Hi there,
Before I start explaining, please note that I have NOT updated my Wii's firmware, I'm still using the 3.3U that I got by doing the manual firmware update that I got from Wiibrew.org. Everything was working fine until yesterday. The last copy protected backup I did was my Tetris Party saved game and this was on the 30th of December.
Yesterday, I purchased Bomberman from the Wii Shop channel and after a game, I wanted to back up my data but I got the copy protected error. I went to the GeckoOS software and attempted to use the Rebooter, but I got this message:
Rebooting With Hooks
Error Loading Menu
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling GeckoOS, same deal. Can anyone help?
u must be on 3.3v2, u updated on the 23rd of october or after that, u need to downgrade to at least 3.3v1 or even better 3.2
try waninkoko's save extractor app.

This software is far from being convenient compared to the Rebooter and you need to use a GameCube controller. Also, I fail to see how this will allow me to backup WiiWare saves since this requires an actual game disk.
Now to everyone else, before starting an argument that my firmware is 3.3v2, tell me how I can find out (that it's V2) so that I can simply take a picture to put this to rest.
maybe you have a brother/sister who updated your wii to 3.3v2?

If my parents have a child that they haven't told me about, then I would love to know how he broke into my place, cracked my Wii's security code and why he would bother updating my firmware >_>
Now please, let's keep the questions at an IT level.
do you own wiimusic or guitar hero world tour? both come with 3.3v2

No, but perhaps I should list the Wii games games I have:
Metroid Prime 3
LoZ TP
Crossbow Training
Super Paper Mario
SSBB
Mario Kart Wii
Wii Sports
Wii Play
Excite Truck
Ghost Squad
Rayman RR
No More Heroes
Okami
Negima!? (JPN)
Bomberman (JPN)
Bomberman Blast (Wiiware)
Tetris Party (Wiiware)
Dr. Mario (Wiiware)
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but Nintendo doesn't force an auto update, correct? You need to agree or shut down the system, right? If so, I don't recall having the choice when I recently purchased Bomberman Blast, Tetris Party or Super Paper Mario.
Again, do you happen to know how I would be able to confirm that my firmware is 3.3v1 or 3.3v2?
the only way to confirm I know is the rebooter
BTW. I have Wiimusic and Guitar Hero World Tour but I am still able to use the rebooter

EDIT: Would it possible that an update of the Homebrew Channel killed the Rebooter?
no

if you download Tetris Party you will get 3.3v2. It doesn't need to ask you. it's in the agreement for the shop fix :| it forces it on you.
FFMLAAK also forces an update, but that's only 3.2 :|

One problem with that statement, I was able to back the copy protected Tetris save file using the Rebooter to my SD card, so that can't be it.
Try to run Bushing's Title Lister (http://wiibrew.org/w/images/4/4a/Title_lister.zip). I'm not sure, but I'm hoping that it outputs the data to your SD card. If it does, please post the file here.
EDIT: Sorry, but now that I think about it, tell me if it lists an IOS51 as being present.

Homebrew Channel is not seeing this. I placed in in my apps folder, was I suppose to put it somewhere else?
You need to rename the 'title_lister.elf' file to 'boot.elf'. Also, what version of the Homebrew Channel do you have? If it is Beta 9 or higher, you will need to convert the ELF file to DOL format. You can do so by using the following program...
Super Simple Elf2Dol converter for Hombrew Channel beta9 (http://www.tehskeen.com/forums/showpost.php?p=43128&postcount=1)
By the way, if this works for you, you will see something like this...

If you are unable to output the information to an SD card, and you have IOS36, tell me what the number in bold is for you.

Is this app available via the Homebrew Browser?

Well like I stated, I didn't install it, so that leaves either Super Paper Mario or Bomberman Blast. One of these games forced an installation of 3.3v2 on my system. Why would a game that was released prior to this firmware update or a non-Nintendo game would do that however is beyond me.
In either case, how risky is doing a firmware downgrade anyway? I already have my SSBB file saved on my SD card and that's the game for which I would hate having to restart all over.
Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem with GeckoOS rebooter not working. Homebrew Channel says that I'm using IOS36 v12.18.
I'm pretty sure that my Wii was (still is?) at firmware 3.3Ev1 because the Wii Shop Channel offered me to update the system before it could be accessed. Instead I ran Tona's version of Wii Shop and IOS51 install from Wiibrew.org and bought Bomberman Blast, World of Goo and the Internet Channel.
Today I tried to get GeckoOS to work but got the Error Loading Menu thing.
So the Bomberman Blast might be the culprit in this case. Or maybe the Wii Shop installer did affect GeckoOS in a way I did not think it would. I'm still very new to Wii tweaking and a bit confused about all the IOSes and their versions, so I would very grateful if someone with better understanding can explain should the GeckoOS work with Wiibrew's shop installer.
I have installed Wiibrew's Shop Installer and I can still use the rebooter so it's probably a wiiware game.
Thanks, I didn't realize that wiiware could also give me unwanted updates. I do want to keep buying games from the wii shop but I also want to be able to run homebrew. Maybe sticking to 3.3v2 is the option with the least amount of hassle right now? Although I will scan the forum posts more thoroughly from now on before buying anything so I don't end up with 3.4... :)

