Hello,
I have a Korean Wii with firmware 3.3K and chip D2SUN 3.0 installed. I can boot Untouched Korean backups and some USA/JAP games (also have to be untouched), but i cannot get any Homebrew running. I get error messages every time. See pictures below. If anyone knows what I do wrong, or can help me get things running please contact me! Thanks!

Most homebrew requires IOS21 and so.. you can try an import game and try to install their update.. considering you're on 3.3 it shouldn't brick or semi-brick your Wii but you'll end up with duplicated weather and news channels..
Do not brickblock the discs!
I'll check for a few games in my own collection:
-Smash Bros (EU): IOS11,12,13,14,15,17,20,21,22,28,30,31,33,34,35,36 --> good choice, will install many many IOS files!
-Smash Bros (US): IOS11,12,13,14,15,17,20,21,22,28,30,31,33,34,35,36 --> good choice, will install many many IOS files!
-Metroid (EU): IOS11,12,13,15,17,20,21,22,28
-Mario Galaxy (EU): IOS11,12,13,15,16,20,21,30,31,33,35
-Mario Kart Wii (EU): IOS11,12,13,14,15,17,20,21,22,28,30,31,32,33,34,35,36 --> great choice, installs pretty much all IOS files!
For Metroid, Galaxy and Mario Kart Wii I expect the US and JP versions to install the same IOS files.
Note: while the update shouldn't brick your Wii.. of course I can't promise anything or even take any warranty!
Hello Link,
Thank you for the reply! Since I have a NTSC-K console i guess its better to install a NTSC-J or NTSC-U update then PAL? Which should I choose?
How can I make as sure as possible no semi-brick or full brick will occur?
How can I check what IOS are in a update on a disc?
BR
Going to extract all the updates from Mario_Kart_USA_Wii-QwiiF with WUFE and check if it is the same once as in the PAL version..
Then its time to flip the coin.. anyone that thinks this is a bad idea?
Installing just the IOS would be optimal.. but as you can't use WAD manager and you can't use fakesigned discs.. it shouldn't matter if you take NTSC-U, NTSC-J or PAL discs.. however: NTSC-K consoles are close to unknown so.. your own risk!
I heard the Korean Wii is in no way compatible with other countries, because the Wii only supports UTF-8. Korean characters aren't included there, I believe only in UTF-16, so they had to make a separate Wii just to include Korean characters. Chances are even with a modded Wii you aren't really able to play games outside Korea.
I used Mario_Kart_USA_Wii-QwiiF (untouched) to update the Korean Wii with firmware 3.3K. No previous updates done and the Wii was produced in April this year. Drive is D2C2.
The result: everything went OK!
Only "negative" thing is that now there is two unusable channels, since the Korean Wiis does not come with Forcast and News channel, and the new US channels does not start. The Wii just shows "You can't use this channel" (according to my girlfriend) then hangs. Same thing with Internet channel that I installed.
Before the update the Wii started Korean backups and some JAP/US backups. This has not changed, still the same.
I installed HBC8 and tried with Gecko OS 1.07b. With Gecko OS the Wii starts all games i tried with, region does not seem to matter. JAP, US and PAL all start. Two thumbs up!
If you press home button in a JAP game the menu shoes in Japanese, and if you start a US or PAL game the menus are in English. Korean games are of course in Korean.

