Title: Playing imports?
Post by: BahamutLagoon on November 28, 2008, 07:57:54 AM
How exactly is it done? I just ordered a Japanese game and was wondering if there's anything special that needs to be done to play it properly? Or just load it up with Gecko OS? Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm new to all of this.  :-[

Load Gecko OS (Latest Build recommended), from there put in your Import and run the game. You may have to fiddle with the video options. Remember that different regions may use different video formats. NTSC for USA and most of Japan, PAL for United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, however there are more than one PAL mode. Just poke around the options, dont worry, if it doesnt work or comes out looking like garbage, just reset the Wii. You cant break anything so dont be afraid to use trial and error to get it working.

Do not confuse Imports with Backups. Gecko OS does not load backups or bootleg games.

Thanks for the info. I'm not wanting to play bootlegs just imported games. I thought maybe the Rebooter was what played them since I noticed the Region Free option in the Rebooter options. But apparently I have that update that disables the Rebooter (I get the Error Loading Menu) so I was worried I wouldn't be able to play them.

Yep, aussie-land uses PAL mode. I think PAL50, not quite sure.

To clarify, the UK/EU thing, doesnt UK use PAL60 and EU use PAL50 (or vice-versa)?  Thats what i was getting at.

That hurt to read...Have you ever heard of something called punctuation?

Most countries here in Europe natively use 50hz mode but can switch to 60hz with almost any TV newer than 8-10 (more/less?) years. Don't know about the UK however.

correct, its the same with the uk, however sometimes you wont be able to play some imports on pal 50 or pal 60. sometimes you have to get to a certain stage or something dumb like that. lemme give u an example

super smash bros brawl (NTSC-U) on a pal wii

50Hz mode: sometimes afetr loading the game the whole game will be quite laggy, also if u use squirtles b move or marios down b mvoe it will freeze the game (like when u screw around with hacks it makes that beeeeeeeep sound)

60Hz mode: you will always get a black screen unless youve unlocked all characters and stages, once uve done that u can play brawl without avoiding down b with mario or b with squirtle, also u ont have to reset loads of times to load the game without slow mo. (in toher words its like playing brawl normally)

i dunno about other imports but ive seen it on gbatemp, imports sometimes work on 50Hz mode sometimes on 60Hz mode, sometimes neither, sometimes buggy in one but not the other, soemtimes both buggy, u get the picture.

not completely correct.. to properly play Brawl in 60 Hz mode:
-launch in 50 Hz
-enter options and go to deflicker
-disable deflickering
-now reset
-launch in 60 Hz
-screen will go black (Warning screen and loading sequence) for about 45 seconds
-intro will appear and play
-game will perfectly run in 60 Hz!

I've never had any problems at all with GeckoOS. The very first time I booted it with Freeloader (the disk) I got black and white. That seemed to be a problem with my TV since it worked after a reboot and hasn't bothered me ever since.

Since then I've been able to run it in 60Hz (using GeckoOS) just fine. No freezing (not including cheat freezes), no weird screen.
If it makes any difference I'm running 3.3E (v1) but it shouldn't be a firmware issue right?

Well, it was just a theory.

It's the NTSC version (title ID RSBE01). Not sure if there are several versions but I'm using the first anyway.