I say it's Bomberman  !!!
I reverted back to 3.3v1 by using "October 23rd Wii Fix" from GBAtemp. Everything went smoothly and I am now able to use the rebooter, shop channel and all my bought wiiware (even Bomberman!) still works. Homebrew now says that I'm using IOS36 v4.18. On the contrary to the guide I did install the shop channel and skipped the installation of wad manager & gator.
What Nintendo did was patch the ability to allow coders to identify as an other title, in rebooter's case it identifies as the system menu then jumps to it. Nintendo patched up every IOS on the Wii with the online update. As IOS16 is not an IOS that is on the system or used in games, they didn't include this.
However next update, Nintendo will more than 100% likely place an IOS of 16 on your system, so even that can't be used.
Rebooter isn't needed for gecko 2.0 anyway, as i worked out the compatibility issues with the press a mode, and this doesn't depend on an exploit it just uses Nintendos own code and they can't patch it out as its needed by many retail games., so even without rebooter you will be ok if you have updated to 3.4 and want to boot games like red steel and other titles which had problems.
i would avoid updating though, as there are no benefits to it, and we can always install IOS files needed for games as they are officially signed by Nintendo.

If Nintendo could have went the way of the PS3 and made the Wii region Free, I probably wouldn't be using the Homebrew Channel in the first place.
yes so true,
i think the 2 largest mistakes Nintendo made with the Wii are these
1. No Region Free Games
2. Not allowing Wiiware to be an open platform for Independent coders.

Seeing the DSi coming up in EU/NA things are just going worse.. DSiWare remains closed and the DSi is the first region locked handheld. And while my acceptence for region coding is limited in case of consoles (okay, okay, okay, you normally do not take your console along on vacancies), I have no acceptance for the DSi.. how will this end? I am allowed to carry my DSi to my next flight to X but if I want some games to play during my journey I can't buy any because my DSi wouldn't play them - thank you, Nintendo.
The Game Gear wasn't region locked, the Game Boys werent's, the original DS (DS Phat/DS Lite) weren't and even the PSP is not.. and now.. the first region locked handheld for mass-market.
Additionally I should say: looking on the console side.. region codes seem to get unpopular.. most PS3 games are region-free and most X360 games are at least multi region and many even region free - single region should be over - seems like Nintendo didn't recognize!

The DSi will not have physical card games that will be compatible only with DSi and be region locked (unlike GB and GBC). The DSiWares (like Wiiwares) will be the softwares and games that will be regions locked which is kind of a stupid term since these are downloadable and will be available depending on your region.

No. 2 is one of the things I wanted most...I'm into making apps for Ipod Touch/Iphone right now, and it really hit me awhile ago...I wish I could do the same with Wii...
And, why would Nintendo not want region free? What is wrong with it?
Importing games from other countries for less money? Making you buy a region C Wii to play a region C game, when your old Wii and games are region D and can't play them, to make more profit?

You DO know that regardless if you buy the European, North American or Japanese version of a game, that all the cash eventually goes to Nintendo of Japan because they're a Japanese company, right?

You do also know that Nintendo can charge differently according to regions. And in most cases Europeans and Australians for example get charged the most for the games. Ever wondered why J is Japan, E North America and P Europe? Doesn't make too much sense but if you look at it:
J = Japan
E = Extra Cash
P = Pissed off customers
Why are Europeans pissed off? Well.. multiple reasons: in most cases we have to wait longer for a game and even have to pay more. For example Brawl.. when released it was 60$ or 60€ - now most of you Americans had to pay taxes on the price so let's raise it 75$ which would be 25% taxes (in most cases it's much less). Now 1€ is about 1.4$ --> so 60€=84$ (Euro prices include taxes). So having to wait longer to get the same game and then even pay more? Yes, that truly justifies the P. And most publishers do it the same way.. one of the reasons I nowadays favor Valve's online distribution system for PC games (Steam).. Valve released Portal, the Orangebox and whatever at the exact same time worldwide. Pissed-ioff customers? Not that I know!

Or perhaps it's because they want you to pay extra for having to include a damn PAL region coding just to accommodate the fact that you wanted to have a better picture on your TVs than the rest of us >_>
It's pretty much like asking for extras on your Pizza, you pay more and it take a bit more time.

Regardless, they still have to program a PAL format in there, which means extra time and money. Adding the that to the fact that the EUR and GBP is of higher value than both the Yen and USD and you have your answer.
you know i dont even understand why thy even bother with 50hz anymore, every tv made beyond about 1998 probably supports 60hz mode, ive never experienced 60hz mode not working even on a tv which is approx 10 years old min.

You've just answered your own question. A lot of people still have older TV sets and are keeping them because they don't give a rat's ass about HD and their set still works perfectly. Also, like it or not, video games are toys and like any toys, one of it's main target must remain children. Do you know many kids with a High Def TV or even modern in their room? No, they get the old TV that the parents use to have.
huh?? you dont need high def for 60 hz mode, seriously non compatible 60hz tvs probably dont even exist anymore trust me

Well it's you Vs the video game industry. I'm pretty sure the video industry knows more about the situation than you do or they would have stopped including PAL mode in games nowadays, I doubt that they're including it for shits and giggles.