Waninkoko released a channel remover before.. you could forcefully remove the channels if you wish.. you can however just move them on your Wii page 4.. out of sight, out of interest!
Yeah I just moved them to page 4. Don't want to mess with them if I don't have to.
Tried to start Super Mario Sunshine gamecube also. Both PAL and US version refuse to start in Gecko OS. Disc error just after boot.
Both work fine in my PAL Nintendo Wii.. too bad.
Hello
I also have a Korean Wii with firmware 3.3K
When I use The homebrew channel beta 8 (Selfbooting disc image - the_homebrew_channel-beta_8-iso-JAP.tar.gz) I get this message :
http://i36.tinypic.com/2sagh7p.jpg (http://i36.tinypic.com/2sagh7p.jpg)
there is no way that i can run "The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess" game, so I cant use Twilight Hack
as you mentioned I'm downloading Mario_Kart_USA_Wii-QwiiF
I would really appreciate if you could tell me the steps you've done to install and use Twilight Hack , Homebrew Channel and Applications to run games from different regions
Thanks in advance
Any DVD that isn't Signed by Nintendo i.e not an original game wont boot on a Korean Wii as the 3.3 system menu and IOS files it uses already has the signing bug fixed.
Im not up to date with Wii hacking but my guess is Zelda hacked save is blacklisted as well, as Nintendo knew about this before the console was released so they could take action. This is pure speculation though, but it would make sense for them to do this as copy VC games costs them millions of dollars in lost revenue.
Considering the posts above:
you have a modchip, otherwise you couldn't burn the HBC install disc.. please do the following:
-make sure your modchip is set to allow imports - otherwise Regionfree might help
-get yourself a copy of Mario Kart Wii or Smash Brothers (non-korean).. insert the disc
-you'll be prompted to update - perform the update.. it should work
-reboot Wii.. you'll end up having Weather and News channels you can't use.. move them on page 4 if they disturb you
-get a copy of Zelda import.. I am pretty sure NTSC-U or NTSC-J Zelda will run.. PAL will most likely not run (seeing PAL Zelda does not work on NTSC-U and NTSC-J Wiis with modchip solutions but NTSC-J Zelda runs on NTSC-U and vice versa). Run it.. exit it..
-now install the Twilight Hack
-use it to install the HBC
Hello Firefly!
JAP version of Zelda starts, the other does not. So use JAP twilight save and copy to korean wii. Then burn JAP version of the game. Do not modify the iso in any way before you burn, because then it will not start.
The problem is that it will not allow you to use any homebrew or istall HBC8. To be able to do this you first have to run Mario_Kart_USA_Wii-QwiiF unmodified iso, and let it install the USA update. After that you will be able to use JAP version of Zelda to install HBC8 without any problem.

Hello, I have a Korean Wii.. 3.3k with no mod chip.. just the original system.
I have an original SmashBros (US) version that obviously can't be played on my machine.
Do I have any options?
Thanks for the help.
Use Gecko OS 1.7

Hm.. I guess right now you're SOL (simply out of luck).. to Sammature: he won't be able to install Gecko OS.
1. You absolutely need a modchip..
2. use the modchip to install the update of Smash Bros (US).. simply insert the disc and let it update
--> if you just want to play Smash Bros and not cheat it might be that the following steps are not required!
3. get a copy of Japanese Zelda - Twilight Princess
4. use the twilight hack to install the HOmebrew channel - see YouTube, several posts here and whatever
5. install Gecko OS
6. profit
Yeah, really hard to find a mod chip in my city in Korea. The Wii is not really taking off here.
Thanks for all the help though!

I don't live in Korea but i heard you can buy mod chips and get help with installation in the electronics markets of Yongsan, Seoul.
Otherwise chips are available everywhere online. I recommend D2SUN 3.0 (www.d2sun.com (http://www.d2sun.com)), it works flawless with my Korean Wii..

How did you get a Korean Wii? ha ha
Thanks for the help!
Hi everybody
I have a Korean Wii 3.3K with D2sun, it was with HBC and Gecko installed, buyed in Yongsang ST, working perfect with Zelda Mario galaxy and Tony Hawk, but when I came home I try to change region, and everything goes wrong since now.
Like the menus were in korean trying to copy, I delete the HBC channel, and put WiiFit PAL something download and update and that make a semibrick, with duplicate channels.
Now Tony Hawk and Mario galaxy works, but Zelda disc it´s good to read at first, but doesn´y play, with a black screen.
After read all the posts I try with Mario Kart USA, and the same with Zelda, read but doesn´t load.
So do you think there´s any solution? without running Zelda it´s impossible to install HBC and also Gecko?
Thanks a lot for your help.
Duplicated channels are no semi-brick!
Can you access the settings menu.. please delete your Zelda Savegame there!
Ok sorry , yes it´s not a semi-brick, and yes again the Wii it´s perfect function, with access to all setup.
I don´t have any Zelda savegame from original game, I only have copy from the twilight-hack from the SD card.

Zelda JAP game and save games does not have to be original to run.. you just need a mod chip.
Yep I have one inside D2Sun, and my Zelda it´s a backup, but now doesn´t load.
I also have try with a original Zelda PAL, and happen the same, starts in the Wii menu, disc channel, but fails to load.
according to guzzard only Zelda Japanese works.. is your backup a PAL version? Then it most likely won't work!
Nop my backups came with me from Korea Wii seller, I don´t Know if are JAP, I think that are USA and NTSC, cause are in english.
but I´ve try with JAP Zelda isos and doesn´t work also.

