Title: Homebrew Channel beta9
Post by: Link on October 26, 2008, 07:09:31 AM
Okay.. it's done.. Team Twiizers released a new Homebrew channel..

The new feature list is kinda cool:

So.. Wii version 3.3b is not a problem anymore.. your HBC will auto-update if your Wii is online.

Please note: devkitpro creates malformed elf files - you should convert the ELF files of it to DOL.
Therefore: what you can do:

--> Go to usbgecko.com, download Gecko OS.. and copy the HBC folder in your apps directory as usual. Then from the DOL folder take main.dol and also put it into apps\GeckoOS___\ - delete boot.elf there and rename main.dol to boot.dol .

I also have made a quick package of Gecko OS 1.07b: http://wiird.l0nk.org/gos-hbc-dol.zip

To fix other ELF files - download DevKitPro please and run the following command on the elf file:
powerpc-gekko-objcopy -O binary boot.elf boot.dol

Big kudos to bushing and marcan... proves again! Homebrew will not appear by a "mere" shop update :)

All of my apps? The apps I support are only Gecko OS 1.07b - actually if you wish I can also do Gecko OS 1.06f - if you wish Ocarina.. do it yourself.. Ocarina is unsupported!

I heard that you can't install BootMii with the latest firmware, is this true?
Title: Re: Homebrew Channel beta9
Post by: Link on October 26, 2008, 04:55:29 PM
You can't install BootMii because it isn't out yet ^^

BootMii is by team Twiizers, they succeeded installing the HBC on 3.3b so I guess once BootMii is out and no fix by Nintendo.. it should work!

why doesn't Ocarina work anymore?
I heard it's because it's a boot.elf file, and needs to be a boot.dol file.
Anybody know where I can get an updated Ocarina boot file?

If not, how can I rollback the update / revert to beta8?

I'm installing the Wii Shop and IOS51 now
I'll update once i find out some more info on it.

HackMii says the Bootmii-Core installer will be using the same installer.. as far as I can read things there, BootMii isn't even out yet. marcan mentioned even in the comments they are still developing on it.. wiibrew says there's not a release date. So where do you get your info about BootMii? Was it leaked?

Hold on i'll find the source
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/23_Oct_Updates (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/23_Oct_Updates)
It says there BootMii still works if it was installed before updating.
But i too thought that BootMii wasn't released

Wiibrew is only just a Wiki.. so maybe someone leaked it.. or someone thought "Oh it also requires an installation to /dev/flash". And typed it there.. fact is.. OFFICIAL releases of BootMii do not exist :(

I did everything in the directions, now Gecko OS loads but there's nothing in there except a picture of a gecko in the bottom left corner. There's no menu or anything. Just says Gecko OS at the top.

Is there anything else I need? I only have Gecko OS in my apps/GeckoOS107b folder now, with the icon.png, boot.dol, and meta.xml files. Nothing else.

Please remove all Gamecube memory cards.. the HBC may be memcard fixed, Gecko OS is not!

Simply download the HBC installer from http://hbc.hackmii.com - make a folder called apps\hbcinstall on your sd card.. and put boot.elf insdie.. then you can update the HBC using the HBC ^^

Big kudos to bushing and marcan... proves again! Homebrew will not appear by a "mere" shop update :)

Alright, I'm doing my best to follow instructions, but I'm having a little trouble. Previously I used Ocarina to put a cheat on Super Smash bros Brawl. The update rolled around, and now I'm trying to get my cheat working again. Seeing that Ocarina is discontinued, it looks like I need to use Gecko.

So, as instructed, I downloaded the most recent Gecko from their site: GeckoOS107b.zip.
I opened up the zip, and again, as instructed copied the HBC folder into my Sd cards apps folder.
The next step confuses me a little. You say to put main.dol into "apps\GeckoOS___\ ".
This is where I'm a little lost. Should I also copy GeckoOS107b into the apps folder? If so, which one: the one that contains HBC? Or the one HBC contains, because there are two...
In any case, I expected that you may have meant apps\HBC\GeckoOS107b, and so I continued thusly.
I deleted the boot, and renamed main.

At this point, you explain you made a package, but I'm not sure what to do with it. Also, you say to take care of the other .elfs, use devkitpro. What other elfs? At this point in the tutorial, I have no .elfs anywhere on my sd.

Edit: In addition, I'm not quite sure how to use codes with Gecko.. Is there a tutorial or explanation someone can point me to? Or if it's simple enough, could someone explain it to me?

I tried all of the instructions up to this point, but I don't see anything related to GeckoOS in my homebrew channel...

What should I do?

unpack it into [sdcard]:\apps\geckoos107b

to use codes: just open Gecko OS in the HBC and select "Launch game".. the codes from ocarina should be taken!

Thanks Link! Now I'm loading Gecko sucessfully. However... I already deleted my cheats and gct file... So I need to create a new one. However, Ocarina isn't downloadable, and Gecko doesn't come with the promised PC software anymore. Where should I get codemanager or something that can create gct files so I can be on my way?

in DevKitPro there is a file called powerpc-gekko-objcopy.exe - copy that in the same directory of your ELF files. Then use a command terminal (cmd.exe in Windows XP) (if you do not know how to use those: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DOS_commands ). And browse to the folder the exe. Then run the given command.

