ( gecko 1.8 )
i extracted the rar file----- then went into HBC (folder ) ----- then copied the gecko 1.8 folder-----and put it into my sd card's (apps folder)
When i tried to boot games ---- it wont let me load it-----it say " ERROR: NO DVD FOUND "
How can i fix this???-----but i can boot games from backup launchers--------but im trying to paly japanese games----- so i need to use gecko------ive searched and searched but cant find any tutorial on how to get gecko to work.....
please help me and pm me back for the instructions

Gecko doesn't and never will support playing backups, so the only way you'd be able to get them to work with Gecko is with a modchip (I think there might be a softmod that would work too, but I'm not sure on that).
In one of the settings menus, there is an "Enable Regionfree" option. It defaults to off, but can be set to on, and saved using "Save Config" in the menu.

Like FMK said, Gecko doesn't load backups. Never has and never will. The back up launcher will (just make sure that you have the updated one & the right stuff installed on your Wii) and you can NTSC-J back ups on it as well. Try forcing NTSC! :)

You can't play back up games of any type on Gecko unless your Wii has a mod chip in it. And who ever said that they used Gecko to play back ups on lied to you unless their Wii had a mod chip in it.
Question, but does the version 1.8 no longer have the VIDTV patch functionality, or I'm just blind?
I'm only wondering about this since some of the Japanese Wii games tend to have a font error with the shift-JIS and spit out garbled stuff. Or is it no incorporated into the application and automatically activates itself?
This is mainly for Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekidou.
Another thing I noticed it that it can't detect my USB gecko sometimes.
Thanks