Get Zelda twilight princess JAP version from internet. Unpack and burn with Imgburn standard settings. Do not do anything with the iso-file before burning. If you modify the iso in anyway before burning it will not work, you will get a black screen.
If the discs you have tried with are not even detected by your Wii then it must be something wrong with the chip/install.
BR
Thanks guzzard for your answers.
That´s what exactly I did, Torrent Jap Zelda and I burn on a Mac with disk utilities, and I guess it´s allright, for ex, with Mario Kart the Wii read the burn iso downloaded, but doesn´t run, with Zelda JAP, doesn´t read at all.
I think that chip it´s allright also cause I can play with 2 backups, Tony Hawk and Mario Galaxy.
I don´t modify the iso, cause I don´t know how to.
I think my Wii doesn´t run Zelda, cause with the update, avoid to play for not permits to install HBC, with the twilight saves.
"doesn't read at all"? Do you see "Game disc cannot be read" or do you get the game logo.
Well all it´s in Korean, so I don´t know what´s in screen.
I mean I can see logo and music on main menu , on disc channel, but when I start, black screen, that´s with Zelda, and Mario Kart.
I can play Tony Hawk and Mario Galaxy.
WiiFit PAL original, doesn´t appear in disc channel and of course doesn´t load.
I ´ve try with The Legond of Zelda Twilight Princess(JPN).iso 4,38Gb
Ruki ,You need to config geckoos's config option

Thats the same iso as I used. Unmodified iso should be 4,37 GB (4 699 979 776 bytes). If this disc does not boot it definitely has to do with the mod chip or disc burning to do.. I have the D2SUN 3.0.. it should work. I don't know your version..
What you can try to do is to burn the iso with Imgburn in windows xp. Use high quality media and a good burner.. if it still does not work you can try with a JAP original of the game, or change/update the chip in your Wii.. I think it's most likley the quality of the burn is bad.. I have tried a couple of diffrent brands in my Wii and Verbatim works the best..
Hope it helps.. BR
Hey Guzzard thanks again!
2 more questions, How can I know what chip´s inside? only opening the Wii?, and if I came there how can I do the update?
YES it´s exactly the same .iso of yours, Now I´m trying with Verbatin, I used Ritex before, hope it helps.
And try with a original JAP??? tell me how can I get one.
Kavid I don´t have Gecko installed, cause I cant install Home Brew Channel.
geckoos can solution question about black screen.
Something very rare happens in my Wii.
I record Zelda Jap.iso again, on a Verbatim at 1x, and, starts the Wii , read, music and logo, hit start and... black screen , BUT, a message appears, but without any signal to update, and the game it wasn´t running, I wait a minute, starts to chang the text jap? korean? message, so mini panic, and eject and power off.
That was the last time the Wii recognise that disc, then a "?" sign, so no Wii disc.

guys ive updated to the latest firmware like an idiot and i updated the homebrew channel and blah blah blah got gecko os 1.07b or w/e, the new one basically. and err whenever i put my us brawl in (in my pal wii) WITH region free on, when i click load game, the screen says starting up game, and the disk jsut keeps spinning. does anyone know if i can get round this without saying "google is your friend" at any point of his/her post coz atm i feel like killin gbatemp.

the DVD-R was Verbatim, burned at 1x untouched like an .iso, the text message says that? bad DVD quality or error reading?

bad DVD quality or error reading? yes,it is ,because of bad Dvd quality.show "说明书" erro
burn DVD-r Verbatim to use 16X or 8X ,no problem ,I use 16X burn Verbatim. No burnt dvd-r is bad.I play game normally on wii

Hello Ruki,
Yes this looks like you have a low quality burner..
I have 2 dvd burners. I cannot use my Sony/NEC burner to burn Nintendo Wii och XBOX 360 games. They never work, no matter what discs or speed i use.
If i use the same discs and burn them with my LG Electronics burner it always works perfect both for Nintendo Wii and XBOX 360.
Try burning the untouched iso with another burner, at a friends house or something? Pioneer and LG burners generally give good result i know from experiance.
BR
YESSSSSS!!!!! THANKS A LOT Guzzard, and kavid and everybody!! :) :P :P :-[
I use my internal Pioneer of my G5 it´s a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D:
, but I have one external a 108 that finally works perfect!!
I copy Zelda, starts!, install HBC 8 and run Gecko and my Wii Fit PAL!!!
One more question, Do you think can I use Region changer tu make my Korean Wii NTSC to PAL and spanish language?
Thanks again