Some ELF files may still work on the newest version of the Homebrew Channel.  However, they more than likely do not.  If they do not, then they will need to be converted to DOL for the time being.

It probably doesn't make a difference as to which one that you use.  However, tona's version will place the signing bug into IOS51 if you choose.  Muzer's version will not.

Is placing the signing bug in a good thing or bad thing?

The signing bug, or "trucha" bug, is the bug that previous versions of the Homebrew Channel exploited.  That bug is fixed in all IOS versions on the new firmware, so the installer now uses an undisclosed bug.  If you use homebrew frequently, you might consider having the signing bug present as a good thing.  However, I think that the newest version of the Wii Shop Channel is the only thing that uses IOS51, so in the end, it probably doesn't make a difference if you want it in there or not.

Thanks.

I was installing it when I get to the Shop Installer and it got to 8/18 and then said error processing http request and went back to the System Menu.  Wii is fine, I tried connecting to the Wii Shop, no luck.  Can anyone tell me what happened?

I haven't seen this posted in the last few pages but the Gecko OS Reboot feature doesn't work so I can't get codes in use. Is there any other way or will I have to convert ocarina for now?

an alternative to this would be to load gecko OS and hit launch game(press A not B) itll load the game with codes. you cant reboot for now...they need to update gecko OS

For some reason, when I load the game from Gecko OS, It says "No SD cheats found" and loads the game without cheats. I still have my cheats that I used for Ocarina, but it won't load them. Do I need to do something with them?

there were rumours that nuke didn't wan't to update GeckoOs anymore because of an copy of GeckoOs that could play "backups" without a modchip made by Wiigator, but he said this week that the new update will be soon

I guess things got a little better as WiiGator renamed the tool and removed Nuke's, kenobi's, Y.S.' and my name.. it's really looking as if we helped which in fact noone of us did.. Nuke for himself didn't want to have anything to do with backups (legal problems also: usbgecko.com is hosted in USA and the legal situation there is hard - and he's living in Hong Kong.. where it isn't easy either).. I for myself tested the backup launcher: it's working well.. but still: I do not and will not support it.. this forum is busy enough with regular Gecko OS and WiiRd related stuff.

Though: as the backup launcher is based on Gecko OS I assume it still hunks the WiiRd code handler into the game.. I haven't confirmed that myself.. if it does.. fine: I could imagine Backup Launcher users hiding in that forum.. and it would be really hard to uncover them as long as the backup launcher behaves like Gecko OS. Thus. if they have WiiRd problems.. maybe I can help - but that's all of it.

However: "How to get that backup running" support, general "How does Backup Launcher work", "What is it", "How do I use it", "Do I need to adjust my ISOs for Backup Launcher" - those people won't find support here.. atg least not by me.. it's the same for people using modchips..

What however is allowed to be discussed here: "How do I make copies of games using USB Gecko" - or generally how can I backup my Wii discs to PC. Basically: backuping games is something worth doing in many cases.. maybe you want to listen to the awesome music of Super Mario Galaxy (it's in AST format and can play with a special Winamp plug-in on your PC) - or of Brawl.. or maybe you want to inspect model formats. Game inspection is absolutely nothing wrong and as it can't be done by just inserting your game into a PC drive. I for myself am perfectly fine with creating backups for that purpose. I even collected soundtracks of Mario Galaxy, NiGHTS:Journey of Dreams and Smash Bros Brawl that way btw. - I like the tunes of these games - what's wrong if I want to play them in my favorite player without having to do an analog Line-In recording.

How DO you put a wii game on your computer? I thought you needed a SD card.

Striped down my own text: I did write that they do not work in PC drives and therefore discussing how to do backups (SD card, USB Gecko, USB harddrive, whatever) is fine!

Technically you can put it in a PC drive but only 4, very rare, LG drives( LG-8164b LG-8163b LG-8162b and LG-8161b)
But they take up to 20hours to rip a wii disc, the gecko is the best option.

So if I burn the data.bin file to a blank cd will it work?
Title: Re: Homebrew Channel beta9
Post by: Link on November 01, 2008, 08:22:04 PM
if data.bin is the name of your Wii ISO.. and you have a modchip.. and you burn it on a DVD (the Wii cannot read CDs.. even ISOs smaller than 700 MB have to be burnt on DVD).. then yes, it should work..

Please note: devkitpro creates malformed elf files - you should convert the ELF files of it to DOL.
Therefore: what you can do:

To fix other ELF files - download DevKitPro please and run the following command on the elf file:
powerpc-gekko-objcopy -O binary boot.elf boot.dol

OK, I'm stuck at this part.

I googled DevKitPro and downloaded it, but I don't see any file or folder called powerpc-gekko-objcopy, or whatever.

Help plz? I just need to know how to convert ELF into DOL, that's it. Sorry, I just didn't understand your instructions.....

To convert an ELF file to DOL format, just use the following tool...

Yeah, you can, you just have to convert it to a dol.

So, anyways, I figured it out.

you can still use ocarina if u want but it is out of date. besides gecko os is better. it can do way more plus it already has ocarina instaled in it