If you know what you're doing you can convert a Korean Wii to a PAL Wii.. or an X Wii to a Y Wii. All Wiis are hardware wise identical. However: the process MIGHT brick your system!
OK Link, so What do you think I should do?
I use anyregion changer to chang region JAp,The result is fail。show 24582 erro.
My classmate who work on nintendo co. tell me that wii is all same harware, defferent is sytem.
I think korea wii can change to other region, but none hack it. How pity.
Hi everyone
Thank you for posting on this very informative thread. I am living in Korea at the moment and would very much like to get myself a wii. I have had a look around Yongsan and it seems easy enough to get a modded wii. My problem is that the wii's menus will still be in Korean, even if it can play English games. I would like to know from you guys if it is in any way possible to change it to English? From reading this post I'm not entirely sure (some people seem to suggest it is, while others suggest that the Korean Wii is fundamentally different and therefore not open to the same hacks as the Japanese and American wii's). Also, will it be easy enough to use, even if the menus are in Korean?
I am a bit of a newbie to all of this so any other suggestions related to purchasing a Korean wii would be greatly appreciated (e.g. what modchips are desirable and which are not).

There is no knowledge about how well AnyRegion Changer works on Korean Wiis. What we know: Korean Wiis are hardware wise completely identical with all other Wiis worldwide - that means they'd also be Gamecube compatible.
You would need to get a chipped Wii:
-Zelda Japanese
-run the twilight hack to install the HBC
-install IOS16 if you happen to already have the shop update
-set your Wii to a US/EU Wii with AnyRegion Changer (US: NTSC Wii, EU: PAL Wii - both know English)
-install the US/EU system menu and all related IOS as well as BC and MIOS files
--> Result: Now you own a US/EU Wii.. with support for English language. Technically you do not have a Korean Wii anymore the Wii's region is 100% decided by software! As you have proper US/EU software.. your Wii is technically no Korea Wii anymore.
Please note: after doing this you might have to set your modchip to EU/US using its config disc or via an upgrade.
Attention: Some modchips require soldering to set the region.

Hey Ryan_in_Korea, I also have a Korean Wii and am planning on changing it to US region. However, I'm waiting for my chip to arrive. Any luck in trying to change regions yet?
Hi,
Let me just start off by saying that I am NOT an expert on any of this.
Changing the Korean Wii to English seems to be a bit of a tricky process. It is not the same as say changing a Japanese wii to English. I do not understand the technical reasons for this. From my research on the internet, until recently nobody has managed to change it. I have, however, noticed that some places in Singapore are selling Korean wii's modified to US region. So it is possible. The closest thing that I have found to a guide on how to do it is this- http://www.tehskeen.com/forums/showthread.php?p=46042#post46042. My technical know how is not amazing so I have not been brave enough to try it. I am hoping that it will become more mainstream, at which point I will give it a go.
I hope this helps you.
Ryan
I was checking the video.. this is what they did:
1. You need a hardware modified Wii. So get yourself a pre-modified DVD drive and connect it (like they did) or get yourself a modchip to solder on or put in if it comes with a WiiClip.
2. You need Mario Kart NTSC-U (Backup or Original does not matter, not brickblocked).. install the update from Mario Kart.. this will already give you the US weather and news channel and it'll install important IOS files on your system so that future things work! Installing the update will take some time!
3. Your Wii will restart - it is still 3.3K! You will see weather and news channels - now remove Mario Kart and insert Legend of Zelda which you'll also require (it seems the NTSC-J version was used).. start Zelda, create a savegame and exit.
4. Go into the Savegame menu and delete the Zelda savegame - now use a Twilight Hack savegame coming from SD card amnd copy it onto your Wii flash - in case of 3.3K use TP Hack 0.1 beta - the inserted SD card should be prepared to have the Homebrew channel installer as boot.dol
5. Start Zelda again - talk to the gui.. and the HBC installer will start!
6. Install the Homebrew channel, reboot and enter it.
7. You'll require the following applications and files on your SD card (those are probaby shipped in the IOS and cIOS WAD packages):
-CIOS16-64-v257-prod.wad
-CIOS36-64-v1042-rev7.wad (Waninkoko's custom IOS)
-IOS11, IOS12, IOS 13, IOS 14, IOS 15, IOS 17, IOS 20, IOS 21, IOS 22, IOS 28, IOS 30, IOS 31, IOS 33, IOS 34, IOS 35, IOS 36, IOS 37, IOS 38, IOS 53, IOS 55, IOS 9 (failed installing in the video)
-Channel File Manager from Cashman
8. Load Channel File Manager
-install all IOS and cIOS WADs
9. If some IOS files didn't succeed installing - don't panic.. reboot your Wii and repeat step 9 just install IOS in opposite order.
-install all remaing IOS and cIOS WADs
Your Wii has now practically all IOS files a 3.3v2 US Wii has
10. Reboot again
11. Load AnyRegion Changer 1.1b
-Set Language Setting to English
-Console Area to USA
-Game Region to USA
-Country Code to 49 (USA)
-System Menu Region to USA
-Save settings!
-Select "Exit to homebrew channel"
12. Reboot to System Menu
13. You'll notice your Wii is semi-bricked... you can't enter the menus!
14. Run AnyRegion Changer 1.1 (tona, normal edition)
-Select "Install System Menu 3.2"
-accept with "Yes"
-PatchMii will start automatically downloading IOS35 and the SystemMenu
--> this will take some time do not cancel!
15. Reboot your Wii - its software now is 100% US!
Some modchips will now require setting them to US region! The wii region is solly decided via software, as your software now is US software you technically have a US Wii now - the only differences to a US Wii are:
-your external serial number (LKM whatever)
-your internal serial number (LUXXXXXX)
other than that! You're a US user now ^^

Don't the korean wii's have different keys?
The keys are stored in IOS41 and IOS45 - if you'd install these on a US/EU/JP Wii you'd have them

Which Zelda version do you try to use? We're talking about the Japanese version, aren't we? I haven't tested but following the statements users did here it will only work using the Japanese version, not the North American/NTSC-US or the European/PAL version!
i've a usa Zelda . and i've changed the region of this game with "WIU" Application to Japanese and the game still not work ...
is there any link of this game that users here used it ?, then i can download the Corect Version of zelda ???
i was searched the internet but not found Japanese Zelda ...
where are you people ???? a gamer is dying hereeeeeeeeeeeeeee

You shouldn't change the region.. that does not change the game: You need the actual Japanese region version of the game.. the orignal Japanese version.. not some Patched-to-Japanese version!
Link edit: removed - piracy request
Consider yourself warned!
I can understand the situation that you need a Japanese Zelda but acquire it yourself!
And be happy.. in your case there'll be an exception as Korean Wiis only get working with a Japanese Zelda which I admit is hard to obtain in Korea. In usual cases you would have gotten a permaban!
NO:
2. NO PIRACY talk. Talking about modchips in general.. is fine.. where to get them.. or how to back up your own games... no problem! However, where to obtain your piracy. Is not! Where to obtain your VC or WiiWare games. Search somewhere else.

-IOS11, IOS12, IOS 13, IOS 14, IOS 15, IOS 17, IOS 20, IOS 21, IOS 22, IOS 28, IOS 30, IOS 31, IOS 33, IOS 34, IOS 35, IOS 36, IOS 37, IOS 38, IOS 53, IOS 55, IOS 9 (failed installing in the video)

hi link
thanks for your helps .
i've done these jobs and everything was successful. and now i've a WII with 3.2U firmware and English menu .
but here is a problem . any disk i insert i'll got this error :
An error occured , press eject and turn off the console and ...
what is that for ?
where is the problem ?
help please , i wanna play gamesssssssss
Seems like you have a wrong IOS30/IOS31... please acquire those again (Mario Kart Wii disc ones are good) and write them again to your Wii flash. If it doesn't work, try Starfall: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Starfall (http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Starfall)
Activate:
-Region free GC games with video mode patch
-Region free Wii games
-Skip disc update check
thank you for responding.
- console don't read the Mario Kart .(how can i install files that you said ?)
- the starfall i running but do nothing and hanging in the first page , nothing happens when i press B+2 or press 1 or any buttons . just the home button is working and it's returning me to the homebrew channel ..
can this problem be from my chip ?
anyway i've post a picture of my chip
sorry for bad english type ...

the chip looks good.. you need to press B+1 and try quite a few times.. the detection is very bad.. you need to try pressing B and 1 absolutely simultanious!
thank you .
i'm already running the games using Gecko free loader . but without this loader the problem still exist . . .
